I'm guessing this piece of totalitarian legislation will get little opposition in the House:
Steven Blaney, the public safety minister, said Monday’s attack was “clearly linked to terrorist ideology.” Mr. Blaney said last week that he was about to introduce legislation explicitly allowing Canadian intelligence agencies to circumvent laws that prevent them from spying on Canadians by allowing foreign agencies, including those of the United States, to do it for them. The bill would also let those agencies keep the identities of their sources secret, Mr. Blaney said.

Now they have a second attack by a lone wolf presumed to be ISIL influenced Islamist radical in Ottawa. Already I've recieved a call asking if I saw the news - ISIS attack on Parliament? So the OTT spin has begun again.
According to the CBC there has been no briefings by any police agency yet.
There is nothing to prevent them from spying on birdwatchers.
These attacks are very serious, but safeguards are required to prevent this being used to repress "dissidents" who have nothing to do with terrorism. I was very young in 1970, but remember many people who had absolutely nothing to do with the FLQ kidnappers being rounded up.
1 shooter dead inside Parliament buildings, but it apears there are others still on the loose.
I have friends on Parliament Hill. They're on Facebook saying that tehy're hiding under their desks and police are telling everyone not to move, to stay away from windows and to barricade doors.
All Canadian Armed Forces bases have been closed to the public across the country probably and hopefully just as a precaution.
Apparently only a few security guards at parliment hill were armed, that seems weird to have guards that aren't armed.
I'm not sure but it sounds like they targeted one of the young soldiers who was standing guard on parliment. Those guys and girls are usually part time soldiers who are in college or university. I wonder if they'll start arming soldiers now.

There was a good interview with Charlie Angus, if anything can be good about this, on the CBC a short while ago.

The one shot was a ceremonial guard at the War Memorial so he would have been carrying an antique weapon, (so I heard).
Also heard Kevin Vickers shot the shooter but that there has also been an incident at Rideau Hall.
They have closed down a big chunk of central Ottawa, with stories flying of multiple gunmen and shootings as well in the Rideau Centre - a big shopping mall just down the road. Downtown has come to a standstill apart from police.

As far as I know the guards there carry our current issue assault rifles however they have no ammo so it's a metal and plastic club.
I believe the alleged other shooting was at the Rideau Centre (shopping mall) not Rideau Hall (residence of Governor-General).
This is going to have profound ramifications for our country. I wonder if these shooters are on the so-called CSIS list of 90.
Fuck, with all the police with drawn guns, and armoured vehilces roaming around, Ottawa is now beginning to look quite different than ever before.
The BBC has live coverage of the event right now as well, and they are reported on all the conflicting info as well as the live footage of what is happening: http://www.bbc.com/news/live/world-us-canada-29728503
Shots at Rideau Centre in downtown Ottawa just reported by BBC and Associated Press.
Shooting was outside Rideau shopping centre.
University of Ottawa, where I work, is on lockdown. Very quiet and unnerving. "Credible reports" (whatever that means) stating there may be as many as five shooters. They have JTF-2 counter-terrorism forces deployed on the roofs, etc.
Unreal.
Inside the Rideau Centre.
Be safe pookie

Unreal.
And our building has just been put in lockdown here too, - just east of the University.
To all babblers in Ottawa - be safe.

Doors to Canadian Embassy in Washington locked down
Our staff in Ottawa are safe, so far.
There is lots of information out there, and lots of conflicting information out there.
But this is what we (think) we know so far based on reports from several media outlets:
1. shooting in three separate locations: War Memorial, Parliament Hill and Rideau Centre mall (though inside or outside is still to be confirmed)
2. Parliament building shooter has been shot
3. Solider shot in Parliament building; no update to his condition yet
4. police still searching for other shooter(s) [reports are suggesting two or three shooters]
Also, most of Ottawa is in lockdown, including government buildings, U of Ottawa, Police headquaters, etc.
If you are in Ottawa, police (and everyone) say please stay indoors.
Craig Scott, NDP MP, says MPs and staffers owes their lives to Kevin Vickers who took out the shooter in the Parliament buildings..
There was not a shooting at the Rideau Centre but near the Rideau Centre, and situation is still fluid.
PM has cancelled all pre-arranged activities scheduled for today and will be making a statement later on today
Soldier shot at Parliament Hill is from Hamilton - no details on his condition yet.
There may be an RCMP briefing within half hour.
A second person has arrived at hospital with a gunshot wound.
Hospital confirms that two gunshot victims are en route to ER.
Ottawa Police just stated on CBC still lookings for suspects (plural) on the loose in the Ottawa area.
MP constituency offices are being closed across the country.
White House press briefing in about 15 minutes.
NBC reported about 10 days ago hightened alert for Canada which was discounted in some quarters.
Vickers uninjured now in debriefing with Ottawa Police.
Ottawa's police force has confirmed to CBC that they are looking for multiple suspects. He said no-one was under arrest at the moment, adding that he was unable to confirm whether or not one or more shooter had been shot.
Kate Purchase (Director of Communications for Justin Trudeau)
@JustinTrudeau is safe and in a secure location.
Jason Kenny tweeted condolences to family of soldier killed.
CTV is reporting that Jason Kenney may have erred in reporting that the solider has died.
Not sure what business it was of his to interject himself into reporting on the health status of the injured solider anyway.
How very sad!
CBC has confirmed that war memorial soldier has died.
What a fucked up world.
CBC has confirmed that war memorial soldier has died.
ETA: and they have now walked that back. Madness.
