Meeting the real Tom Mulcair – the man who would be prime minister

Mulcair, Trudeau trade shots on coalition
Q Has Mulcair always favoured a coalition? A He did in 2008. But by 2012 he had changed his mind and spoke categorically against one.
Q Has Trudeau always been against a coalition? A His position also has changed. He was onside with Dion in 2008 when the Liberals were talking coalition with Layton. But now, as leader, Trudeau won't countenance it.
Q What might happen this year?
A If Harper wins a minority, the Liberals and NDP will come under pressure from party grassroots to defeat him in Parliament. If they do that, they would need to convince Gov. Gen. David Johnston (whose term has now been extended to 2017) that he should not call another election.
Q What would Canadians think?
A That's the question Harper will be asking himself. He was able to effectively portray the 2008 deal as an undemocratic plot involving Quebec separatists, and he successfully revived those fears in 2011. But in 2015, the Bloc appears to be on its death bed and wouldn't factor into a Liberal-NDP deal. And after a decade in power, Harper could be facing a stronger public groundswell for change - even if it includes a coalition.

Polls may force Trudeau, Mulcair into alliance
How deep is the mistrust and hostility between Tom Mulcair and Justin Trudeau?
It’s not just an idle thought plucked from the annals of the Canadian political soap opera.
It could determine the country’s government this autumn.
Voters may find it madness to be discussing a potential coalition government seven months before an expected election, but NDP Leader Mulcair has again pushed the concept to the forefront of political debate in this country.
Liberal Leader Trudeau won’t dance.
The two men have never discussed the matter.
They have never met in the same room, face-to-face, on any issue and their last and only direct communication appears to have been a congratulatory call from Mulcair when Trudeau won the Liberal leadership almost two years ago.
Their mutual mistrust came to the surface when Trudeau publicly ousted two caucus members over sexual harassment charges brought by unnamed NDP MPs last autumn, giving neither the party nor the NDP women a courtesy heads-up.
New Democrats accused Liberals of doing it again this week, leaking the final caucus expulsion of Massimo Pacetti and Scott Andrews to CTV News without any nod to the NDP MPs, a charge Liberals have denied.
In trying to prod Trudeau on the coalition question, Mulcair takes the bad blood back to 2008, the last coalition effort, one that predated the leadership of either man.
Mulcair was part of the NDP negotiating team and he has been reminding supporters he was prepared to install Stéphane Dion as prime minister to oust Harper.
This time, he is again trying to portray himself as the man with the loftier goal of ridding the country of Harper — any which way — while Trudeau is interested only in his own fortunes.

Agreed.

I got so many emails from the NDP asking me for 10 dollar before th March 31 deadline. I surrendered. I hope they will raise a good amount of money in the first quarter of 2015 with the recent good poll showing.
I'm glad the NDP has no Senators, never has had any Senators, and doesn't believe in the Senate.

Let's hear the facts before we go off on this.
Why are the Liberals ads promoting the NDP platform?

Speaking of spening scandals in the senate. Let's also audit hoc , satellite offices? Libs started posting their expenses online. NDP have not, what have the got to hide.

Now we know the real reason why Trudeau turfed his Senators like those 2 Liberal MPs who got turfed over sexual harassment allegations.
Someone probably tipped Trudeau off that there was going to be a wholesale investigation into the Senators' expenses.
What will it take to shut it down?
Senators loudly and anonymously defend their right to endless expenses, no questions asked
As it has grown (anonymously) louder, the complaint has evolved into a suggestion that maybe the auditor general and his staff simply do not understand the kind of work that a senator does — or worse, were trying to impose their own job description upon the members of the Upper House. “ didn’t have the first clue about parliamentary business and public life in general,” an unnamed Liberal senator told CP. “They are bean counters, and they work in a very narrow environment.”
----------------
I don’t want to suggest the auditor general’s people were indulging in a little quiet pushback. There’s no need. No amount of pre-emptive spinning is going to save the Senate’s reputation, if the report is anything like what it is expected to be. These are the people, remember, who sat in judgment on senators Mike Duffy, Patrick Brazeau and Pamela Wallin; who peremptorily waved away their suggestions that the “rules were unclear” or that “it had always been done this way” as the self-serving twaddle it was.
If it is shown that large numbers of them were essentially guilty of the same thing, well, we’ll have to invent a new word to describe that level of hypocrisy.

Good take the satellite office scandal to court, just like Duffy trial. NDP just wants to drag this issue until the election.
