Syria or elsewhere, there are no pure revolutions, just revolutions…
More than two years after the beginning of the revolutionary processes, western medias have not ceased to repeat the same credo: after the dream, the nightmare for the populations of the Middle East and North Africa ; after the « Arab Spring », the Islamist Winter », (both terms that we refuse). Where are gone the « beautiful » and « pure » revolutions from the beginning, as we don’t stop repeating?
The situation is presented as catastrophic: Tunisia and Egypt are governed by Islamists, while the Syrian revolution would have become a civil war between Islamists and the Assad bloody regime. The propagation of such a discourse, underpinned of defeatism, advocates the withdrawal of activists fighting for democracy and social justice.
After being celebrated for their courage and determination in the struggle against their dictators, the people of the region are now described – in an elitist and misleading way – as unable or not ready for radical change. The thesis of “Arab-Muslim” exceptionalism, which supports that these areas are inherently unable to reach a democratic ideal, has returned very fast.
According to various situations, proposals have emerged to limit the revolutionary processes. In Syria, many attempts have been submitted to reach these objectives.
The opportunism of the National Coalition
This is why we should not stay silent in front the failure of the opportunist and bourgeois National Coalition for Syrian Revolutionary and Opposition Forces, ready to betray the Syrian revolution to serve their political interests and of foreign countries.
Many demonstrations and criticisms have also been made inside the popular movement against the National Coallition, including very recently on June 4, 2013 a demonstration condemning their corruption in the Sukkari neighborhood in Aleppo.
Different popular forces have been also very critical of the National Coallition, including the Statement Issued by the Revolutionary Movement in Syria signed by the Syrian Revolution General Commission, Local Coordination Committees in Syria, Syrian Revolution Coordinators’ Union, Supreme Council for the Leadership of the Syrian Revolution (http://www.lccsyria.org/11445). It is notably said that “The revolutionary forces that have signed this statement will no longer bestow legitimacy upon any political body that subverts the revolution or fails to take into account the sacrifices of the Syrian people or adequately represent them. We consider this statement to be a final warning to the SC, for the Syrian people have spoken.”
The National Coalition for Syrian Revolutionary is right to criticize and condemn the criminal role played by Russia, Iran and Hezbollah in the killing of the Syrian people. Hezbollah criminal involvement has shown that no resistance program can be based on a sectarian identity and linked to authoritarian regimes such as Syria and Iran.
This said, the National Coalition should also criticize countries and groups playing a dangerous role in the Syrian Revolution. For example because of the support of Saudi Arabia and Qatar to the coalition, they have not condemned the objectives of these reactionary regimes. These latter want to transform the revolution into a sectarian war, out of fear that an extension of it would threaten their power and their interests. They are financing extremist Islamist groups such as Jabhat al-Nusra, which have a sectarian and reactionary ideology, and often try to reduce the role of the people’s committees, sometimes through violence.
It should be said as well that Jabhat al Nusra has not hesitated to strike deals with the Assad regime, for example this latter is paying more than 150m Syrian lire [£1.4m] monthly to Jabhat al-Nusra to guarantee oil is kept pumping through two major oil pipelines in Banias and Latakia. Jabhat al Nusra fighters have also been involved other buisnesses such as wheat, archaeological relics, factory equipment, oil drilling and imaging machines, cars, spare parts and crude oil.
Is this the model of liberation the syrian revolutionary masses need ?

When the United States deemed the powerful Nusra Front a terrorist organization in December of last year, the Islamist presence among the rebels took many outsiders by surprise. But it was the Syrian regime itself that played a major role in their genesis.
After the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq, Assad’s regime recruited around 3,000 religious Sunnis to organize jihadi militias and take their fight to the embattled country. When they returned, many were imprisoned in the suburban Damascus Sednaya Prison.
It was in these jail cells, where the regime violently put down a summer 2008 rebellion, that five groups combined under the name of the Syrian Liberation Front.
The front included: Fajr al-Islam, led by a doctor who fought in Iraq; Kataeb al-Haq, headed by a blind fighter named Abu al-Farouq; Suqour al-Sham, commanded by a man known as Abu Issa; Ahrar al-Sham, whose leadership is unknown; and Al-Tawhid Battalion, the military arm of the Muslim Brotherhood led by Abdel-Qader Saleh.
Assad ordered the release of the Islamist prisoners some two years ago, shortly after the uprising in Deraa, and the Syrian Liberation Front took to the battlefield, believing peaceful demonstrations would not be enough.

I'll give you another example. On the one hand, some Western countries support some organizations that are at war with Bashar al Assad's regime in Syria, but these same Western countries fight these same organizations in Mali.
They're not even [just] the same organisations - they are the same people. Some have left Syria and come to Mali. The West is fighting them in Mali, but once they cross the border into Syria, they get support from the West.
What is the logic in all of this? Where will it take us? You need to understand, this is not just rhetoric."

"The short answer is Iran and Hezbollah according to Congressional sources. 'The Syrian army's victory at al-Qusayr was more than the administration could accept given Iran's strategic position in the region. Its capture by the Assad forces has essentially added Syria to Iran's list of victories starting with Afghanistan, Lebanon, Iraq, as well as its growing influence in the Gulf.
A Pentagon source reported that the USA, France and Britain are considering a decisive decision to reverse the current Assad momentum and quickly construct one in favor of the rebels with a time period not exceeding the end of the summer.
What happens between now and the end of summer is likely to be catastrophic for the Syrian public and perhaps Lebanon.
'We are going to see a rapid escalation of the conflict,' a staffer on the US Senate Foreign Relations Committee emailed this observer. 'The president has made a decision to give whatever humanitarian aid, as well as political and diplomatic support to the opposition that is neceessary. Additionally, direct support to the (Syrian Military Council), will be provided and that includes military support.'
As part of this 'humanitarian assistance', the US is going to establish in the coming weeks a 'limited humanitarian no-fly zone'...
Libya's no-fly zones made plain that there is no such thing as a 'limited zone'. Put briefly, a 'no-fly zone' means essentially a declaration of all out war.
'It's breath-taking to contemplate how this is going to end and how Iran and Russia will respond,' one source concluded. In response to a question from this observer about how he thought events might unfold in this region over the coming months, a very insightful long-term Congressional Aide replied:
'Well Franklin, maybe someone will pull a rabbit out of the hat to stop the push for war. But frankly I doubt it. From where I sit I'd wager that Syria as we have known it may soon be no more. And perhaps some other countries in the region also."

I am sure that if the Syrian opposition agreed to send all its foreign fighters home the Syrian government would be quite happy to reciprocate. In the meantime there is only one side refusing to talk about peace.
So tell me North Star is now the time to start calling for sanctions against Turkey for its brutal repression of peaceful protestors. I am sure there are lots of Turkish people who would love to be given arms and logistic support to overthrow the repressive regime. Doesn't NATO have a responsibility to protect all citizens in the world?

You're trying to lecture the opposition while Assad has enjoyed support from Russia, Iran, and Hezbollah? It was also the Assad government that decided to fire on peaceful protesters at the beginning of this. Do I think that the opposition should hold out negotiations as a tactic? Yes I do, but I seriously doubt the Assad regime's willingness pull out its foreign fighters in good faith.

Interview with Dr. Sadiq Jalal Al-Azm: The Syrian Revolution and the Role of the Intellectual
This describes the views of a few people I've encountered on this issue:
Whereas the smaller bloc of the left has hardened its old positions, as if nothing happened after the end of the Cold War, and with time its attitudes and methods became of the same nature as that of the Taliban-Jihadis or dogmatic closed-minded sectarians, or even that of terrorist “Bin Ladenites,” in its blind defiance of the West, global capitalism (a global capitalism that Russia and China are now a part of) and imperialism. This bloc from the left, in the Arab world and internationally, is today the most hostile to the Syrian revolution and the closest to defending the tyrannical military-security-familial regime using several arguments, not least of which is that the entire world plotted, apparently, against this regime that is peace-loving and stable.
This type of leftist emphasizes “the game of nations” and “geopolitical analysis,” with stories of collision of interests and plans of the great powers and their dominance in our region, and does not want to view the revolution in Syria through anything other than through this lens, and neglects all that happens inside Syria and to Syria’s revolutionaries today, as well as ignoring all the reasons that led its people to a peaceful revolution, and later to taking up arms in the face of a “nationalist” tyranny that is allied with this kind of leftist. In other words, this leftist has no problem with sacrificing Syria if it leads to a victory being handed to their international camp and “geopolitics” that wants a global victory in the “game of nations.” Their first priority is not Syria or its people in revolt to restore the republic, their freedom, and their dignity, but the game of nations at the global level of analysis and the side that they want to win.
Yes, there is a dimension of class struggle in the Syrian Revolution which does not exclude its religious-sectarian dimension, however, we should not take the issue of class struggle in its classical European-Marxist meaning whereby, on the one hand, the industrial proletariat and the working class in general face, on the other hand, a bourgeois class that owns the means of production and monopolizes surplus value. The closest to our reality is the class struggle as identified and explained by Frantz Fanon in his well-known book The Wretched of The Earth, and it is useful to return to it today for any attempt at diagnosing the Syrian revolution and understanding its nature, especially given that Fanon was a real pioneer in describing the mechanisms and the stages of transformation of political powers, parties, and organizations that start as parties and national liberation movements in oppressed third world societies but change into a clique of rulers completely separated from their beginnings, their popular foundations, and their liberal programs that they had adopted which formed the purpose for their coming to power, only for them to oppress and step on the neck of the wretched of their population; they then, inevitably, move towards glorifying the sole leader who rises from their ranks and raise his personhood above the level of humanity, earth and country leading to his deification.
This is conducted in the name of safeguarding against the monopolization of wealth and power along with what accompanies them from privileges, gains and narrow class and factional interests at the expense of the rest of the population of the country. The class struggle present in Syria is of this nature whereby Syria’s “Wretched of the Earth” are participating in a revolution against a government, a party, and an authoritarian financial-military junta, and against a “nationalist” leadership of divine eternality.
The striking irony in this situation is that the workers, peasants, craftsmen, students and small-earners of Syria (and they are part and parcel of the Free Syrian Army) are the ones who form the base structure for a revolution against a party which, once upon a time, used to present itself as the party of the workers and peasants, as a “national” leadership that used to claim that it is truly part and parcel of the workers and peasants, and that it has come to save them from the feudal, bourgeois and colonial oppression. This cluster of the Syrian wretched of the earth doesn’t only act through a unified class-consciousness, but also by virtue of its religious belongings and sectarian affiliations and doctrinal loyalties, and through its impulse to avenge its squandered dignity and stolen liberties, as well as the harsh reality of extreme subjugation that it lived and is still living, in addition to its constant marginalization and accumulated and continuous disappointments.

But western and salafist arms now pouring in for the destruction of Syrian in this proxy war will make sure that country will follow Iraq, Afghanistan and Lybia as a "failed state" chewed up by marauding militias, slaughter and homelessness.
The U.S. and other Western governments that are backing the FSA have acknowledged the presence of jihadists but insist that they're only a small part of the rebel movement. However, al-Qaeda and other Islamic extremist groups have been at the front of the rebel movement since day one of the Syrian war that began two years ago. According to German intelligence, 95 percent of the rebels aren't even Syrian.
