Last year Jason Kenney shed crocodile tears when he expressed sympathy for the discrimination that Roma encounter in Hungary. However, he then went on to say

However a documentary, called Hungary: Towards the Abyss, broadcast on the Aljazeera network and its website, dramatically demonstrates the extent to which Kenney is engaged in denial and racism with regard to the Roma, as well as the Jews, in fascist Hungary where politicians talk about a Final Solution and death squads for the Roma exist.

The documentary, Hungary: Toward the Abyss, describes how:

- a co-founder of the ruling party and close friend of the Prime Minister of Hungary calls for a Final Solution for the Roma because they are "unfit for co-existence. ...These animals shouldn't be allowed to exist among people. In no way. That needs to be solved immediately and regardless of the method" (1/4 of all Roma were exterminated by Nazi Germany)

- "death squads pick off Roma indiscriminately"

- Roma are forced to work in groups on land hundreds of miles from their homes for less thanthe minimum wage

- Neo-Nazis allowed to patrol a Roma village with dogs and whips beating people for two months whilegovernment says that they are occupying the village to control criminality

- Minister of State for Foreign Affairs justifies this by saying: In most societies there areunderclasses, immigrants, living in terrifying parts of the cities that you wouldn't want to enter

- WWII war criminals are being rehabilitated with the most still-wanted Nazi war criminal living freely in Budapest and protected by the police

- another WWII war criminal and author who was a member of the Fascist government that deported 80,000 Jews to concentration camps has his books placed on the school curriculum while other famous, but more liberal authors, are left out of the curriculum

-Neo-Nazi groups openly hold demonstrations to pay tribute to the Nazi SS and give anti-semitic speeches

- calls for all Hungarian Jews to be placed on state index by the far-right government

- being homeless is a crime punishable by fines and imprisonment

- a branch of the Methodist church in a state of jepardy because it was delisted as a government-sacntioned religion for its work with the homeless

- the creation of a party state where the history of the Nazis is rewritten, the constitution ischanged at will whenever the Supreme Court rules against it thanks to the more than 2/3 majority of the ruling party, and there is a lack of artistic and press freedom

The following Aljazeera website contains both the video, Hungary: Toward the Abyss, and a written commentary on the subject by the director, Glen Ellis. Although I knew the situtation for the Roma was very bad, I don't think that I have ever been shaken by a documentary so much in my life. Kenney must be challenged on this again and again and again.

The latest example came on January 5, when Zoltan Bayer, a member of Fidesz and a close friend of Prime Minister Viktor Orban, wrote a column in Magyar Hirlap, a right wing paper with close ties to the government. The article was a response to the stabbings of two Hungarian youths on New Year’s Eve, allegedly by Roma assailants. Bayer wrote:

"A significant part of the Roma are unfit for coexistence. They are not fit to live among people. These Roma are animals, and they behave like animals. When they meet with resistance, they commit murder. They are incapable of human communication. Inarticulate sounds pour out of their bestial skulls. […] These animals shouldn't be allowed to exist. In no way. That needs to be solved - immediately and regardless of the method." ...
