They are a disgrace, they are anti-Canada and they've ruined our reputation around the world.

Sorry folks...The Liberals were NEVER this bad...Quit insinuating we could be worse off because we couldn't.

I tend to judge from my own personal experiences.  During the the Liberal tenure of Chretien, I recall having huge waits in hospitals.  During the tenure of Harper, I've noticed that I get less telemarketing calls, and wait times seem a little better (though not much).  Those are the only differences I've noticed in my own personal experiences.

alan smithee alan smithee's picture

YAY!....Wait times at hospitals and telemarketing calls.

Hmm...How about the robocalls?...How about prison population going up while crime rates going down?...How about a government that openly states that it doesn't care about statistics and facts a nd governs solely by ideology?

How about a government that rejects science?..How about the mainstreaming of Republican style attack ads?..How about a government that spends tax money on propaganda via TV commercials and junk mail?

How about a government trying desperately to end the right for a woman to choose abortion?....How about a government that wants to take over as Israel's BFF?

How about a government that has been in contempt?..a government that changes government colours to party colours?

Etc...etc...?!

As I said, the Liberals were NEVER this bad...and if you think differently, you're deluded.

For me it's cuts to provincial programs that I find most difficult, and the Liberals cut transfer payments to the provinces (which the Conservatives have vowed not to do) while simultaneously downloading various responsibilities, which made life tougher for people.  Wait times got worse, and they made cuts to EI, social housing, and "scrapped the Canada Assistance Plan, which required the provinces to meet national standards for welfare", etc.

As far as "How about a government trying desperately to end the right for a woman to choose abortion?", I haven't noticed this.  Rather, Harper has committed to not change the current status, and so far has not.  Further, it seems that Conservative MPs who do wish to bring up items in question period that potentially could be seen as anti-choice have been not allowed to do so by the PMO, so it seems that this was an honest commitment on Harper's part.

Anyway, as I said in the first paragraph, and in my previous post, it was the Liberals during their three majority terms who cut things that affected a great number of people, myself included.  I haven't seen these things change much with the Conservatives in their one majority term.  So, anyone who votes either Liberal or Conservative expecting something better is deluded.

alan smithee alan smithee's picture

Well...Vote as you wish,it's your right.

As for me,I'll pay attention to what direction the political winds will be blowing in the next election and vote for the party most likely to take down the CPC.

I don't care if it's Liberal,NDP or Bloc Québécois.

We couldn't do worse.

To me the priority is taking down this government...The socialist dream is no longer a personal priority..and as I said, the Mulcair NDP isn't socialist anyway.

I'm picking my battles and resigned to the fact that I'm never going to get everything I want out of government.

My #1 issue is marijuana now...A civil rights issue whose time has come.

Face it,all the parties are bought and paid for...Corporate interests will always trump social interests..It's all about the mighty dollar.

So I'll take my bag of weed, have a seat on my bean bag chair, chill out and no longer worry about what I cannot change.

I'm done dreaming.

Not me, I feel we can do better than the two big business parties.  If the NDP looks like it's coming close to winning the next election, we'll see big business truly shitting itself to stop it.  Because last time came as an unexpected surprise, we only caught a glimpse of the reaction of big business (the massage story), but if it happens again, we'd see all out war from big business to get either of their puppet parties in (that being the Libs or Cons).

That's the problem..Our system is so controlled by business, you can be sure that an NDP win will bring the old 'economic uncertainty'song and dance and force the NDP to shift to the centre-right on economic issues.

I'm not convinced that Thomas Mulcair would have the fortitude to stand up to big business,he's not Jack Layton.

I just don't see a light at the end of the tunnel.

This is why I'm prepared to hold my nose and take whatever small victory I can get.

As you said, there'll be an all out war from big business..Money will be spent and the sheep will be led to the slaughter.

This is why I do not  see the NDP forming the next government..Not with corporate media and money calling the shots.

So what do we do?

I agree with most things people at babble have said and say about the Liberals but I don't agree that they are worse than the CPC.

Three majority governments with their red book thrown into the blue box makes me not willing to hold my nose.  And, like I said, it was the Liberal's cuts to transfer payments and downloading that really hurt people, which even the Cons have pledged they will not do.  So, I feel giving up hope and voting either Liberal or Conservative is a mistake.

An old stratagem: The bad cop (CPC) threatens and tortures the prisoner (the electorate). The good cop (LPC) says enough, enough, we have to be nice to him. He talks reasonably with and cajoles the prisoner, but he only seems so nice because of the contrast with the bad cop. In the end, the two choices aren't much different.

Public Safety Minister Vic Toews has announced that he is retiring from politics and will resign as a cabinet minister and as member of Parliament for Provencher effective Tuesday, ahead of what is expected to be a major cabinet shuffle this summer.

Vic Toews was a disgusting moral values hypocrite.  He voted against the gay marriage bill on the grounds that it threatened the sanctity of marriage, and then turned around and cheated on his wife by fathering a child with the 18-year old babysitter.

It also says something about Harper's own ethical code that he allowed Toews to become Minister of Public Morals.

alan smithee alan smithee's picture

Legislating 'morals' is undemocratic,,fascist at worst.

And it's always funny when a government obsessed with morals turns out to be completely amoral.

I wonder what kind of reptilian amoral hypocrite will replace him.

Lens Solution

There are reports that Julian Fantino will take over from Toews, and that's certainly what Sun News seems to be promoting in their articles today.

I wonder if Toews will get the Manitoba judgeship from Harper that he has been hoping for.  Or will Toews's treatment of his ex-wife in Manitoba hurt his prospects?

socialdemocrati...

[tangent]

I disagree that legistlating morals is fascistic. The entire democratic system is based on morals: that all people are created equal, that freedom is a virtue to be elevated above mere power or security. And I want a government to legislate based on the good of everyone, to give freedom and equality to people who have been so often left behind.

It's not about a moral government versus some sort of amoral technocratic utopia. It's about what moral compass should guide us. What kind of country do you want to live in?

Maurice Vellacott won’t run again

 JULY 25, 2013

Longtime Saskatoon MP Maurice Vellacott won’t run in the next federal election, saying he wants to spend more time with his family and possibly return to his pastoral work.

The Saskatoon-Wanuskewin MP announced his decision in a news release Thursday afternoon. By the time he leaves Ottawa in 2015, Vellacott will have spent 19 years as an MP.

Harper perd son conseiller principal pour le Québec

Publié le 01 août 2013

(OTTAWA) Stephen Harper perd son conseiller pour le Québec. André Bachand quitte le bureau du premier ministre après deux ans de service.

mark_alfred

I guess Harper felt Bachand was not particularly helpful to him given the Conservative's plummeting popularity in Quebec.

mark_alfred

Here's the Conservatives' Policy Declaration as of 2011.  Apparently they're going to hold another convention sometime in 2013 and update this.  Have they already done this?  Anyway, in glancing through the document, I found it interesting.  Unless I missed it, it certainly didn't mention raising retirement from 65 to 67.

The Senate scandals seem to be getting to Sen. Marjory Lebreton.

You can feel how angry and bitter she is about how much damage it has caused to the Conservatives.

She made some questionable remarks about Sen. Brazeau's aboriginal background today in an interview with Laura Stone of Global:

“Patrick Brazeau to me he’s a tragedy,” she says.

“Here’s a person that got appointed to the Senate, could have done great work for his people. It’s just a human tragedy and an experiment gone wrong.”

I think the contest between the 2 men was that whoever lost would cut their hair, if I remember it correctly at the time.  They both agreed that they both had big hair and so Trudeau was going to cut his hair if he lost and vice versa.

As for Lebreton, I suspect this has been a horrific year for the Senate with all the scandals and she is reacting to the stress of it all by lashing out at various people.  She sounds very angry in the interview with the media and with the idea that Duffy may 'talk'.

CBC reports that the Conservatives are going to BC to push for pipelines.  Apparently they're being more conciliatory in an attempt to get agreements.  link

Yeah. I noticed that. But will it have any effect? Looks like Harper himself has already got the ball rolling as he is already in BC.

As an aside, Harper was in West Kelowna yesterday at Quails' Gate Winery hosting a BBQ for 600 in ~34C temps. Have been there and the setting is awesome with vineyards terracing down the slope and Lake Okanagan and the arid mountain vista in the background. Wish Tom would have undertaken the similar BBQ circuit route during the summer:

Yeah, I think we're going to see a lot more of "Sweater Steve" in the next while, as he strives to get pipelines and better poll numbers.  Heck, he's going to be releasing a book soon too on hockey ("the Great Game", I think).  Good ol' Sweater Steve.

Dont expect conciliatory. link

This is just them setting up as they methodically do, another step on the way. The final act will be pure wedge politics. And you'll hear a lot of those lines now even.

mark_alfred

Thanks Ken.  Yes, of course, any current conciliatory tone now is all for show.  They're sharpening their knives in background.

socialdemocrati...

They never stopped pushing for a pipeline in BC. They just see an opportunity to double down, now that BC re-elected its right-wing government.

KenS

I hope this doesnt sound nitpicky. But there isnt going to even be a show of conciliatory. And even Christy Clark and her right wing government is looking for and needs an olive branch on the pipelines. For crisakes, even Premier Redford has asked for a more conciliatory tone.

There wont be any harsh words, and there may be a hint of conciliatory language here and there. But this is show the flag, and play to the choir [which is in BC too].

Going throiugh the motions does not necessarily mean conciliatory tones. This is what they are going to refer to as consulatation come the inevitable decisions.

Its just early necessary prep for the full blown wedge politics at the end.

mark_alfred

Interesting article about Conservative fundraising.  Basically they're advocating smaller government and a strict adherence to the constitutional jurisdictions of both the feds and provinces.  So, since the feds cut taxes, that means the provinces have room to increase taxes if they need more cash for healthcare, apparently.

Dave Ellis, CTV Journalist, Allowed To Travel With Harper After Question Controversy

10/02/2013

OTTAWA - A veteran TV cameraman will be allowed to travel to Malaysia with the prime minister this week after all.

Earlier today, Stephen Harper's office appeared poised to scratch CTV journalist Dave Ellis from the trip because he asked an impromptu question during a media event last week in New York.

The TV networks fought back, insisting that they — not the Prime Minister's Office — should decide who to assign to cover Harper when he travels abroad.

Shortly after news of the dispute became public, however, Jason MacDonald, a spokesman for the prime minister, said no accredited journalist would be prevented from boarding Harper's plane.

During an event last week in New York, Ellis asked Harper about the charges laid against then-Conservative MP Dean Del Mastro, even though reporters and photographers had been told questions were not allowed.

Harper leaves Thursday for a seven-day trip to Malaysia and Indonesia, and CTV had Ellis accredited to work on the assignment as a pool cameraman.

But following Ellis's New York assignment, CTV said it was told by the PMO that Ellis would not be allowed on Harper's plane, even though he had earlier been approved for the trip.

Long overdue.

The Liberals when they were in power had ample opportunity to address this issue and ignored it.

Now the Conservatives say they will address this ripoff of Canadians.

LMFAO. They must be refering to the fact the Tories said the cameras could come in, but the journalists had to stay out, so in protest the media, except sun news, kept thier cameras out. It takes alot to piss off the suckups in the media, so Harper screwed himself, and then he goes and makes it worse and in such a dishonest fashion.
