2018 Premier Horwath. You heard it here first.

Not if Christine Elliot has anything to say about it.

3 women duking it out in 2018!

Wrong. I heard "2014 Premier Horwath" here first.

Get back to me a little closer to 2018.

Sad to see Liberal majority (looks that way). It is nice to see Hudak (can't stand him) and his austerity agenda rejected.

Now, either the Liberals will re-introduce their "most progressive budget in decades" and continue to lean left under Wynne, or they will do what Liberals usually do and turn right after fooling voters. Either way NDP supporters win, since we will either get a relatively progressive government or get to say "we told you so!"

terrytowel

the NDP increased their vote share and seat count.

ghoris

The NDP is not doing well in Toronto. Liberals pick up Trinity-Spadina (and it wasn't particularly close), Davenport (not declared but it's all over but the crying) and are less than 100 votes back of DiNovo in Parkdale-High Park.

I thought the goal was to win government?

Best news of the evening so far:

The PCs are doing worse than anyone predicted - including (I think) anyone on babble.

That means the people of Ontario are winning this round.

Congratulations to all concerned - and solidarity to my fellow trade unionists who fought hard and well to STOP HUDAK!

Minority Liberals forced to govern somewhat progressively to get NDP support, win majority in subsequent election, then shift to the right, followed by NDP win after voters flt betrayed by Liberals. I feel like I've seen this movie before.

NorthReport

It appears like Andrea Horwath has increased both the number of seats and the popular vote for the NDP compared to the last election.

Having said that congratulations to the people who post here who won the election.

And kudos to babble poster Jan Johnstone, and her daughter for having the courage to put their names forward, securing the nominations, and running in this election.

Good on the both of you Jan.

Cheers,

DiNovo has opened up a 600-vote lead in Parkdale, but now Michael Prue is in trouble in Beaches-East York, trailing by 40 votes with 110/189 polls in. Peter Tabuns could be the only NDP MPP from Toronto. Shades of the federal results in the 1990s.

ghoris

Looks like the only seats left to be declared are Parkdale-High Park (Di Novo still leading by about 600 votes), Beaches-East York (Prue still trailing by about 60 votes), Kitchener-Conestoga (where the aptly named Michael "No, Not That" Harris has a 700-vote lead), Thornhill (Libs currently up by 40 votes) and Durham (the Grit candidate has a 1,200-vote lead - not sure why this hasn't been called).

takeitslowly

Thanks Canada, you lib us again. Its time to give up on politics forever now.  Tired of being lib and con .  Canada is a 2 party dictatorship.

terrytowel

Tim Hudak has just resigned as leader of the PC Party.  But he will stay on as MPP

Pierre C yr

Its not a catastrophy but its a mess. We lost the ability to influence a liberal gov for 4 years. Dont be surprised to see the bduget waterred down and future budgets move towards austerity. Not negotiating some amendments to gain support for the budget was a mistake. I can see the NDP vote % drop with every refresh.

How was this worth it for the NDP?

Arthur Cramer Arthur Cramer's picture

Well Mulcair, were you paying attention tonight? Trudeau is out-flanking you on the left. Pay attention, or it'll be 1993 all over again. Figure it out now and get with the program, for Christ sake!

terrytowel

Do you think Kathleen will drop her lawsuit against the PC Party?

terrytowel

Andrea is set to address her supporters now!

robbie_dee

Michael Prue is a very capable and principled politician and I will be terribly disappointed if he doesn't pull through.

terrytowel

Andrea just walked in, and she is solo. No family with her. And she is NOT wearing orange.

You know, just once, I'd like to see one of these post-loss leader speeches depart entirely from the universal script and show some old-fashioned mean-spiritedness.

"Voters: Fuck you and the horse you rode to the polling places. Ontario, you deserve whatever you get from here on out. Oh, and Cynthia, I want a divorce. And Bobby and Caitlin, you were accidents."

At this point they are at the same number 21.  They have won more seats than during the last general election.

I wonder what the turnout was.  Ontarians seem to be engaging in their own quiet, Ignore the Vote, campaign. I think it says alot that none of the parties can appeal to half of the potential voters.  Instead of chasing Red Tories the NDP might want to connect with the poor underclass and see whether they can give the party a crash course in reality in the 21 century.

The latte sipping Torontonians apparently vote and not for the NDP. The people struggling with numerous jobs and incomes that don't pay all the bills can't be bothered because no party speaks for them.

terrytowel

Peter Tabus has been reelected as MPP

Fully agree. I'm not familiar with Ontario elections law. Is it possible to trade him for DiNovo?

PrairieDemocrat15

Libs tots gonna bring in PR after getting majority with .45% of vote.

takeitslowly

Wwho cares its a majority government, Jesus Christ could be elected on the NDP team and it wouldnt matter.

terrytowel

Andrea no longer holds the balance of power,

kropotkin1951

Five minutes later they are at 22 and thus have won one more seat. The results will likely lead to recounts in a few ridings.

cco

I think Ontarians themselves are responsible for sinking PR for a generation.

terrytowel

The NDP Karl Belanger is on CBC saying they are the winners tonight, and the PC are the losers.

takeitslowly

woo hoo a liberal dictatorship!  we need more of those!

josh

Prueis now up by about  200.

ghoris

Thornhill is crazy close - Liberals now up by 60 votes with just 3 polls left to report. Recount seems likely.

Prue now back in the lead by 73 votes but just 153/189 polls are in.

DiNovo's lead has shrunk to less than 250 votes with 188/203 polls in.

Tabuns could still be the only NDPer left standing in Toronto. The result in Trinity-Spadina does not bode well for the federal by-election.

terrytowel

I feel really sorry for Paul Ferreira. Before he lost by only a couple of hundred votes. This time he lost by 3,000!

ghoris

Interesting that Jagmeet Singh seems to have increased his vote in Bramalea despite the overall stampede to the Liberals in the GTA.

takeitslowly

I hope Prue loses. We need more liberals in the GTA. Why do we even need to count  votes in the GTA anyways? Just give it to the liberal party.  They will always protect us.

theleftyinvestor

Windsor West is another of the few to swing to NDP.

ghoris wrote:

The NDP -> Liberal stampede was strictly a 416 phenomenon, not GTA. It may have also helped that in some ridings where PC was not in play, those voters rushed to Liberals, edging out the NDP.

Todrick of Chat...

Well fuck, Karen Gventer really dropped the ball in Bruce/Grey/Owen Sound.

When will the NDP find a better candidate, Karen hasn’t performed at all in the last decade.

josh

DiNovo now up by 507.

Liberals win Thornhill by 85 votes.

We need an all female party leaders!

PrairieDemocrat15

Some big almost-wins by the NDP.

Judy Brant almost stole London-North Centre from Deb Mathews (32% to 35%).

Brian White almost won Sarnia-Lambton (36% to 41%).

Gurpreet Dhillion made some big games in Bramton West, next door to Jagmeet Singh (32% to 40%).

Mary Rita Holland had a good showing in Kingston and the Islands (31% 41%).

I may be misunderstanding your post, but are you suggesting that outside the 416 PC voters went Liberal, costing the NDP seats? If so, where in the 905 was the NDP even remotely competitive other than Bramalea, Brampton-Springdale and Oshawa?

Sure you do Terrytowel. That is one nasty post. Shame on you!

ghoris

Prue now up by less than 50 votes with 23 polls yet to report.

DiNovo now up by 400 with just 5 polls left to report.

josh

Beaches and Parkdale only ones left to call.

If you read any of my posts about Paul Ferreira I was really pulling for him, cause I was a supporter of his. Do you want me to show links from previous posts?

What I am saying is NDP incumbents outside of Toronto appear to have been safe. Inside Toronto both NDP and PC voters went Liberal. In the case of Han Dong in Trinity-Spadina he may have also had a particularly effective GOTV machine bringing former non-voters to the polls.

Outside the 416 PC voters went Liberal too but this did not hurt the NDP.

If Prue loses, Horwath should step down for that alone.

Here, here. I was thinking the same thing. He's got an urbane, downtowny style (and is a lawyer), but represents a working-class, suburban riding. I think he would be well positioned to maintain the gains Horwath has facilitated in the 905 and southwest while winning back downtown Toronto voters.

Personally, I think Horwath could stay, but the media's (Star, CBC, mostly), Gang of 34 NDP "supporters'" and private sector unions' campaign against her may have stained her image among downtowners.
