Mary-Louise Parker Quitting Acting Because People Are Mean Online

"The world has gotten too mean for me, it's just too bitchy," she said in an interview with News Corp Australia. "All the websites and all the blogging and all the people giving their opinion and their hatred … it's all so mean-spirited, it's all so critical."

But really? You care enough about jealous assholes to quit a profession you love, after making it so far in the industry? "It's sport for people; it's fun to get on at night and unleash their own self-loathing by attacking someone else who they think has a happier life," she said. Exactly! If you put anything interesting or meaningful out into the world, people are going to criticize it — and you — because many human beings are bitter and small, and social media enables them to join up and be collectively horrible together, like a tsunami of dicks. It's rough. But it's only so rough as you allow it to be.

That's tough.

The author continues on to write "who knows what she has been dealing with" too and is seemingly empathetic. Can't imagine what level of harassment would have to take place in order to push her away from her career.

One part of my mind thinks "just disengage from social media" but that's not really fair.

Sounds like "social media" is just a catch-all for the ceaseless crap all celebreties -- particularly female celebreties -- catch on a daily basis. Not the kind of thing you can just disengage from.

True.

She seems to reference things like bloggers, and people on twitter. So, in theory you can stop seeing that, just like one can stop reading gossip mags. What's unfair is you have to do it in the first place.

I like how the author states (to paraphrase) "even I have to deal with being called a bitch/whore everyday and I'm no one. I can't imagine the level of vitrol she receives."

Also (is this petty?): I had to ask wikipedia "who is Mary-Louise Parker?"

The [url=http://www.news.com.au/entertainment/television/weeds-star-mary-louise-p... piece[/url] makes it sound less immediate than the Jezebel piece implied.

Quote:
"I'm not really that into it anymore," said the 48-year-old while promoting R.I.P.D. "I don't know how many more movies I wanna do. I wouldn't mind doing a TV show again, I'd like to do a couple more plays, but I'm almost done acting, I think."

Which of course takes nothing away from her points about how nasty people can be, but it doesn't sound like she's quitting any time soon. Maybe her next TV show will have an 8-year run as well.

Parker has been acting since her youth and has won Golden Globe, Emmy and Tony awards. While prevailing wisdom has it that Hollywood spurns women over 40, Parker admits her career actually got better in her late-30s and into her 40s. She spent eight seasons playing a pot-dealing single mother in Weeds between 2005 and 2012.

Riight. I never really got in to that show. She looks familiar though.

No match for Carrot Top though when it comes to name recognition.

I was assuming that wikipedia had already answered your query, CF, but I posted that because I'm sure she's not a household name to a lot of people, and also because I thought it was interesting to note that her career took off in her late-30s - obviously the exception more than the rule.

I've yet to get into Weeds myself, although I did pick up a used DVD set of season one a few years ago. It's sitting in my 'to-eventually-get-into' pile along with season one of Breaking Bad and My So-Called Life.

I got really into weeds until season 4 when it took a gross turn (visual wise for me). Also, she was in 'Saved' which is a great movie.

I thought it was interesting to note that her career took off in her late-30s - obviously the exception more than the rule.

Yes! I didn't want to say this before, but not only is she not really a household name like you said ODA, but I didn't really think she would be that plugged into the social media world either.

Of all the people to be fuming, it seems strange that MLP is the one to stand up -- or maybe not. I don't really pay that much attention to celeb news.
