Who me?

I've been saying since I first appeared here in 2009 that the Liberals & NDP should consider some type of co-operation, but it's hard to know what it should be.  The majority of members of both parties have been against it so far.  It's a complicated issue.  Harper knows that it's controversial and that's why he tries to exploit it and stir up fear about it.

Can't say I agree you've promoted co-operation since 2009 but can't disagree either. I'm willing to help defeat Harper, not so sure about your commitment.

Why not really scare Harper and vote NDP?

It's not that complicated, vote for Liberals is Harper-lite.

Meh, why do I bother?

Here's how Québec's sex education has been degraded since the Liberal government eliminated dedicated classes in 2005 - and an interesting perspective on how we can learn from what Ontario is doing:

Rokossovsky

There is no suggestion that the Ontario curriculum will be taught as part of a dedicated program. It will continue as part of the Health and Physical Education curriculum without structure, meaning that the institutional imperative will continue to be an ad-hoc approacth taken upon by individual teachers or under the direct instruction of adminstrators.

As I said, talk is cheap, so are curriculum guidlines.

But I am sure that educators will appreciate having an additional "strand" to mark on their report cards, in addition to Dance, Music and Drama, which are rarely taught by a specialists anymore, due to cutbacks. Last year the started to kill off specialists in math and science in the the K to 8 program as well, downloading the whole gamut to the home room teacher, who now is required to figure out how to juggle it all in their daily routine.

In Toronto, that also means doing it without any Educational Assistants in the mainstream K-8 program, since they fired all 300 EA's that did not support special ed, so that they could transfer that funding to fill out the staffing model for FDK -- more students, less staff.

Next year they will be "integrating" special ed students into that mainstream classes, and killing off the specialized support program for kids with special needs.

There is a lot that Quebec can learn about downloading more responsibilities onto front line staff by increasing curriculum requirements, while imposing an austerity funding model.

There's no evidence that the NDP can win a federal election, for one thing.

Even Jack Layton, despite getting over 30% of the vote Nationally, could only win one province.

Mulcair will have a tough time matching what Layton got, let alone surpassing it.

Ontario in particular is the big stumbling block.  It's a conservative province in many ways.  The NDP is not in a position to win Ontario, or win the 905 or the suburbs.  As Brad Lavigne said in Building the Orange Wave, to win government, you need to win the 905.

Well, the NDP is running a distant 3rd in Ontario under Mulcair.  Harper and the Conservatives know the NDP can't beat them, that's why they attack Trudeau & the Liberals.

Rokossovsky

There isn't any point in voting for the Liberals though, since they will not allow coalition government with the NDP, as Trudeau has said. So it's either the NDP or Harper, basically, whether its a Harper majority, or a Harper minority supported by the Liberals, it doesn't matter much.

Looks like one of the nuttier members of the CPC caucus has re-emerged this week.  Harper had been successful in keeping her quiet for a few years.

MP Cheryl Gallant demands that Justin Trudeau order Kathleen Wynne to withdraw the new sex-ed curriculum.

Gallant's bible banging constituents probably think this is a brilliant move.

Geez, hard to believe that this "debate" is still ongoing in Ontario.

In Québec, schools that refuse to teach sex education - or Darwin for that matter - aren't allowed to issue certificates of graduation. Kind of like schools that teach 2+2=Jesus. This has been solved for a decade now:

That was 2006.

We believe in freedom. Dinosaurs, homophobes, misogynists, are free to leave.

Work on the racist next.

I was going to say the same thing!

I suspect that Gallant will get a call from the PMO this weekend telling her to keep quiet.

Harper won't want the Federal Conservatives dragged into this mess.

One of the reasons the Federal CPC has been successful is because he's kept the social conservatives on a leash ever since losing the 2004 election.

I wonder how the Privatization Premier intends to ensure compliance with the curriculum without funding specialized programing to ensure proper implementation, as opposed to "ad hoc" improvisation by teachers and administrators?

Maybe another checkbox on a form. It's not like funding is tied to this, so I wouldn't really expect any extension of the auditing culture they've continued, nay, embraced from the previous overlords.

This is weird.  New article today says that Ex-CPC MP Dean Del Mastro has signed Ezra Levant's petition against the Sex Ed program.

You'd think Del Mastro would have more important matters to worry about since his sentencing date is coming up soon.

Del Mastro fighting new sex-ed curriculum

Former Sun TV News personality and conservative broadcaster Michael Coren (of people!) has been defending Wynne on Twitter.

He is directing his followers and anyone else complaining about sex-ed to a blog post by Pastor Kevin of Eganville Baptist Church — an evangelical Christian minister

Writes Edward Keenan of the Toronto Star

Michael Coren recently linked to a blog post by Pastor Kevin of Eganville Baptist Church — an evangelical Christian minister — point-by-point demolishes the objections that are circulating about it, noting in one place that “the curriculum actually encourages abstinence” and in another that a claim made by protesters about the curriculum is “not even close. This is simply fearmongering.”

Pastor Kevin makes the head-smackingly obvious observation that in school children learn things about the world they live in, and that as parents we teach them about our values, beliefs and interpretations about those things. “The world is full of people who don’t share our world view, but we do share this province with them,” he writes.

Oh surely more than a single checkbox. Several, with pre-formatted ministry approved notes. It is a whole strand after all. Possibly two.

I am almost 92 years of age. In my day you got your sex education wherever you could. I had wonderful parents but it was embarrassing to talk of sex with your children.

Rather than yelling and screaming at Kathleen Wynne who has said that the sex education stands, for those parents who object, there is an easy solution. Just withdraw you child from that part of the class and let them ignore what the other fortunate students are learning about life.

Good for the premier for standing up for something that is sorely needed by today’s school kids.

OOPS! Made a mistake. Meant 92 year old NDP stalwart Joy Taylor,

Brachina

I don't believe that parents should be allowed to take thier kids out of sex ed. anymore then they should be allowed to take them out of math, science, or English.  You don't take Sex Ed. you don't graduate.

I don't believe hicks and prides should dictate the what's in sex ed. and I don't believe just because some goofy reactionary figures out to breed, that they can treat thier children like property and dictate what they're children are allowed to see or hear or learn about. Childern's rights to a full and truthful education supercede that of parental rights.

Ontario Liberals condemn sex ed comments made by MP Cheryl Gallant

The Canadian Press

Mar 2 2015

TORONTO -- A Tory MP's suggestions that Ontario's updated sex-education curriculum was drafted by a man charged with child pornography and puts children at risk are "disgusting," the province's education minister said Monday.

Conservative MP Cheryl Gallant criticized the curriculum in Parliament last week, repeating claims that Benjamin Levin, a former deputy minister of education who is facing seven child pornography-related charges, may have had a hand in developing the document.

"The curriculum was written by someone charged with two counts of distribution of child pornography ... and arranging for a sexual offence against a child under 16," Gallant said last Thursday. "If withdrawal of this Liberal policy can prevent one child from being groomed for exploitation, it really must be withdrawn."

Education Minister Liz Sandals fired back on Monday.

"The claims she is making are absolutely outrageous and quite frankly disgusting," Sandals told reporters. "How could anybody be so badly informed about the real world?"
