I've been noticing that, lately, they seem to be closing a lot more stories to commenting...does anyone know what formula they use to determine when they're going to do that?
Also...some people who post on those comment sections have a black star and the word "Trusted" by their names. How does someone get declared "trusted" by the minions of the Great Zygote Microphone?

It has changed. I think that the problem was that the site was oveloaded, often with spammers and trolls, and the moderating seemed to be outsourced to a private firm. That must have been costing them big bucks, for a few more website "hits". You now can not get in to comments with "addblock" or "ghostery" enabled. Also, the comments were in full view of anybody, and it certainly appeared that they would not cover certain stories in asia or the middle east because of the comments generated. Now they have even fewer "news" stories, and most of them can not be commented on. Unfortunately, their website continues the CBC trend of less news, more "stories". It is always enlightening to check the BBC or the Guardian, etc., to see which world news stories the CBC is ignoring in favour of the infotainment pablum that is now served up . They have even dumbed down the national radio news, such a shame, and a disservice to Canadians.

I noticed that too. The power and politics question of teh day is now at poll daddy. I guess evan is tired of taking flak for being a hack. CBC is just awful now. Their business section is now national post or financial post copy and paste...oh when did John Manley(hate this asshole with as much fury as harper) become head of the chief executive council. Rex is guffaing it up with "liberal" manley. Now he has shown his true colours as just another ceo business asshole. Where is Carlin when you need him.

Well there's more to this story than people may realize. The CBC Forums are a complex maze of outsourcing that leaves the moderation of their Forums in foreign hands. Messages go missing on a regular basis, and in a pattern that nobody can make sense of.
In fact the same company that does this moderation (ICUC Moderation) also moderates the Government of Canada comment areas.

if you are shocked at stories being closed to comment , obviously you have not been around the Globe site lately, esp. when Wente is nearby or Ford stories are looming ...

I find by the time I am informed of an article, go to it, the comments are already closed, on particularly 'hot' topics. But also, I assume they have a number of comments and a time protocol they follow. In the news, with stories more than 3 days old, they are old news and new stories pop up. They don't want to take the time to moderate 'old news' comment posts i imagine. Plus if it reachs X number of comments, it probably automatically gets a close, as too many pages take too much space and time.
rabble used to close topics when they reached 100 comments, not sure if that still happens, and then add a link saying 'continues here' or something. I gathered they felt it was unweildy at a certain # of pages or posts.

Rabble didn't have topic paging before, so that's what the closing of threads was about.

I recall it had something to do with page loading time because there were a few babblers on dial up and what not.
