Back to school

Any babblers going back to school today or have kids who are? I just dropped off our youngest, who is starting grade seven. She' s got the teacher she was hoping for, and a bunch of her friends are in her class, so it takes the sting out of her 12th birthday being on the first day of school.

Anyone have any particular back-to-school memories they'd like to share?

Our youngest is starting middle school today and our oldest starts grade 11 tomorrow. Today marks my 32nd orientation on a university campus. Our kick-off event is standing room only. The drizzle may have driven them to campus today.

Oh, the University orientations. I did close to a dozen working at U of T and Western, had my own too many years ago to count and volunteered for others while still a student. 14 or 15 in all - a paltry sum compared to 31. Thankfully we live far enough away from campus that our lawn isn't littered with broken beer bottles and our trees aren't festooned with toilet paper. Not so when I lived in the Annex in TO. If it wasn't drunken frat parties it was endless film crews ... the film crews were far more annoying.

I was a student at Western from 87-92. I'm not sure if our tenures over-lapped, Rebecca.

Nah, I was management scum at Western from '03 to '09 and did a couple of years post-grad stuff there while I was working. My undergrad was '87 to '91 at UofT. Liberal arts degree that makes for erudite dinner conversation but not much else. Who can resist someone who can quote Chaucer in Middle English? I worked at UofT for several years after graduating, always meaning to get my PhD in Polysci. Lifelong learner, failed academic.

Mine start tomorrow.  New schools in a new city.  Wee bit stressed, but by next week it will have all settled out.

Last year at UBC for my youngest and grades 9,7,5 and 3 for the Grandkids.  Three of the Grandkids are starting a new school.

No, not yet! But the undergrads! They are everywhere! They just keep coming! Wherefore, Lord? And Whence?

One can only wait until the inevitable culling of first year undergrads during the brief period between the publishing of midterm results and the cut-off point for dropping classes without penalty.
