Been following this series since it started airing here in the States on the SyFy channel. My take is that among the usual commecial television stuff, the show has a pretty heavy anti-colonialist, anti-oppression narrative and can be taken as something of an allegory on a variety of struggles in the present-day world.
Has anyone else here got that vibe from this series? Also, if anybody has links to DEFIANCE fan sites where the discussion seems to include that view of what the show is about, please post them.,

Yes, we've been watching it. We like it. I agree that it has an interesting vibe. I like the alien social stratification and caste systems - a good lens through which to view our own.
Don't know of any fan sites. On another note, there is a MMO game associated with it, and the show has said that it will incorporate results/choices made in that context into future storylines.
ETA; Hubby sez TWOP's reviewer gets at a number of these themes so you might want to check them out. The forums there can be very good, tho the majority of posters are not "left" per se. Hubby also really likes the choice of Graham Greene as a "magnate" and the way that the show plays with our expectations of how Native "Americans" would think and act in this kind of situation.

I have watched the first 3-4 episodes. It has hackneyed dialogue, overwrought plots and seems to deliberately try to merge Firefly, Battlestar Galactica, Deadwood, Lord of the Rings and all five Star Treks. So obviously we love it. So far I can see the anti-colonialist narrative but it all seems to ultimately confim a liberal-humanist universalism: i.e. tolerate other cultures until they come around to our (human/white) way of thinking. That and the representation of that villain/elfish guy's race seems to suggest an essentialism at odds with the other races (e.g. sexually insatiable, prone to crime, and so on). So there is some variance, unconscious and otherwise, in how race relations are presented. At least, those are my preliminary thoughts.
