The Shirtless Jogger What is Your Take?

By now you have heard about the Shirtless Jogger confronting Mayor Ford on Canada Day.

Brother Doug Ford has come out to raise questions about not only the jogger's mental state, but whether or not he should continue teaching.

Doug Ford, is saying the Shirtless Jogger (who is a teacher) was “indoctrinating” his pupils.

Ford told reporters at city hall Wednesday that Killoran was a “bad apple” among Ontario teachers. He also quoted an alleged student of Killoran’s who called into Newstalk 1010 Tuesday night who said “all [Killoran] did was trash Rob Ford.”

“When you have a teacher, teaching his kids and indoctrinating his kids, in my opinion, about hatred towards one person in politics, something is wrong there,” Ford told reporters.

Doug Ford also accused of Killoran of making a racist slur but then qualified his accusation saying “racism doesn’t have to be about race.”

“What I did say, when you’re going after one person, it doesn’t have to be about religion, it doesn’t have to be about race, you can be racist against people that eat little red apples, you can be racist against people that have a drinking problem, you can be racist against people that are too fat,” he said.

“He was jumping around, doing back flips, going absolutely crazy, yelling at the top of his lungs, he was out of control. He obviously needs therapy, he obviously needs anger management.”

Joe Killoran dismissed Ford’s comments.

“Even if Doug’s insults about me were correct, Torontonians would still want answers to my questions,” Killoran told the Toronto Sun in an e-mail Wednesday.

“The fact he thinks people who are furious with him and his brother need anger management shows he still doesn’t understand how disgraceful his brother’s mayoralty has been.

“Maybe most Torontonians need anger management since the vast majority want his brother to resign.”

He argued Ford would rather insult him “than answer people’s questions.”

“Unfortunately for him, I’m not the issue,” Killoran said. “The focus should be on the dozens of unanswered questions surrounding (Ford) and his brother.”

He gave several examples — including Ford’s refusal to co-operate with police, insulting Toronto Police Chief Bill Blair, racial slurs, misogyny, homophobia, drunk driving and his association with Sandro Lisi.

Predictable attack on the person to avoid dealing with the comment.

If that was out of control then I think we may well have a problem of too much control.

The biggest problem in Canadian politics is not people angry but the lack of indignation. The lack of anger.

Anger is not entirely a useless emotion. It must be directed, controlled, made to be nonviolent, but it must not be eliminated and those justifiably angry should not get marginalized because they feel something.

We have enough borderline sociopaths in public life who appear to feel nothing.

Please feel free to see my remarks in the context of Tom Mulcair another person attacked for showing emotion in the context where people are getting hurt and the default position is not to give a damn, and if you do, for f's sakes don't let anyone know.

It's likely a non-issue, in the grand scheme.

If Ford is llosing support, it's because the people who voted for him originally are losing their tolerance for his self-destructive public behaviour, not because someone found a new way to call him racist, sexist and homophobic.

Something that is often forgotten in analyses of Ford's popularity: He was openly racist and homophobic as a councillor, and almost half the electorate still voted for him. So, it's not like hearing about these shortcomings one more time is going to make a difference.

Doug Ford maligned the jogger. Jogger didn't attack Ford about his weight (in the clips I've heard), or insult people with substance-abuse problems. Saying someone is not in a state in which he (or she) can govern a city is not an insult - in Ford's case it was simply the truth, and I think it remains so.

First, I did find the jogger to be assertive rather than agressive with his questions.

Next, the imagery is very powerful. It was not "elitists" like Olivia Chow, John Tory, or the media attacking Rob and Doug Ford. It was someone who looked like a regular "Joe" who was attacking the Fords. The shirtless Joe Killoran destroyed the image that Rob Ford represents that average folk.

Rob Ford will likely stay in the campaign until the very end. He may hate socialists. He may not be fond of Olivia Chow. However, I think he would go crazy if John Tory became the next mayor because that would be the voters' personal rejection of Rob Ford as the right wing/right of centre mayor.

Gee, I never thought of it that way. I guess I'm "racist" against morons who fake their way into public office and routinely make senseless comments like these that suggest they not only are incompetent, but possibly illiterate as well.

Really? He shows some justified public anger and an ability to express it coherently and that's all it takes?

Frankly I am sick of all parties rushing for celebrity candidates especially those enjoying their two minutes of fame.

I'd like to see the party run people who have good ideas and can express those. People who have more than a good criticism of what is going on but specific experience, thinking, talent for governing. People with good judgement.

Someone who makes even a well deserved hit on a vile opposition does not by that alone deserve interest to run in a seat.

I am not saying that this person could not qualify but he does not simply by virtue of what we know about him.

That said: I'd like the NDP to set up a 100 member public counsel. These would be people who see things from outside who can review platforms, communications, policies. These people would function as a public focus group, touchstone, and advisors. They should be from all walks of life, all ages and they would reflect those who do not run and who do not sit in the ivory towers. They should be equally from both genders and reflect the diversity of the population. They could help keep perspective. They would be asked to provide a couple hours a month reviewing what is going on in Ontario politics. I would not restrict them to NDP members although people friendly to the NDP would be more likely to participate. From time to time the NDP may want to have its people meet with members of a group like this.

All parties tend to have their leadership grow out of touch. This would be a forum to regularly touch back.

People who are just wanting to promote the party and say how great it is should not participate. This group should reflect the opinions of people who could be open to the NDP but like the majority of voters need to be convinced.

This person we are talking about in this thread: that's the kind of person who should be on this counsel or panel or whatever it is called.

Smells like the Tory campaign. Rob Ford used these dirty tactics in getting callers to radio shows to try and discourage Tory from running last time.
