Has anyone here been watching this? Three episodes so far (of a scheduled eight-episode miniseries).
It's pretty awesome. Dank, dark, philosophical and with a continual feeling of dread. Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey are excellent as police partners...but this is no buddy-cop show.
I've been loving it. It reminds me a [i]lot[/i] of one of my other favourite shows of all time, the criminally underrated Canadian series [i]Durham County[/i]. The hallucinating main character, the kids playing crime scene with dolls, the washed-out colour palette, the stark cinematography, the exploration of machismo and violence...they're definitely going to the [i]Durham[/i] well. So far it isn't nearly as dark, however.
The main cast is better and the dialogue more ornate, though I wish the female characters had more depth. I also have a soft spot for the setting, having once lived in the Pelican State myself.
Apparently it's an anthology format, so Cohle and Hart won't return next year. I hope this breaks the glass, uh, floor of prominent movie actors doing TV, though.
Your point about the female characters is well-taken; now that I think on it, it stands out a bit, given the high quality and subtlety of the writing and characterization.
And yes, it's visually quite amazing.

I'm really enjoying it but good point about the lack of well developed female characters. The dialogue of the opening scene of the third episode (as they entered/observed the followers in that Revival Tent was brilliant. The actor playing the preacher was so familiar and I missed the credits. Anyone catch the actor's name?

I realized during the Super Bowl of American Football that I need to start watching this series. Glad to see that hunch backed up by some esteemed babblers.

My bet is still on the governor (Edwin Edwards, fictionalized to Edwin Tuttle) and his creepy preacher brother from the 2nd episode having something to do with it. If they follow the timeline of the real Edwards, he was in prison 2001-2011, and got out just in time for the killings to resume.
Tonight's episode was just spectacular. That long tracking shot at the end would put Alfonso Cuaron to shame. I wonder what their budget is. They don't seem to be saving in any of the usual ways -- minimal soundstage scenes and recurring sets, lots of location shots and helicopter work. (Not to mention what they must be paying Matt and Woody.)
