Who is the Islamic State? (aka ISIS, aka ISIL)

My first, and second immediate reaction of the recent beheadings of the two American journalists is that the killer himself should be beheaded in a slow and painful way. It is a savage act of terror and I have nothing but hatred and revenge against that man who some called Jihadist John.

The larger question is, who is responsible for the creation of ISIS or ISAL?

No doubt in my mind the U.S intervention in Syria and occupation and invasion of Iraq contributed to the rise of this militant terror group.

Unfortunately,  I do not see any solution to the failed state of Syria or the religious wars between Sunni and Shiite.  Maybe the best solution is to leave them alone.

More U.N or U.S/UK formed coalition intervention will not solve the problem as much as I want that killer to be arrested, tried, and put to death. I am usually against the death penalty but I have never hated as much a cold blooded killer like him before. Call me emotional. Everybody die everyday I know. People, children in Gaza die , I know. I went to protest those as well.

The reality of US policy is to support the government of Iraq, but not Syria, against ISIS. But one reason that group has been able to grow so strong in Iraq is that it can draw on its resources and fighters in Syria. Not everything that went wrong in Iraq was the fault of Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki, as has now become the political and media consensus in the West. Iraqi politicians have been telling me for the last two years that foreign backing for the Sunni revolt in Syria would inevitably destabilize their country as well. This has now happened.

The rage will only eat us up and not make it any better. Some terrible stuff is going on; it is always going on. Now, we are more interconnected than ever, and we can find out about one brutal killing across the world in seconds. The source, has to be injustice. Let us fight that however we can.

Pack it up and leave ,stop flights in or out of the entire Middle East and let them have their civil wars.

No need to worry about precious Israel as they can defend themselves quite well...(don't they have nukes? )

But it's more likely that Operation Occupy Iraq 2.0 will happen, the 'good guys' will intervene,a religious war will break out regardlessly and more and more of our civil liberties (what little is left) will be taken away.

You can't win.

Fuck the Middle East.

This shit doesn't help.

There is not that much difference between the unaltered Wahhabi ideology ISIS espouses and the puritanical beliefs of the first white conquerors in North America. The anti-imperial/imperial duality is only one commonality. Indeed I believe that there are quite a lot of parallels between both movements."

America's Chechen Proxy Fighters: The Big Picture Everone Has Missed  -  by Henry Kamens

http://journal-neo.org/2014/10/19/america-s-chechen-proxy-fighters-the-b...

"The media is awash with expert commentary on the various world trouble spots. Many of the reports you see make similar claims about the presence of ethnic Chechens amongst the various fighting forces in Iraq, Syria, Kenya, Ukraine and other war-torn states that the US has vested interests in.

On July 22, Cristina Maza, writing in the Balkanist, stated that 'according to Murad Batal al-Shishani, a London-based expert on Islamic groups and a specialist on Islamic movements in Chechnya, the majority of the Chechen fighters in Syria right now are from the Pankisi Gorge.' [Georgia]

The Chechens being recruited in the Pankisi Gorge did not end up there by accident, they were inserted by the CIA and funded and trained in terrorist warfare by the CIA in order to destabilize other countries the US was interested in. One of the Chechens who appeared in Pankisi Gorge at that time was Imran Akhmadov. He is one of the leaders of ISIL.

He had in fact been provided with a fake Georgian passport, in the name Kavtarashvili, and shipped to Turkey by the US Embassy when people started enquiring about him. The snipers in Maidan Square, who shot at everyone indiscriminately and were also described as Chechens, were similarly removed from the scene and sent to Syria, on fake Georgian passports when it was reported that they were neither protesters nor Ukrainian security services personnel.

All we are seeing now is part of a long lasting, co-ordinated programme of state-sponsored terrorism conducted by the guardians of freedom and democracy, using people it labels as terrorists who it has armed and trained to do all these things. Iraq, Syria, Ukraine, all the conflicts we are seeing are part of the same programme..."

Driver runs over two Canadian soldiers outside Montreal, police shoot and kill driver after high-speed chase

More from Postmedia News

A man in his 30s was shot dead by police south of Montreal on Monday morning after two Canadian soldiers were hit by a car. Police say the man fled the scene of the accident when police arrived, was involved in a chase, lost control of his car and flipped it, got out of the car and ran at police with a knife.

It began just before noon, when the soldiers were hit in the parking lot of a strip mall in St-Jean-sur-Richelieu and the suspect sped off. The regional police followed him and he lost control at an intersection.

When police caught up, the suspect climbed out of his car, a knife in his hand, and ran at them. Police opened fire and he died.
Because the local St-Jean-sur-Richelieu police were involved in a fatality, another police force, in this case the Sûrété du Québec, has taken over the investigation.

Anyway, I think the insinuation that the two Canadian Forces personnel are somehow linked to ISIS is offensive. We should be supporting our troops, especially in wartime, not undermining them.

Come now Unionist, you just never know.  Those "Canadians" could very well have been sleeper agents who jumped out infront of that poor driver in an attempt to. uhhh, I don't know, scare him?   They probably threw that knife in his car at the same time and later when he was running at the cops with the knife he just wanted to  show them the evidence.

Word of warning to all those who may wish to change your names along with your religion - should it be a Muslim name and your new religion Islam, chances are you will be on a watch-list with the PTB guaging the progress of your "radicalization".

I'm so relieved my half-brother and his family converted to some new age religion after doing a test run with Islam (including changing their first names) back in the 70s. Who knows what mess of trouble they might have gotten into if the conversion had taken place in this century.

As for this "terrorist" incident, if that is the best ISIS can do as far as a terrorist attack on foreign soil, I'm sure their credibility in the eyes of fellow non-affiliated Jihadists must be in tatters.

I'm no security expert or police investigator but it sounds like the poor man was suffering from mental illness. Our media, governments and police are stupid twits - especially if they expect us to swallow this bullshit.

I wish you were right, laine. I don't think they're stupid at all. History shows that bloodcurdling panic-mongering can lead people to do horrible things, against their neighbours, against themselves - overnight - especially when there's no profound tradition and movement of opposition. A few horror stories about Indigenous warriors, or Muslim radicals, or Japanese, or Ukrainians, or Jews, ... or about Saddam or Gaddafi or Taliban or ISIS... and anything goes. You know the history in Canada and abroad as well as I do.

Harper planted a question in the House just so as to sow the "terrorism" seed, so as to: 1) retroactively justify his plunging Canada into a criminal act of aggression and war; and 2) prepare the terrain for more repressive legislation. I wish we could rely entirely on people's intelligence to oppose what he's doing.

The real secret of Iraq's Germ Weapons  -  by Eric Margolis

http://www.informationclearinghouse.info/article40011.htm

"While covering Iraq in 1990 - just before the first massive US bombing campaign - I discovered the US and Britain had secretly built a germ weapons arsenal for Iraq to use against Iran in the eight year Iran-Iraq War.

I found two British scientists who had been employed at Iraq's top secret Salman Pak chemical and biowarfare laboratory near Baghdad. The Brits confided to me they were part of a large technical team secretly organized and 'seconded' to Iraq in the mid-1980s by the British government and the MI6 Secret Intelligence Service.

Their goal was to develop and 'weaponize' anthrax, plague, botulism and other pathogens for use as tactical germ weapons. The feed stock for the germ weapons came from a US laboratory in Maryland - approved by the US government.

Why are these events of a quarter century ago relevant today? Because the current horrible mess in Iraq and Syria is a direct result of the US-led invasion of Iraq in 2003.

ISIS is a manufactured monster that could have crawled out of the germ warfare plant at Salman Pak."

Reducing this to "a few horror stories" is wrong. "Religious" extremism almost always targets women specifically. A simple beheading isn't enough. Women need to be stripped naked, raped, tortured and then beheaded. Or shot. Or have acid thrown at their faces. Atrocities committed in the name of religion have nothing to do with either culture of spiritual befief. It's about power, and what threatens power.

Unionist

I fully agree with your point, Meg, but I was making a different one, not necessarily connected with religion or extremism. I was trying to make the point that it doesn't take much to turn peaceful folks into warriors and genocidaires - as we saw in Rwanda, or Germany and Eastern Europe in the 30s-40s, or to justify invasions (Gulf of Tonkin, babies unplugged from incubators by Saddam in Kuwait, stonings of women by the Taliban). Stephen Harper and his thugs would tolerate or generate Islamophobic race riots if it helped consolidate his war hero legacy and his service to the "West".

Already this morning, representatives of the Muslim community are being asked by radio hosts what "they" can do to help avoid incidents like the one in St-Jean-sur-Richelieu. It's painful to listen to these Muslim representatives remaining very diplomatic, showing concern, etc. - without telling these hosts where can shove their xenophobic questions.

At an absolute minimum, that one incident, combined with the beheadings, will lead to more repressive "anti-terror" legislation being tabled. They'll have to move quickly too, while the shock and awe is still fresh in people's minds.

MegB

I agree, some people can be relatively easy to manipulate into committing atrocities. When I put quotes around "religious" I meant to convey that it has little or nothing to do with religion but everything to do with power.

What I see going on with "anti-terrorist" legislation is the manufacturing of consent for the invasion of other countries and the oppression of citizens. Lone individuals aren't terrorists - terrorism is highly organized, hierarchical, patriarchal. To so loosely apply the term "terrorism" to such a wide range of activities (as the Harper government is doing in a way that hasn't been as extreme since the McCarthy era) ensures the word loses its meaning. The word "terrorism" is just another tool in the government arsenal for control of its electorate.
