Who will replace Olivia Chow in Trinity-Spadina?

Lord Palmerston

Since Olivia Chow will almost certainly be stepping aside to run for Mayor, there's going to be one more run on the Trinity-Spadina boundaries federally.  Some possible candidates come to mind, including Brian Topp, Mike Layton, Adam Vaughan, Jennifer Hollett, and maybe even Adam Giambrone.  Or one could get a "Craig Scott" calibre candidate who is a lawyer and/or professor, or some "media intellectual" like Naomi Klein.  Should be interesting.  Unfortunately I can't see someone like Winnie Ng or Tam Goossen running - too many bridges burned with the T-S NDP.

It would be funny if Tam Goossen ran for the NDP and Helen Kennedy for the Liberals!

Brachina

 Why would that be funny?

Jennifer Hollett.

Hopefully not Joe Cressy who seems to be angling for it.

If there is a by-election in Spadina (unless Harper decides to call a snap election), I do think that Tom Mulcair will want Jennifer Hollett to run.  Why is she campaigning now with Linda McQuaig.  It may be from the goodness from her heart that she is doing it.  However, I do think that she is doing it so she can gain exposure and experience in paricipating in a campaign.

In the next general election, I think she may want to run in Toronto-Centre if Linda McQuaig loses or in the new riding of Spadina-Fort York if Linda wins.

The redistribution report posted by Skinny dipper is only a provisional report.

I have heard that the final report is due by the end of Septmeber. perhaps someone can confirm.

What have you got against him? he's a good guy ...though he may be too preoccupied with Olivia Chow's mayoral campaign to pursue a seat for himself.

Skinny Dipper

It's good that Jennifer Hollett his helping Linda McQuaig with her campaign.  However, I don't think she is just helping Linda just out of the goodness of her heart.  Jennifer is likely trying to raise her own profile so that she will get ground support in a future nomination race and election in a Toronto riding.

When is Olivia expected to enter the race against Rob Ford?  How much time does it usually take to prepare a run for Mayor of Toronto?  Until she declares officially, talk of her leaving is somewhat speculative.

She certainly has the ability to beat Ford, and has been ahead of him in the polls for the past year.  But we don't have official word yet.

No one can legally file as a candidate for mayor until January 1 2014 - so until then Olivia Chow can only be an unofficial candidate and cannot raise any money etc...

My early preference would be for Mike Layton.

I'd like to see Dave Meslin get a kick at the can.

So Olivia may wait until the new year to decide then.

And it will probably be a long time before the by-election since Harper hasn't even called the current by-elections yet!

Sounds like the Conservative nomination battle in Brandon-Souris has gotten divisive and may be causing the delay.

 Or Sarah Layton.

I imagine Sarah Campbell Layton is approached every day. What is her current gig? Is she still with the Stephen Lewis Foundation?

Stockholm

Realistically, Trinity-Spadina probably won't be vacant until February and any byelection won't happen until summer '14

Lens Solution

That's what I was thinking above.  By-elections seem like very drawn out affairs, particularly at the federal level.  Harper often waits months to call them, as is the case for the current by-elections which still haven't been called.

Krago

Adam Giambrone won't try to replace Olivia.  He'll be too busy campaigning against her.

Lens Solution

Giambrone is planning to run for Mayor again?

He doesn't have a chance against Olivia.

Then again, there's already a Chrystia Freeland campaign office open on King St--a few doors away from the Albany Club, interestingly enough...

I saw that article...I don't think there is any way that Giambrone would be anything other than a Chow supporter in the actual mayoral campaign. It sounds like the event was a bit of a social where people did some tire kicking and where a lot of people were probably invited with no expectation that they would necessarily back him. Giambrone would know Soknacki quite well since they were both on Miller's executive etc... and Soknacki's ward overlapped with the Scarborough-Guildwood ward where Giambrone just ran - so I think he probably went to see what was going on and get some intelligence on what Soknacki was up to...etc...For all we know, he was actually asked by Chow's people to go and see what Soknacki was up to...bearing in mind that its not exactly bad for Olivia Chow to have a small "c" conservative with PC ties also running against Ford and perhaps drawing votes away from him.
