El Salvador becomes fifth Latin American country to recall Israel envoy

El Salvador recalled its Israeli ambassador from Tel Aviv on Wednesday to protest the military operation in Gaza, making it the fifth Latin American country to do so.

In Photos: Activists clash with Israeli and Palestinian Authority forces during protest in Bethlehem

Since July 3rd, Palestinian youth have gathered nearly every night along Jerusalem-Hebron Road to demonstrate against Israeli forces following the murder of Mohammed Abu Khdeir and later the assault on Gaza.  A crowd gathers at Bab Ezkak Junction on Jerusalem-Hebron Road near the UN headquarters in Bethlehem and marches toward Rachel’s Tomb in solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza on July 18th, 2014

For the last four days, Palestinian Authority security forces have been deployed on the streets of Bethlehem to quell protests that have raged on Jerusalem-Hebron Road since the murder of Mohammed Abu Khdeir on July 2nd.

From July 4th to the 14th, 17 Palestinian demonstrators, most in their teens and early twenties were shot in the leg by Israeli forces with live ammunition during clashes that featured hundreds of shebab flooding the streets, typically an hour or two after the 8pm Iftar meal.  Dozens more have been treated for tear gas inhalation and injuries sustained from rubber bullets.

PA security forces subdued the protests on the evenings of the 15th, 16th and 17th of July but Friday night, activists managed to send them home....

Israel's Attempted Genocide Must Fail  -  by Denis Rancourt

http://dissidentvoice.org/2014/08/israels-attempted-genocide-must-fail/

"...The Zionist Project must now be stopped. This genocide must be stopped in its tracks, if it's the last significant geopolitical accomplishment of global civil society.

The world civil society must actuate arguably - the first stoppage of a nation-scale genocide pursued by a colonial invader.

In Canada, Stephen Harper is the 'Prime Minister of Canada for Israel.'

Trudeau and Mulcair are vying to be more Zionist than Harper. It's disgusting and humiliating for Canadians.

This has all gone too far. It's time to roll back Zionism in Canada and everywhere. Palestinians are doing the remarkable. The least we can do for ourselves is to cut back Zionists in our own countries."

Interesting, though there is a historical error:

in order to prevent and police-against any unified emergence of the Muslim World in the resource-rich and geopolitically central Middle East.

No, at the time it was the unified emergence of the Arab world, including secularists and non-Muslims. It is true that this could be extended to the two major Muslim-majority non Arab nations in the Middle East, Iran and Turkey. But the powerful core movement then was pan-Arabism.

Pan-Arabism was a component of the much broader movement of the Third World, or "non-aligned nations". Of course this included some major countries with Muslim majorities such as Indonesia and Pakistan, but it was not a faith-based movement.

The faith-based movement is a reactionary evolution due to the defeat of a revolutionary one. Obviously, for anti-imperialists, this does not mean supporting imperialist powers in a so-called "War of Civilizations" - especially in the light of the growth of fundamentalist religious justifications for killing and stealing among at least some of those powers as well!

I understand why Professor Rancourt doesn't want comments on the blog, at it would be a Zionist hatefest, but it was an odd historical error.

Montrealers Marched for 6 Hours to Express Solidarity with Palestine (August 1st)

(lots of pics)

A long evening march took place in Montreal this Friday in solidarity with Palestine. Hundreds of Montrealers took to the streets from 6pm to 12am. The protest was organized by PAJU- Palestinian & Jewish Unity. Protesters gathered to denounce Israeli apartheid and the ongoing occupation and colonization of Palestine. Among the protesters, Anarchopanda pour la gratuité scolaire was also marching in solidarity....

I tried to post this yesterday, but my post didn't show up. Technical Glitz?

There will be a DIE-IN at Thomas Mulcair's riding office, Outremont riding (his office is actually in Mile-End; part of Mile-End and part of Côte-des-Neiges are also in this riding).

12:45 pm, Tuesday 5 August, 154 avenue Laurier West (Mulcair's riding office) Montréal.

As the slaughter of innocent Palestinians living in Gaza continues; as
the destruction of homes, schools, hospitals and infrastructure
continues; as people in Gaza continue to live in the dark, without
electricity and water, because Israel destroyed its only power plant; as
Israeli forces kill children in their sleep in UNWRA shelters; as Israel
indiscriminately attacks a population living in an open air prison, with
no safe shelters, no Iron Dome, no army to defend them, and all under
the pretext of fighting Hamas militants; as over 85% of the dead are
civilians, and over 25% children, our leaders cheers on.

The (official) NDP and Mr. Mulcair fail to lay blame directly on Israel
for violating human rights and international law. Their official
position can hardly distinguished from Harper, except for some nice
words and some empty lip service paid to international law. (Some
individual NDP members are more out-spoken, but they face reprimands
from the leadership.)

COME AND TELL MULCAIR THAT WE EXPECT MORE FROM THE NDP, THE MOST
PROGRESSIVE PARTY IN PARLIAMENT. WE VOTED THEM INTO THE OFFICIAL
OPPOSITION. BUT DO THEY REFLECT OUR VALUES WITH THEIR DEAFENING SILENCE?

Please join the /DIE IN/. We will bring washable red poster paint, so if
you wish, dress in light clothes (e.g. a white T-shirt that you don't
mind messing up).

Bring banners if you have any.

For those who participate in the /die in/, we suggest you place on
yourself (or your face) a sign with the name and age of a murdered
Palestinian. We will prepare several to hand out, so don't worry if you
don't have time to prepare one.

Here is a link to the grim list of names of those murdered by Israel
(there are probably more up to dates ones):
http://www.aljazeera.com/news/middleeast/2014/07/gaza-under-seige-naming-dead-2014710105846549528.html.
If you chose a child, you are sure to name an innocent civilian.

UK Protesters Arrested After Occupying Factory Supplying IDF Drone Engines

The nine UK protesters occupying a factory that supplies drone engines to the Israel Defense Forces were all arrested on the roof of the building on Wednesday evening after remaining on top of it for over 36 hours in a standoff with local police and successfully shutting the factory down during that time.

It's not clear what prompted the arrests, as police had previously vowed to find a "peaceful resolution" to the standoff.

The group London Palestine Action chained the factory gates shut and chained themselves to the roof of the UAV Engines Limited factory in Shenstone, England, around 5 a.m. Tuesday, saying they had enough food to stay a week....

I don't know who reads rabble news, but this article also features photos and a short account of our die-in at Thomas Mulcair's riding office:

http://rabble.ca/news/2014/08/dear-ndp-stop-apologizing-war-crimes-and-b...

But hey, we also have to target Trudeau. I don't know anyone who voted for him (many at the die-in live in Outremont riding and did vote for Mulcair) but we can't let the upper-class twitnik off.

'An Israel Free Zone': UK MP Says Brandford Doesn't Want Israeli Goods, Services or Visitors

http://rt.com/uk/178816-israel-free-zone-galloway/

"George Galloway has called for the British city of Bradford to issue a blanket of Israeli goods, services, academics and even tourists. 'We don't want any Israeli goods. We don't want any Israeli services. We don't want any Israeli academics, coming to the University or the college, he added..."

Guess I might as well put this here.

No one can be insensitive to this conflict, which has claimed so many innocent civilian lives, particularly among Palestinians. While Liberals and Conservatives were attending solidarity rallies with Israel, New Democrats were working behind the scenes to urge Israeli, Palestinian and Egyptian representatives to reach an immediate ceasefire.

Only New Democrats have called for Canadian aid to Gaza. Only Tom Mulcair has written to Harper in support of Dr. Izzeldin Abuelaish’s initiative to treat injured Gazan children in Canada.

Mr. Siddiqui incorrectly accuses the NDP of “silent assent” to the land crossing and naval blockade of Gaza. On July 22, Tom Mulcair stated “with peace, the sustained reopening of crossing points must also be ensured. Our position is in keeping with UN Security Council resolution 1860 adopted in 2009.”

South Africa to Sue Citizens Serving Israel Military

http://www.presstv.com/detail/2014/08/09/374621/s-africa-to-sue-citizens...

"South African authorities have warned that the will prosecute nationals who serve in the Israeli military.."

If we had a real government operating as something other than simply 'an embassy for Benjamin Netanyahu', similar charges would be used to curtail Canadian nationals from serving in the IDF as well.

[url=http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/hamilton/news/gaza-conflict-protesters-mar... conflict protesters march through downtown Hamilton[/url]

Quote:

More than 250 demonstrators took to the streets in downtown Hamilton Saturday to protest the violence in Gaza, as fighting between Israel and Hamas continues after the collapse of a three-day truce.

The march, dubbed as All Out for Gaza, aims to pressure Israel to end the blockage of the coastal territory, organizers said. The group also protested the Harper government's support of Israel and urged the opposition parties to speak up for Palestinians. [...]

Before ending the march in front of the Federal Building, demonstrators stopped at NDP MP David Christopherson's constituency office and urged the opposition to stand up to the Harper government and speak for the Palestinians.

“NDP, get a spine. Stand up for Palestine,” the demonstrators chanted.

That is one of their talking points. They repeat it constantly, in any country, in any language. It is bullshit.

Rival Protests Meet in Front of Israeli Consulate

http://www.thestar.com/news/gta/2014/08/10/rival_protests_meet_in_front_...

"...Brandishing Canadian flags and placards calling to free Gaza from Hamas, the pro-Israel contingent stood on the northside, in front of the Israeli consulate, and played Bob Marley over the loudspeakers.

'That's a pro-Hamas rally and we're countering it,' said Meir Weinstein director of the Jewish Defence League of Canada. 'The goal here is to stand up against support for terrorist groups.'

Why is the 'pro-Israeli contingent' ALWAYS represented by Meir Weinstein and the JDL, in such circumstances, for as long as I can recall. Surely even they appreciate the implications of this Kahanist-Kachist hate-group's disciple's leadership. It's akin to  being represented by the KKK or something similar.

Yesterday's Montréal march was great, despite the oppressive heat. It was wonderful to see contingents, and sponsorship, by the FTQ and CSN, women's organizations, FRAPRU, ASSÉ, QS, IJV, PAJU - even the Bloc - Mario Beaulieu was supposed to be there, but I didn't see him. Le Devoir said there were 10,000 marchers.

In pictures: Cape Town comes out in numbers for Gaza

The exact number of people in Cape Town who came out in support of Gaza on Saturday is still being disputed. Estimates put the crowd between 150,000 and 200,000 people. And as protest marches go, it certainly was large. The demonstration was organised by the National Coalition for Palestine which represents over 30 religious and civil society organisations, trade unions and political parties. Protestors descended on District Six, where former Archbishop Desmond Tutu addressed the crowd. They then marched to Parliament in the city centre, demanding freedom for Palestinians and justice for war crimes committed in Gaza

Nobel Laureate Malala Donates $50,000 to Gaza

Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Malala Yousafzai announced Wednesday that she is donating $50,000 to rebuild schools in Gaza.

The amount represents the full proceeds of the World’s Children’s Prize for the Rights of the Child, sometimes called the "Children's Nobel," which the 17-year-old education activist was awarded in Sweden on Wednesday.

Nearly two million children voted to give the award to Malala, as she is widely known, for her perilous activism for girls' education rights. She is the first person to win the Nobel Peace Prize and World’s Children’s Prize in the same year.

"I am donating these funds to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA), which is performing heroic work to serve children in Gaza, in very difficult circumstances," she said.

"The needs are overwhelming—more than half of Gaza’s population is under 18 years of age. They want and deserve quality education, hope and real opportunities to build a future," she added.

"This funding will help rebuild the 83 schools damaged during the recent conflict. Innocent Palestinian children have suffered terribly and for too long," she said....
