The Tyee wants to go National!

Finally.

Yes! Yes! Yes!

Help The Tyee Go National

At this critical moment in Canadian democracy, you can bring more fact-driven independent reporting to the national conversation.

They want an office in Ottawa. So now we have to decide whether to send money to rabble.ca to support Karl Nerenberg, or to the Tyee to hire someone else to do the same kind of reporting?

It would be nice if they sat down (maybe with others as well) and had a chat about how to work together. Or is that just crazy talk?

NorthReport

Karl's being doing a fabulous job.

That sounds like a plan to moi Unionist!

Excellent suggestion.

Unionist

Oh, and I just noticed [url=http://rabble.ca/babble/media/press-progress-new-online-social-media]Pre.... They want donations too.

The very least all of these resources should do is offer to meet and cooperate with the others - or else state why, publicly, they need to exist apart from the others.

Do they each have some ideology or aim all to themselves which prevents unity with others? Then state it.

I'm hereby calling on rabble.ca (the only one I support financially, and read regularly, so far anyway) to organize a meeting inviting all progressive online media to discuss cooperation.

Of course the big problem will be the egos involved.

Broadbent's backing of Brian Topp and the way he did it, has left me cold.

Ed's day is done and he needs to go gracefully into the nite (retirement), as far as I am concerned.

NorthReport

It would be great to see authors from First Nations involved as well as Quebecois, and maybe some Filipinos too, and other groups, as they constitute the fasting growing immigrant population in Canada today.

I really like the Tyee, but Karl on Parl is great - he is an excellent writer; I hope people have read his most recent piece about Senators' (non) residency.

And my priority would of course remain contributing to a left publication from Québec - in French.

Does the Tyee pay its writers?

NorthReport

How about a bilingual publication - isn't that long overdue!

By that I mean articles in both French and English, but not the same articles.

lagatta

I doubt very much that such a thing would fly (this, from decades of experience).

NorthReport

We need to give bilingual folks an opportunity to express themselves as they actually do have a lot to offer.

There are lots and lots of bilingual Canadians in BC, and in Quebec of course.

Agreed!

Which one(s) do you like?

Yes but in BC they mostly speak one of the Chinese languages and English.

We do have a vibrant French immersion system but as I saw with my son when he graduated there are few places for him to speak French or to read it for that matter.  I believe about 7% of our populaton is English/French bilingual.

Not crazy talk exactly, But I wouldn't assume that two publications, even two on the progressive end of the spectrum, have exactly the same goals or points of view.

No more than you and I have the same perspective on everything.

I don't see how any of them need to explain how they need to be independent from the others at all.

I speak and write more than two languages and have no problem expressing myself - that isn't the problem. The definition of "national" is a major one for much of the left.

Unionist, of course there are several left publications here, online and in print, but nothing similar to The Tyee.

6079_Smith_W

Speaking of national, the comments on the article are worth reading.

Hmmm, Vancouver-centric or Toronto-centric. Okay, I would pick door number 1.

Oh let them have their exclusive little parties. At least some of us know where the real centre of the universe is.

Unionist

Actually, come to think of it, sectarianism is the sole enduring characteristic of the "left". Let them all do their own little tiny thing and attack all the others for being dogmatically impure. How sweet. Let us march down the road to mutual assured destruction.

quizzical

i think sectarianism is trying to mound everybody under place or 1 news banner. several voices....or pluralism as many call it is non-sectarian!!!!!!!!

non-sectarians believe in free association and tolerance of different beliefs even political and religious pluralism......just sayin

oh........and i know where the centre of the universe is and it's got a great newspaper!!!!

bagkitty bagkitty's picture

How many times do we have to go over this, the real center of the universe is that place with the maximum number of felines. It moves, randomly at times.

Unionist

Oh, ok, forget I mentioned the strange notion of working together. Shoulda known it would never work.

NorthReport

None of these publications are perfect, and many of them will become corrupted once they start collecting advertising revenue, funny dat. The Tyee had an issue within the past year, oh yea, it was about outing someone who could have been compromised, because he was from the wrong side of the fence, and Beers had no shame about what the Tyee did. So one wants to be careful who they are getting into bed with.

Catchfire Catchfire's picture

Well why don't you Karly lovers donate to keep him at rabble? (Also, good luck or whatever Tyee)

Here is a nice video with Karl being smart and demure (fun fact: he stole that shirt from me, hence his audacious handsomeness)
