"So who didn't see this coming besides the morons in Washington DC?"

Bec De Corbin, March 15, 2011 - 8:11 am

"Yes, as do many people, I'd like to see the rebels win on their own accord (that's what I'm hoping for). If people in the international community want to show their support for the rebels by giving them weapons and supplies I'm good with that as well..."

NDPP quotes Murray Dobbin above: "One of the darkest and most shameful chapters in Western military intervention continues to play out in spades in Libya. But we hear nothing from the international choir, led here by Lloyd Axworthy, which sung the 'responsibility to protect' (R2P) hymn at the top of their lungs two years ago..."

Just a sec, - lets take a quick look at some stats here:

Number of fatalities in Libyan conflict (with R2P intervention): estimated at below 10,000

Number of fatlities in Syrian conflict (without R2P intervention): estimated at above 100,000

What too many folks refuse to recognize (on multiple sides of the political spectrum) is that R2P is all about the humanitarian obligation to save and protect lives.  Its not about the politics that precede or follow the conflict, - there are other international protocoles and processes at work (or not) for those issues. So perhaps its not so surprising that the proponents of R2P haven't apologised for the Libyan engagement.

Did the Libyan intervention over-reach its humanitarian mandate? Absolutely.  And NATO's pursuit of regime change in Libya has now rendered R2P practially impossible to invoke in other cases of humanitarian conflict and crisis. The great losers as a result are clearly the people of Syria who continue to die every day in the hundreds as the world looks on.

Hardly a reason to celebrate, I would have thought. But R2P critics have their very particular political axes to grind.  Indeed, their view of the world (in which the rights of states and politicians trump those of ordinary citizens) is much closer to that of NATO commanders than they probably care to admit.

Does R2P not posit that the rights of WESTERN states and politicians trump those of non-Western/Third World/Asian-African ?  The Ordinary Citizens are, as in the days of the White Man’s Burden, a pretext for “Do-gooders”, usually sincere (self-deluded) who need  to “Do-something” often to “gain salvation” which is so important to the Westerner. It is mildly racist and certainly paternalistic.  It neglects the complexity and history of other non-Western (Oriental) situations.

Mandela certainly was no fan of R2P and criticized the NATO bombing of Yugoslavia and Libya.

"Jus a sec", yourself.
Do you live in a fantasy  world of unicorns and pixies?

Your  attempt to compartmentalize "R2P" from its direct consequences both during and after the conflict, is bizarre;  akin to a doctor who destroys a disease by administering strychnine saying: "I was successful. Now it's the undertaker's problem."

R2P" intervention is as much  “about saving lives"  as Iraq was "about  WMD",  (which it now rivals as the favourite fig leaf for naked Western aggression).
I can't go into your un-sourced numbers of fatalities and their fantasy causes in detail, --but a couple of points:
Way back in October  2011:

Quote:
If the Libyan war was about saving lives, it was a catastrophic failure
Nato claimed it would protect civilians in Libya, but delivered far more killing. It's a warning to the Arab world and Africa
  Seumas Milne
The Guardian, Wednesday 26 October 2011 22.20 BST
....
What is now known, however, is that while the death toll in Libya when Nato intervened was perhaps around 1,000-2,000 (judging by UN estimates), eight months later it is probably more than ten times that figure. Estimates of the numbers of dead over the last eight months – as Nato leaders vetoed ceasefires and negotiations – range from 10,000 up to 50,000. The National Transitional Council puts the losses at 30,000 dead and 50,000 wounded....

http://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2011/oct/26/libya-war-saving-li...

Since that article this NATO-induced failed state, Libya,  has deteriorated further to  hell-hole of roving murderous factional militias,,  killings, torture and religion inspired atrocities of which there is endless documented proof. None of that interests the Responsible Humanitarian in you,...it's just "politics":

Quote:
Libyan attack: it should have been clear deposing Gaddafi was the easy bit
The west has once again started a fire it cannot extinguish, with the revolution it fanned in danger of degenerating into chaos....

Effective central control, meanwhile, is largely absent. And into this vacuum have stepped armed groups – whether politically, religiously or financially inspired matters little – all claiming sectional suzerainty over the multitude of fractured fiefdoms that was, until Nato barged in, a unified state....

http://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2012/sep/12/libyan-attack-fire-cannot-extinguish

The  "Humanitarian Interventionists" and their blind follerers  just say ..."Who should we  Protect next?"

Which brings us to Syria.
The "R2P" backers of NATO intervention in Syria are, of course, silent on what the ACTUAL attack and results would  be for the general population of Syria.
Even though the same NATO players have not  formallized a "Humanitarian Intervention" attack,  they have very much intervened by way of massive arms and logistiocs both directly and via their Middle East allies to the anti-Assad forces (most powerfully  carried  by Al Qaida-linked fighters). This is the reason the slaughter continues in Syria and why it is decending into savage anarchy like Libya.
Many revolutionaries who wanted freedom from the oppressive Assad regime are now re-thinking the outcome thanks to the armed “help” from the West, Israel and their Middle East  "humanitarians":

Quote:
To Syria’s Revolutionaries, Assad Isn’t Looking So Bad After All
With their revolution hijacked by Islamists, many Syrian rebels are rethinking their stance against the man they've been trying to overthrow
...
A lot of former activists are now saying to me, ‘When the choice is between Daish and Assad, I am going for Assad,’” says Randa Slim, a Syria expert at the Washington-based Middle East Institute, using the Syrian Arabic word for ISIS. To be sure, not all the rebel groups share the same ideology, but the most effective fighting groups, with their ranks filled by foreign jihadists, funded by private donors in the Gulf and backed by al-Qaeda, are gaining ground. As they grow, they are squeezing out the activists who dreamed of a Syria founded on democratic representation, freedom of religion and freedom of speech.

The most prominent western "R2P" justification for a more direct attack was  Obama's "red line"  warning on chemical weapons by Assad  (neatly combining both "R2P" and "WMD" hot buttons) made a year before the supposed attack by Assad.
Though the strategic rationality of such an attack by Assad has long been questioned, Seymour Hersh has just published the most extensive examination to date of the White House claims on responsibility:

Quote:
8 December 2013
Seymour M. Hersh
Whose Sarin?

Barack Obama did not tell the whole story this autumn when he tried to make the case that Bashar al-Assad was responsible for the chemical weapons attack near Damascus on 21 August. attack....

...Nice, I'm flattered (and a bit creeped out) you took the time to dig this up. Yes I posted that and I stand by it. Nowhere in that message thread do I say or agree the USA should have spent the billions of dollars or intervined on the scale they did in Libya.

The fact that they are voting for that type of law is disappointing but not surprising. But then again its their country and they can do what they want whit it. If you really think about it: if they are doing this they then I doubt they are under the control of the USA or NATO who would oppose such a move and is something you posted hundreds of articles here saying they were (in control).

for whatit´s worth, from Debka (they always throw out some bs in their messages, but do have close connections with military intelligence)...

Cairo’s Darnah operation is believed to be days away. It is scheduled to take place at the same time as another anti-terrorist operation, which El-Sisi is planning to launch on Egypt’s longest-running front against the Islamist threat in Sinai, 2,000 kilometers east of Darnah. There, Egyptian and ground forces will go into action against the ISIS affiliate’s hideouts.

He is also considering aerial bombardments of the Gaza Strip to target Hamas’ military arm whose active collaboration with the jihadis has been confirmed by intelligence.

Some of the militias which have divided Darnah, a town of app. 50,000, among themselves, have declared their territories provinces of Abu Bakr Al-Baghdadi’s Islamic Caliphate.
According to our military sources, Egyptian forces will be assigned to attack the town from the north after a beach landing. They plan to link up with allied Libyan militias commanded by the former Qaddafi regime general Khalifa Hifter, who will come from Benghazi to strike the town from the south. Khalif and his armed men have been pursuing a relentless war on the inroads made by al Qaeda in Libya, as well as the Muslim Brotherhood, with quiet backing from Cairo.
The London-based Arabic Alquds Alarabi, which is known for its solid sources in the Middle East, reported this week that Gen. Hafter had recently paid at least two secret visits to Cairo to collect the weapons he needs for his part in the Darnah offensive and coordination

Hifter is a longtime CIA asset. Gadaffi sent him packing back to his masters in Langley long ago. He was brought back into Libya by them during the 'liberation'.

NATO Knew Its Intervention In Libya Would Create Chaos and Aid Al-Qaeda

http://www.informationclearinghouse.info/article41267.htm

Pugliese revealed that 'A Canadian Intelligence report written in late 2009 described the anti-Gadhafi stronghold of eastern Libya, from which the uprising against Gaddafi erupted, 'as an epicenter of Islamist extremism.'

Gaddafi’s Daughter Ayesha: New Leader of Resistance Against NATO and Libyan TerroristsAyesha to her people: I will avenge my father, brothers, a husband and Libya!By Maja OrlicGlobal Research, February 02, 2016South Front 1 February 2016Region

 79   24  1    175ajsa-gadafi

She is back! The daughter of Muammar Gaddafi will lead the resistance against NATO and the other Libyan terrorists. Ayesha stated that she is now the leader of the resistance and she is about to create a new secret government.

Ayesha Gaddafi [pictured left] becomes the new leader of the resistance at a crucial moment for the country – on the eve of the new NATO intervention. As a Lieutenant General of the Libyan army she swore loyalty to order her legendary father and urged Libyans to wake up in order to win, to be successful and to “return the Jamahiriya government”.

Ayesha Gaddafi guarantees that in the next few months she will form a “secret government” of “famous Libyans,” who are loyal to Gaddafi and that will act as a mediator in Libya and abroad. Analyzing the current situation she criticized the former army because of “a crazy mix of anarchists” who decided to wage war on a principle “I fight for whoever pays me more.”

Gaddafi´s daughter accused them of using a green flag of Jamahiriya and recruiting their supporters, as well as strengthening tribal governments, under whose shadow they joined the alliance with the Tuareg and Toubou Islamists. She accused the Tuareg and Toubou tribes of separatism and conspiracy with the government in Tobruk.

Ayesha Gaddafi called on the soldiers of the Libyan armed forces to give her the oath as a Supreme Commander, in order to restore the state.

“My name gives me a duty and a right to be at the forefront of this battle.”, said a brave woman who during the war lost her husband and two children. Today she is ready to become a “symbol of the nation” and alongside a portrait of Gaddafi to become a “symbol of the mission to restore national unity.” Speaking of the Libyans as for her children, she compared herself to a mother who will fight for their children.

She also talked about about al-Qaeda terrorists, who overthrew her father Muammar Gaddafi in 2011. Ayesha Gaddafi prophetically said that their destruction and death have a breath of madness and that it will fall apart and disappear. She wrote that “We are ready for a deadly battle” in which the terrorists will face one nation. In conclusion, she promised to sign s new agreement.

According to rumors, the printed version of this call is secretly being distributed and shared in the main cities of Libya – Tripoli and Tobruk. And according to given information we can also expect her speech on local television soon.

US Prepares Troop Deployment To Libya Amid Fight For Oil Fields

http://www.wsws.org/en/articles/2016/05/21/liby-m21.html

"Five years after a US-NATO war shattered Libya, Washington is preparing to send troops into the oil-rich North African nation for a 'long-term mission', the Pentagon's trop uniformed commander said Thursday.

As in Iraq and Syria, Washington is justifying this new intervention in the name of combating a force that it itself spawned. Libya's ISIS fighters came from the Islamist militias that the CIA and other Islamist militias that the CIA and other Western intelligence agencies supported and armed in the bid to oust Gaddafi in 2011.

Many of them were then sent to Syria, along with large stockpiles of Libyan weapons that were shipped to that country as part of an operation run out of the secret CIA station in Benghazi..."

International Policy on Libya: Arm *Someone* and Hope For the Best

http://www.moonofalabama.org/2016/05/international-policy-on-libya-arm-s...

"The decision on Monday in Vienna to provide 'arms' to a Libyan government that exists in name only, the GNA, has taken the international community's stance from the sublime to the completely ridiculous.

It's a 'Potemkin Village' lie of epic proportions. But wait, the best I save till last. Their military component is an assortment of militias of varying shades of extremist mainly from Tripoli, Sabratha, Zuwaia and importantly Misrata.

Not forgetting in addition the forces that represent the coalition between the LIFG (read for them an Al Qaeda affiliate) which has aligned itself squarely with the Muslim Brotherhood, best described as the Sinn Fein political wing to IRA terrorists of the 70s.

So, as in Syria, the Americans are going to give 'arms' to the 'good' guys but not the 'bad' ones. Good luck with that one!"

More Messy Meddling in Libya

http://www.moonofalabama.org/2016/05/more-messy-meddling-in-libya.html

"So the ludicrous decision by the Americans, Brits and Italians in Vienna on Monday the 16th May to arm Islamist militias under 'Libya Dawn' which importantly include the Misratan militias, seems to be proceeding with some help from Western armies but no one is admitting it. [JTF2?]A question I have aked before but must ask again. Why is the international community persisting in this charade? This travesty is going to blow up literally in Western faces.America and Britain are blindsided by their love affair with the Muslim Brotherhood and their adherents in Libya's West and specifically in and around Tripoli. This error in judgment will cost the West and particularly the EU dearly in so many ways."

Sources in Libya, and among those who have fled to neighboring countries, as well as Europe, have noted that elements of the former Gaddafi government have been working closely with the Sisi government in Egypt. While it is difficult to confirm independently, such a move is entirely plausible considering the common jihadi enemy both face in Libya which shares a long, porous border with Egypt. Assuming that the collaboration is true, it presents yet another reason why the US and its proxies, to say nothing of the terror groups inside Libya, would greatly fear Saif’s freedom. With the backing of an assertive Egypt, the all-important tribal councils, and elements of the disparate factions on the ground, Saif would instantly become the single most powerful man in Libya.

And for those in the West, it is incumbent on everyone to vigorously and publicly defend Saif al-Islam Gaddafi, and to redouble efforts to back him. Saif represents a chance for Libya to be rebuilt, for the country to be pulled from the morass of chaos manufactured by the US and its NATO partners. Saif is the hope of the Libyan people who have suffered unspeakable horrors these last five years. Even those who have no love lost for Gaddafi understand the importance of reconstituting a single, united Libya under a single, united government. Only Saif al-Islam Gaddafi can do that now. And that’s why freedom for Saif might one day mean freedom for Libya.

Western intervention or escalation

The sentiment for many Libyans is that a Western military presence can only exacerbate existing tensions.  As the situation worsened, many Libyans realized the only way out would be to concentrate efforts in a common policy to root out terrorist forces coming from the outside and rallying behind one consensual leadership. The first proved popular; the second however more problematic, yet with the emergence of the Greens once again as a formidable force, many previously hostile to the old order, have been coming round, seeing it as the only credible alternative.

These attacks on Sirte will only slow down the process and derail an already fragile road map to national unity. But who benefits from a rudderless Libya?

David Cameron is blamed for the rise of ISIS as a damning report says his 'ill-conceived' war on Colonel Gaddafi 'made the world more dangerous'

David Cameron's 'ill-conceived' military intervention in Libya fuelled the migrant crisis and spurred the growth of ISIS, MPs warn today.

In a devastating verdict, the Commons foreign affairs committee savages the former prime minister's judgment in rushing to war in 2011, saying the intervention was based on 'erroneous assumptions'.

The cross-party committee accuses Mr Cameron of ignoring military chiefs and a lack of reliable intelligence to pursue an 'opportunistic policy of regime change' in Libya.

And it says he gave little thought to how Libya would fare following the removal of dictator Colonel Gaddafi, setting the scene for the country's descent into chaos.

It claims the bungled military action in Libya paved the way for a major new terror training base for ISIS fanatics.

'Various tribes, independent militias and ISIL took advantage of the absence of central government to seize control of portions of Libyan territory,' the report states.

'ISIL has used its presence in Libya to train terrorists.'

The committee says Mr Cameron's Libyan adventure 'was not informed by accurate intelligence', with ministers underestimating the threat that the country could become an Islamist stronghold.

....now let`s recall, the NDP`s unanimous endorsement of Canada`s invasion of Libya...where are the authoriities in Canada ready to challenge our disgraceful and criminal intervention.....

may I finalize with this rough quote from Muammar Gaddafi....*my dream before I die is to see the reforestation of Libya from one end to the other* so his 4 billion dollar deep acquifer irrigation project...one of the first infrastructures to be destroyed what with the help of Canada`s military craft....

Muammar Gaddafi, Another Majority World Martyr

"After the West's destructive neocolonial campaign of 2011, no one can take seriously Western political and intellectual leaders or the foreign news coverage of Western media of almost any variety.

This year's fifth anniversary of Muammar Gaddafi's murder is a reminder full of implicit rebuke for just about everyone involved in Libya's destruction..."

We will never forget that the destruction of Libya, including a vicious and intensive air-campaign, was led by a Canadian NATO general, Charles Bouchard, now CEO of Lockheed Martin Canada, and wildly cheerled by faux progressives and the NDP, many who now repeat their outrageous and disgusting collaboration with imperialism in support of 'regime change' and the dismemberment of Syria. Shame!

This straight out barbarism.

“The men on the pick-up were brought to a square, or parking lot, where a kind of slave trade was happening. There were locals – he described them as Arabs – buying sub-Saharan migrants,” said Livia Manante, an IOM officer based in Niger who helps people wanting to return home.

Trafficked people passing through Libya have previously reported violence, extortion and slave labour. But the new testimony from the International Organization for Migration suggests that the trade in human beings has become so normalised that people are being traded in public.
