Federal Liberal Candidates

Oh Jan stop it.  The Liberals are not like the Conservatives.  The NDP has a couple of former Conservatives running under its banner, btw.  Does that mean that the NDP is like the Conservatives?  There tends to be some overlap between candidates & parties in politics.  You must know that by now after your years of being involved with it.  Look at the former Liberals in the NDP (Francoise Boivin, Tom Mulcair, etc.).  Does that mean the NDP is like the Liberals?  Yes, in some ways it is, but that's a topic for another day.

Btw, since you stopped into the LIberal candidate thread, I assume you are going to congratulate Justin Trudeau for recruiting more women & aboriginal candidates to the Liberal party than Michael Ignatieff did?  I think the Liberals now have more aboriginal candidates running in 2015 than the NDP does.  The latest announcement above by First Nation Chief Georjann Morriseau is only the latest.  There will be more diversity to come. Smile

Liberals in talks with Toronto Police Chief Bill Blair to run in upcoming federal election

I wonder what riding, since there are so few in Toronto without a nominee. Scarborough Southwest or Scarborough North seem the most obvious since Blair lives in Guildwood and both ridings have communities where law and order will be a hot topic.

Pot activist Jodie Emery says the Liberal Party of Canada is being dismissive of her nomination to run as the candidate in a Vancouver riding.

Emery claims her supporters have received emails from the Liberal Party saying they have no affiliation with her. She says it sends a discouraging signal to would-be supporters.

Jodie Emery: Liberal party dismissive of my nomination

"Please note that the Emerys have no role in the Liberal Party of Canada, are not affiliated with the Liberal Party of Canada and the party does not endorse their planned cross-Canada tour in any way," said an email from Louis Langlois on behalf of the Liberal Party to one of Emery's supporters.

snip

Although the party's leader Justin Trudeau has called for open nominations in every riding, she says that's just not true.

She said she understands why the Liberal Party might have a preferred candidate in some ridings, but they should be upfront about it.

yeah about that bogus open nomination meetings - Liberal promises - can't be trusted

Usually you can count on the Liberals to break their promises after they are elected. This is the first time they have decided to break their promises BEFORE they are elected.

Jodie Emery has been blocked by Trudeau.

Oh come now that can't be true, Trudeau promised open nominations, he made a big thing about it and Justin wouldn't lie would he?

I can't help but wonder what message this will send to pot activusts, both that Trudeau once again broke his word and over Judy's pot activism, I think its pretty clear he has no intentiin to go through with his promise on legalizing pot, especially given his voter record.

Scott, it doesn't say that Jodie has been 'blocked by Trudeau'.  It says her candidacy was not approved by the Green Light Committee.  And you also failed to mention that Jodie Emery says she is still voting Liberal and that Trudeau is the best bet to defeat Stephen Harper.

Brachina, this just means that Emery was considered a bit of a loose cannon as a candidate and that it would have been exploited by the Cons.  It does not mean that Justin is reversing his position on Pot legalization, so don't make things up.

Several NDP supporters on this board even admitted earlier on one of these threads that Emery was a problematic candidate.

Here is the statement:

-----

Dear friends,

After undergoing extensive tests, earlier this month I was diagnosed with nasopharyngeal cancer. Since learning of my diagnosis, I have been working with my physicians on the best course of treatment. I will be undergoing a period of aggressive treatment but I have been informed that my prognosis is excellent. I am confident that my cancer will be beaten. In the meantime it is my intention to continue to serve the residents of Scarborough-Agincourt. My office will remain open and my staff will continue to be able to help you with any issues you may have.

My treatment will require me to take some time away from my Parliamentary duties but my passion forhelping the people of Scarborough-Agincourt is not diminished. I am looking forward to returning to Parliament as I am able, so that I can continue to work to put your interests first.

Let me close by expressing my thanks to both the University Hospital Network and the Princess Margaret Hospital for the great care that they have provided me so far.

Sincerely

Arnold Chan

Member of Parliament for Scarborough-Agincourt

Chrétien cabinet minister Bob Nault to seek Liberal nomination in Kenora (was MP from 1988-2004).

---

Jan 22, 2015

The former MP for Kenora-Rainy River, from 1988-2004,  says he's getting back into politics.

Bob Nault announced Thursday he will seek the nomination for the Liberal Party of Canada in the Kenora riding for the next federal election.

The riding is currently held by Conservative MP and cabinet minister Greg Rickford.

Nault is the former Minister of Indian Affairs and Northern Development and was the MP for Kenora-Rainy River for over 16 years.

“The Liberal Party, under the leadership of Justin Trudeau, has an opportunity to create real change for the better both in the riding of Kenora and in Canada as a whole,” said Nault in a press release.

“Trudeau’s vision sees government as a positive force in the lives of its citizens, building infrastructure to create jobs, increase productivity, attract investment and improve our quality of life.”
