..they want you to listen. can hear what they want?

Shut It Down! (with pics)

The Galleria Mall in St. Louis was shut down today as hundreds of black and white activists walked chanting through the enormous shopping center on "Black Friday".  We learned about the action just before it began and when we arrived inside the mall many activists were already there leading chants like:

  • Shut it down
  • Indict, convict, put the killer cops in jail - the whole damn system is guilty as hell
  • No justice, no peace
  • Forward together, no going back
  • No Black Friday
  • Hands up, don't shoot
  • Stop shopping, join the movement

As the crowd swelled it took over both floors of the mall and about half the stores pulled down the security gates to close their shop.  Many of the workers inside the stores stood behind their gates and clapped, chanted and filmed the protest.  The best moment was when two women in Macy's uniforms led the rousing chant "No Black Friday".

Which doesn't answer the question.  What do they want with respect to Wilson?  Does he deserve to have the evidence heard and someone make a decision as to whether or not to charge him based on that evidence?  Or do they just want him convicted regardless of the facts of the case?

Maybe when you stop positing false choices and referencing racialized violence as a desired outcome from the same people who were its subjects I'll consider your questions. Until then, you need to check yourself.

Nonsense - no false choices.

The "social goal" is one thing but that's a separate matter from the Ferguson case.

Either Wilson is guilty or he isn't and whether or not he should be charged and tried is dependent on the evidence.  The only thing that would have sastified the protesters with respect to Ferguson would be to see the grand jury indict Wilson and then have him found guilty at trial.

Which wasnt going to happen, nor will it for the cop who shot a 12yr old in Ohio. Nor should it.

Now the one that shot a black guy in walmart for having a air rifle , from fucking walmarts own shelves. That would be an excellent case for a trial

NAACP Marchers to Trek 120 Miles From Ferguson to Mo. State Capital (seven-day march)

To call attention to what it sees as a flawed U.S. criminal justice system after a grand jury declined to indict police officer Darren Wilson in the shooting death of unarmed Michael Brown, 18, the NAACP on Saturday is to begin a 120-mile, seven-day protest march from Ferguson, Mo., to the governor’s mansion in Jefferson City.

The march is to begin at 12 p.m. Central at the Canfield Green Apartments in Ferguson, near where Brown was shot and his body left lying in the street for hours on Aug. 9, the NAACP said in a statement. The purpose of the march is to call for new leadership of the Ferguson Police Department, beginning with the police chief, and for reforms of police practice and culture in Ferguson and across the country, the release states.

“Our ‘Journey for Justice: Ferguson to Jefferson City’ march is the first of many demonstrations to show both the country and the world that the NAACP and our allies will not stand down until systemic change, accountability and justice in cases of police misconduct are served for Michael Brown and the countless other men and women who lost their lives to such police misconduct,” Cornell William Brooks, NAACP president and CEO, said in the statement. Our thoughts and prayers are with Michael Brown’s family.”...

I'd rather the bingo card be called "conservative/right winger bingo" as opposed to "white opinions bingo", because not all white people feel that way about the Ferguson issue and there are PoC (usually conservatives) who echo those sentiments, too.

The "bad stuff happening to a white person story" spot kind of hits a nerve for me, because these anecdotes are some how used to justify the labeling of an entire race in a negative light despite being just that, circumstantial evidence.  I also think the concept of thinly veiled racism goes over the head of certain right-leaning whites, I can see this when they make complaints about stuff like "how they can't say anything about black people or else they will be considered racist", because a lot of the so-called criticism they want to make about PoCs are based on incorrect information or stats taken out of context and are racist.  The allegations of the rioting in Ferguson being a sign of black people being prone to such events is an example of this, just because someone isn't dropping n-bombs doesn't mean it isn't racist.

Dehumanizing the Black Lives of America: Michael Eric Dyson on Ferguson, Police Brutality and Race

quote:

Absolutely, and we decry when cases of flagrant violation occur in other countries. We are upset when we think due process is not acknowledged. We are outraged when we think that people don’t have access to evidence and able to defend themselves, or at least people who are concerned about the case, defend a particular point of view. We had a full on trial, except we didn’t have anybody defending Mike Brown or his memory or his point of view. We had no testimony that was put forth by a defense lawyer that might have repudiated several of the things that officer Wilson said. And then we had a prosecutor who was acting as a defense attorney for Officer Wilson. And there is a sad, tragically debility about what happened because Robert McCulloch, the prosecutor, has never brought a case against a police person who has been accused of killing a black person there in the area.....

Prosecutor Manipulates Grand Jury Process to Shield Officer

You know the fix is in when a suspect who shot an unarmed man voluntarily provides four hours of un-cross examined testimony to a grand jury without taking the Fifth.

quote:

In a normal grand jury proceeding, the prosecutor presents evidence for a few days and then asks the grand jurors to return an indictment, which they nearly always do. Of 162,000 federal cases in 2010, grand juries failed to indict in only 11 of them, according the Bureau of Justice Statistics.

The standard of proof for a grand jury to indict is only probable cause to believe the suspect committed a crime. It is not proof beyond a reasonable doubt, which is required for conviction at trial. Yet McCulloch's team presented testimony and documents to the panel for three months, evidence not subjected to adversarial testing by cross-examination....

St. Louis police officers condemned players on the NFL's Rams who made a "hands up, don't shoot" gesture before Sunday's home game against the Oakland Raiders.

Stedman Bailey, Tavon Austin, Jared Cook, Chris Givens, and Kenny Britt raised their hands above their heads during pre-game introductions. The gesture has been seen in the protest against a grand jury's decision not to indict officer Darren Wilson in connection with the shooting death of Michael Brown in the St. Louis suburb of Ferguson, Mo.

I don't know why it took so long for the penny to drop, but Maysie's link in the OP recalls bell hooks' piece, Killing Rage, from what, 20 years ago?

I am unsure about the copyright etiquette on this, but I did find a pdf of the short essay here: http://www.thinkingtogether.org/rcream/archive/old/s2006/comp/killingrag... -- I will remove it if it's out of bounds. But really, just buy the book!

Currently, we are daily bombarded with mass media images of black rage, usually personified by angry young black males wreaking havoc upon the “innocent,” that teach everyone in the culture to see this rage as useless, without meaning, destructive. This one-dimensional misrepresentation of the power of rage helps maintain the status quo. Censoring militant response to race and racism, it ensures that there will be no revolutionary effort to gather that rage and use it for constructive social change.

What oppressive language and/or baiting tactics?

All I've ever said is that the people screaming for "Justice for Michael Brown" want one thing and one thing only.  They want to see Wilson indicted and when he goes to trial they want him found guilty.  Fact is, they don't care about the evidence.  All they want is a conviction.  Kind of reminds me of the old Westerns I watched on TV as a kid.  "You'll get a fair trial.  Then hung."

Another Killing in Ferguson Leaves a Family Grappling With the Unknown

Quote:

Just up the road from the memorial of stuffed animals and candles that has become a place of pilgrimage and protest over the shooting death of Michael Brown, there is an empty parking lot where another young black man was killed last week on the night this city erupted in rage.

There are no rallies or news cameras there, no signs or ribbons to mark the spot where, the police say, Deandre Joshua, 20, was shot once in the head and then set on fire inside his car. He was the only person killed during the fires, looting and riots that shook the city after a grand jury declined to indict a white police officer in Mr. Brown’s killing. But in the days since, Mr. Joshua’s death has largely become a footnote to Ferguson’s story — an open homicide case and a bitter mystery for his family.

Knox County cop fired immediately after photos show brutal choking of student

Quote:

Usually, after charges of police brutality, police officials take their time reacting while they follow procedure to determine who did what. But this episode in Knoxville, Tenn., was so extreme and well-documented that the local sheriff fired the officer immediately.

Frank Phillips, a Knox County Sheriff’s officer, was fired Sunday night after a series of pictures taken by photographer John Messner were published in the Daily Mail in Britain. They showed an officer identified by the Sheriff’s Office as Phillips grabbing 21-year-old college student Jarod Dotson around the neck and squeezing him until he fell to his knees.

Being a white college student really makes a difference between life and death at the hands of the cops.

A month after the incident:

Deputy Who Choked Student Gets To Retire, Won’t Face Charges

Quote:

The Tennessee sheriff’s deputy who choked an already restrained and unarmed college student until the 23-year-old passed out has been allowed to retire from the police force, and will not face criminal assault charges.

....

The incident occurred last month in the aftermath of an end-of-classes party at the UT campus. Raucous and inebriated students allegedly threw beer bottles at cop cars, necessitating several arrests. Dotson was one of those arrested. He did not resist or disregard police orders, instead quietly accompanying an officer to a squad car. Dotson was motionless when Phillips took hold of his neck and began choking him. The student eventually fell to the ground, unconscious.

Eric Garner's Wife Lashes Out at Cop Who Killed Her Husband

Quote:
The time for remorse would have been when my husband was yelling to breathe. That would have been the time for him to show some type of remorse or some type of care for another human being’s life- when he was screaming eleven times that he can’t breathe! So there’s nothing that him, or his prayers, or anything else would make me feel any different. No I don’t accept his apology. No I could care less about his condolences. No I could care less- he’s still working, he’s still getting a paycheck, he’s still feeding his kids. And my husband is six feet under, and I’m looking for a way to feed my kids now. Who’s gonna play Santa Claus for my grandkids this year, because he played Santa Claus for my grandkids…who’s going to do that now?

I have such a hard time reading some of these accounts, but it's vital to listen. And here in Canada, the Globe published a short interview with Sherene Razack, who provides a Canadian context on racialized brutality:

What keeps you up at night?

The growing, institutionalized dehumanization towards specific groups. It’s as though society is evolving based on the principle that human life doesn’t matter. Every morning, I read about 10 things that make me think we’re growing increasingly distant from each other. It begins with race and becomes a structure that invades everything. White people routinely dehumanize indigenous people. I’m talking of a spectrum of violent acts, like police officers who drive a man out of the city and leave him to freeze to death. The principle that this person’s life is not worth as much as yours is both an everyday act and a state practice. Look at the “tough on crime” initiatives that conservatives love. What kind of cruelty and disregard for human life do these kinds of policies come out of?

White America’s scary delusion: Why its sense of black humanity is so skewed

Quote:

The invisibility of black rage, black pain and black humanity are all elements of the same problem. That problem is a framework problem. Because Darren Wilson did not use any racial slur to refer to Michael Brown, our current racial frameworks are inadequate for helping your average all-American white people think through the contours of this encounter. That problem has plagued us since the beginning of this case; it dogged us throughout the Zimmerman trial; and it is helped along by the deep emotional dishonesty that characterizes race relations in the country.

Because of this framework problem, this epistemology problem, white people find black protests to be absolutely, utterly unreasonable, in light of the “evidence.” Many of these folks have never stopped to consider the fact that “reason,” and “evidence,” are not race-neutral concepts. What is a reasonable conclusion to draw for people who have never had the entirety of their lives shaped by a negative perception of skin tone, is an entirely unreasonable set of conclusions to draw for people who have.

For instance, to believe that Michael Brown charged at Darren Wilson in the midst of a hail of gunfire is to believe that black people are monsters, mythical superhuman creatures, who do not understand the physics of bullets, even as they rip through flesh. To white people, who co-sign Wilson’s account of events, this seems like an entirely reasonable assertion, one helped along by a lifetime of media consumption that represents black masculinity as magical, monstrous and mythic.

....

That inability to see black people as human, as vulnerable, as children, as people worthy of protecting is an epistemology problem, a framework problem, a problem about how our experiences shape what we are and are not able to know. The limitations of our frameworks are helped along by willful ignorance and withholding of empathy.

....

Until white people are ready to relieve themselves of an all-consuming belief in a colorblind legal system, ready to recognize the violence at the core of the ideology of whiteness (which is, I hope you hear me saying, different from calling all white people violent), ready to adopt a new framework, we can’t talk.

If it’s any consolation, you are not alone. Non-whites have been twisted into self-hatred and manipulated into pursuing a path of whiteness, a perverted journey whose destination one can never reach. Dorchester middle-school students protest

Students in the upper grades at the Joseph Lee K-8 School in Dorchester held a two-hour Black Lives Matter protest this morning.

Kids who'd brought in permission slips walked from the school to the intersection of Blue Hill and Talbot avenues, where they chanted slogans such as "Hands up! Don't Shoot!" and "What do we want? Justice! When do we want it? Now!"

Several teachers stood with them; three BPD cruisers and officers were parked on Blue Hill Avenue. Many passing motorists honked in support.

Here's a memo that was sent to students:

"We, the students and the staff of the Joseph Lee School are planning a demonstration to support and increase awareness that ALL lives matter, inspired by the deaths of Trayvon Martin, Michael Brown, Eric Garner, and so many more. We need not only the voices of our youth but the support of the adults to protest against the unjust police brutality, inequality, and racial profiling taking place across the nation as well as right here in our community. We not only want the support from YOU but the support from your family, too. These injustices based on race have been happening our whole lives. If the majority of our society have accepted same sex marriage, why can’t we come together as a community to address racial inequalities?

This demonstration is a serious matter that effects our entire community. Just think, Trayvon Martin and Michael Brown could have been a student at this school ... or could even have been you.

The school has given us permission to not wear school uniforms on the 16th. Please wear all black attire to demonstrate unity. Remember that it is going to be cold!! Dress warm."

In the Struggle Against Police Violence, the Youth Shall Lead

quote:

This new movement is being led by mostly young black women who won’t allow us to forget that black women’s lives matter, too (Columbia University Law professor Kimberle Crenshaw was present with a large banner that featured the pictues and names of black women and girls also killed by police). It is drawing in diverse crowds, including white allies who are not calling for gradual change, but a total end to white supremacy. The people in the street have neck tattoos, are dressed in sagging skinny jeans, and curse loudly (among the more popular chants: “BACK UP, BACK UP, WE WANT FREEDOM, FREEDOM, ALL THESE RACIST ASS COPS, WE DON’T NEED ‘EM, NEED ‘EM!” and “WHO SHUT SHIT DOWN? WE SHUT SHIT DOWN!”). The movement doesn’t look or sound like anything our elders remember (or were taught) about the civil rights era. And that’s OK. We have a new fight. We have to create a new model of resistance.

Everyone has a role to play, and order for a movement to be successful, everyone (young and old) must understand what that role is and not be afraid to shift into a new one when the time for that comes.

Getting Rid of Al Sharpton and the Misleadership Class

“The collaborating Black classes moved quickly to limit Ferguson-related demands to those that were politically palatable to the president.”

Black America enters 2015 on a radically different political trajectory than could have been imagined prior to August 9. When the youth of Ferguson stood up to the militarized police to demand justice for Michael Brown, they challenged not only the legitimacy of the coercive organs of the State, but also the fitness for leadership of the accommodationist Black political class.

Although many of the young activists may not have been aware that they were crossing a kind of Rubicon, the threat that “Ferguson” represented to the post-Sixties order was immediately evident to the Black misleaders that have colluded with the mass incarceration regime for the past two generations. Instinctively drawn to the service of Power, and determined to protect the legacy of the Black icon in the White House, the collaborating Black classes moved quickly to limit Ferguson-related demands to those that were politically palatable to the president, such as body-cameras for cops, and to divert the nascent movement away from confrontation with the State and its police.

It soon became obvious that the Al Sharptons of the community were attempting to isolate the core Ferguson activists and prevent the coalescing of a youth-led national Black movement – especially one that might act in concert with non-Blacks in the remnants of the anti-war and Occupy movements.

The size, political content and momentum of the movement-in-the-making has caused the ground to shift beneath the Black misleaders’ feet. “Black Lives Matter” means all Black lives, not just the privileged minority that was catapulted into leadership by the demise of legal apartheid half a century ago and has pursued its own selfish class interests, ever since. “I Can’t Breathe” is a cry from those whose hopes and dreams have been put on permanent lockdown by a police and penal system that is specially designed to strangle Black liberationist aspirations, yet operates at full throttle in the nominally Black-controlled cities of the nation under the maintenance and protection of Black Democrats....

http://www.blackagendareport.com/node/14577

quote:

Black activist youth – a self-aware cohort that grows larger every day – did not pick a fight with Black elected officials and the “traditional” civil rights organizations. Generally speaking, Black young people want to fight the white powers-that-be, and have little appetite for confrontation with the Black community’s secular and clergy notables. However, Ferguson’s defiance of both the police and local and national Black political pacifiers set the stage for an intra-Black struggle that will likely determine the future of progressive politics in the United States.
