Who is the Islamic State? (aka ISIS, aka ISIL)

Exactly. WalMart isn't on a campaign to destroy archaeological sites because of blasphemy. Their campaign is against unions and small business. This sacred site was just in the way.

It is that they had no recognition of and didn't care what it was they were destroying that I find more mind-boggling. I very specifically did not say that it was better or worse, only that I find it harder to understand.

Also mind-boggling that the public at large doesn't find both crimes equally shocking.

NDPP

How could it be otherwise in a settler-state?

6079_Smith_W

Not everyone thinks that way NDPP. I can't be quite so blase about it.

The relationship between Washington and ISIS: the evidence.

US and British aircraft carrying arms to ISIS shot down by Iraqi forces, proxy armies in Syria and the myth of the "moderate" rebels, sectarian violence as part of US plan to destabilize the region, US arab allies who fund ISIS, treatment of ISIS fighters in Israeli hospitals, American and Israeli "advisors" for ISIL, the "cosmetic war" by USA against ISIS, cynical and barbaric Western media reports gleefully reporting the killing of Syrians by ISIS while denying that Syria fights ISIS, and on and on and on....

The Ukrainian junta and ISIS - two peas in a pod.

Dudayev Battalion includes Chechens and other jihadists from the Caucauses. It also gives the terrorists access to Western targets.

Quote:

Aside from this solemn warrior ethic, another likely reason for ISIS support to Kiev is the access this gives the terrorists to Western targets. As Mamon puts it:

"Ukraine is now becoming an important stop-off point for the brothers, like Ruslan. In Ukraine, you can buy a passport and a new identity. For $15,000, a fighter receives a new name and a legal document attesting to Ukrainian citizenship. Ukraine doesn’t belong to the European Union, but it’s an easy pathway for immigration to the West.

Unbelievable stupidity by Western morons, supporting such idiocy.

Fascists and jihadists, brothers in arms. Funded by the West, natch.

So the green flag of jihad flies over the camps of the "private" armies in Banderistan. And "unnamed" countries providing arms.

Quote:
This is blowback with a vengeance: we are creating our own enemies, and giving them the weapons to harm us, even as we claim the need for universal surveillance in order to fight them. The mad scientists formulating US foreign policy are raising an army of Frankenstein monsters – who are sure to come after their deluded creators.

Extremists in ISIS 'Mossad spy' video are French citizens – reports

RT wrote:
The child executioner and adult militant featured in the chilling ISIS video purportedly showing the killing of a teenager they accuse of being an Israeli spy have been identified as French citizens, an official with ties to security agencies told AP.

Mr. Magoo

Okay, lemme add Frenchmen. And soon, probably, some Swiss citizen.

I'd be concerned if the American, British, Canadian, French, or Swiss governments were sending "advisors" or "foot soldiers" to the ISIL cause, but when all one needs to do to enlist is hop a flight to Turkey and take it from there, I don't see much significance in someone who's not from Syria or Iraq deciding that the Islamic Caliphate is the basket in which to put their eggs. This whole "killing imperialists, infidels (or just other Muslims who believe differently) for Allah" cause seems to have legs these days. Look for more of the same.

ikosmos ikosmos's picture

Thing is, there was no ISIS until the US and its NATO clients starting making war against Syria, outside of UN authority, using "moderate" Islamists. Similarily, there was no Al-Qaeda until the US and its NATO clients started making war against Afghanistan, etc. And there are also links between the US, Israel, and some NATO states and the origin of these fundamentalist fighters.

So, it's more "killing for the USA" than "killing for Allah". In fact, some say this much more directly than I do.

See, for example

Spy arrested in Turkey for helping 3 British schoolgirls join ISIS – Turkish foreign minister

The Turkish authorities haven't yet identified the country that the alleged spy comes from.

Quote:
A spy from an intelligence agency that is supporting the US-led coalition fighting Islamic State has been arrested in Turkey on suspicion of helping three British schoolgirls travel to Syria to join the jihadist group.

Turkish Foreign Minister Mehmet Cavusoglu did not disclose the nationality of the intelligence agent, but said he was not from the US or an EU country, or a citizen of the nation he is working for.

From Canada? Who knows. Supplemental: The Toronto Star notes allegations that the spy was a Canadian.

Turkey is itself the subject of allegations that it has been helping ISIS (e.g., putting their fight against Kurdish independence fighters ahead of the US-led "fight" against ISIS) , killing journalists that exposes this help to ISIS, leaving their borders open for ISIS to attack Syria, etc., etc., etc.

Mr. Magoo

Quote:
So, it's more "killing for the USA" than "killing for Allah".

Really?

If I ask you to picket my local WalMart, and you do, then it's certainly reasonable to suggest that you're doing it "for me".

If I ask you to stop picketing the WalMart, but you don't -- you just keep on picketing -- then it beggars belief to pretend that you're still doing it "for me".

What do you think about the (alleged) role of a Canadian spy assisting the girls in their recruitment to ISIS?

Do you think that's good use of taxpayer dollars?

If it is found to be true, should the Minister, or the regime, have to resign or do you think they should be allowed to keep doing that sort of thing?

If Canada sponsors terrorists, then what should be done about it?

If Harper prevails in the next election, does that mean the terrorists win?

Turkey captures suspected 'spy' for Canadian intelligence helping British girls join ISIS

Quote:
Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu said that an intelligence agent from a country that is a member of the anti-ISIS coalition had helped the three British girls join the group in Syria. While Foreign Ministry officials refused to comment on the nationality of the agent, security forces reached by Daily Sabah found the agent is suspected to be a spy working for Canada.

Or, if not "working for Canada" as the Ottawa regime may have already claimed, then "working" for an allied regime (USA, UK, etc.)

The Five Eyes at work, eh?

Quote:
Canada's office of Public Safety Minister Steven Blaney, the federal minister responsible for the Canadian intelligence agency, issued a brief statement. "We are aware of these reports," said Blaney's office. "We do not comment on operational matters of national security."

Give em a chance. Soon they'll start sounding like Jen Tsaki of the State Department.

Mr. Magoo

Quote:
What do you think about the (alleged) role of a Canadian spy assisting the girls in their recruitment to ISIS?

I guess for starters, I agree that it's (alleged).

And if it's true, I'd have to quarrel with it if only because we seem to also be spending money to PREVENT dumbass teens from jumping a flight to Turkey to be new brides of ISIL. We should at least choose one or the other, right?

And if it turns out that Harper ordered CSIS to order the spy to help people join ISIL then yes, he should certainly resign. Or, I suppose, wait it out until next election when the electorate resigns him. I really can't imagine that even Harper could help recruit for ISIL and still win a federal election.

ikosmos ikosmos's picture

The Globe and Mail has been quick to give a blank cheque to the Harper regime and the lead of their story is that the spy is "not" a Canadian. Big surprise there.

It should be mentioned that the crap between the UK and Turkey over the 3 young women recruited may very well mean that one spy agency is trying to embarrass another. Note the following

Mop and Pail wrote:
There has been tension between Turkey and Britain over who was to blame for the teenagers being able to sneak into Syria to join the extremist group, with Turkey accusing Britain of failing to notify authorities in time to prevent them from crossing the border. The girls had boarded a flight for Istanbul on Feb. 17.

Just to fill in a bit - Turkey's border has been extremely "porous" and there have been attacks by Turkish aircraft against Syria, truckloads of supplies to ISIS into Syria, journalists who exposed this traffic killed brutally, more interest by Turkey in harming Kurds than in fighting ISIS, etc., etc.. so they are by no means squeaky clean ...

Mop and Pail: Not Canadian Not Canadian Not Canadian. Did we say Not Canadian? Not Canadian!

Should we start a new thread or keep going here? I'm a little surprised by the lack of interest.

Russia Today has the same story - no Canadian identified so far.

RT: Spy arrested in Turkey for helping 3 British schoolgirls join ISIS – Turkish foreign minister

Wall Street Journal - behind subscription wall

The sh*t is really going to hit the fan if this is true.

ikosmos ikosmos's picture

That's tomorrow's front page for this English-language Turkish paper.

Just to be clear, it's quite common for intelligence agencies to hire nationals of a different country to work for them. In fact, when it comes to spying on the civilian population, the members of the Five Eyes (US, UK, Canada, NZ and Australia) have institutionalized this sort of practice.

Can we expect a sudden change in Canadian foreign policy towards Turkey? The story goes away and ... voila! A simmering matter of foreign policy is ... (after a suitable period of time elapses) suddenly resolved. We shall see. Canada suddenly decides to expel the entire staff of the Armenian Embassy? Who the hell knows.

I'm rather hoping the Turks just rub their noses in it. They have shown that they're tired of being a vassal for the US in NATO, weary of being strung along for years and years with BS promises of EU membership, having recently agreed to a new gas route for an important Russian pipeline, and seem to be moving towards greater involvement in SCO, etc. And, as mentioned, the UK which has been farting in the general direction of Turkey, blaming the latter for their own home grown ISIS recruits, deserves a blow to the side of the head. So a Canadian embarrassment seems perfect for those very clever Turks. So far, it doesn't seem quite enough to bring down the odious Harper regime. But let's be hopeful. In any case, it should be just enough to let the Brits know that Turkey can also emit smelly farts as well ...

By the way, the CBC used the "conspiracy theory" label to trivialize this story (already).

ISIS Terrorists: The US Creates them, Turkey Trains them, Qatar Finances them

Dr. Mohamed Elmasry wrote:
Many people do not know or have forgotten (it’s been kept very quiet) that the IS army was created four years ago by the US to topple the regime of Syrian dictator Bashir Al-Assad.

Few are also aware that Turkey, Syria’s northern neighbor, is ruled by a Muslim Brotherhood majority government. As a NATO member, Turkey has long provided recruitment, intelligence, training and armaments (including a daily flow of ammunition and spare parts) on behalf of US interests. Iraq, Lebanon and Jordan, which also border on Syria, did not offer these convenient services to the US.

Qatar, a tiny but wealthy Arab state with the largest naval American base in the region, was also very willing to provide generous financing.

ISIS is a proxy army funded, trained, armed, given logistical and medical aid by the Anglo-American empire and it's vassal states including Harper's Canada supported by the other major political parties in the Canadian Parliamnent. There is ample evidence of western aid to ISIS so that it need not be linked here again ad nauseam. ISIS attacks that which the plutocratic interests of the west want attacked. These same interests use ISIS as a foil for propagandising western populations to bring "manufactured consent" in line with those interests. An example is the Canadian version, which instead of having Canadian stooges beheaded by ISIS to raise public ire, crased mentally disturbed individuals as recent supposed converts to radical Islam, read as followers of ISIS, attacked and killed two military personnel sequentially, which was then used as the impetus for the introduction of the tyrannical legislation as showcased in Bill C-51. Canada has again sent her air force to act as adjunct to western plutocratic agenda under the ruse of attacking ISIS. This is much like the attack on Libya in which the CDN air force was said to be protecting civilians from supposed threats of mass murder and rape by govt. forces against rebels when in reality the rebels were again radical religious elements being used for regime change at the behest of the western plutocrats. Gadaffi was eventually captured and sodomised with a rifle bayonet before summary execution Recently allegations of a CSIS agent bringing teen age girls recruited in Britain for service with ISIS additionally supports the hypocrisy of the Canadian authorities and govt. calling for the imposition of Bill C-51 to combat such recruitment within Canada. Quite disgusting really! Canadians but especially Canadian leadership across all political parties will have to answer for these crimes when a reckoning eventually comes.

Israeli Army Admits Aiding Al-Quada in Syria

The Mid-East's "only democracy" has admitted that Israeli troops are aiding the Nusra Front, al-Qaeda's official Syrian affiliate.

Quote:
Speaking to Israeli occupation troops last week, a Wall Street Journal reporter on the ground in Mount Bental (part of the occupied Golan Heights) found that Israeli troops receive wounded al-Qaeda fighters, treat them in Israeli hospitals and send them back to continue fighting against the government in Syria.

The Nusra Front in August overran the Qunaitra crossing, the checkpoint between the Israeli-occupied and Syrian-controlled sectors of the Golan Heights. Israeli invaded that region of south-west Syria in 1967 and has illegally occupied most of the Golan Heights ever since.

Long before the terrorists occupied Syria the state terrorist, Israel, occupied Syria. It's worth "mentioning" seeing how it's been going on since 1967.

Quote:
"We don't ask who they are, we don't do any screening," the unnamed Israeli military official told the paper of the hospital treatment of al-Qaeda fighters. "Once the treatment is done, we take them back to the border [sic - ceasefire line] and they go on their way [in Syria]," he said.

An unnamed military official also said there is an "understanding" between Israeli forces and al-Qaeda fighters there and that "there is a familiarity of the [al-Qaeda] forces on the ground".

Popular conspiracy theories have it that al-Qaeda and the "Islamic State" (also known as ISIS or ISIL) are Israeli- and/or US-intelligence creations. While there's no evidence for that, it's certainly true that the US-UK invasion of Iraq in 2003, and its consciously sectarian occupation regime of the country thereafter, created the conditions in which al-Qaeda in Iraq (later known as ISIS) was formed and thrived. Veteran journalist Patrick Cockburn demonstrates this most convincingly in his essential new book The Rise of Islamic State, which I have previously lauded here.
