Not sure who will fall on their sword, any ideas?
Which PC MPP will resign their seat for new leader Patrick Brown?
Not sure who will fall on their sword, any ideas?
Good question. Better question is this:
How the #@$! did Christine Elliott manage to blow that race? I thought she had it in the bag.
Well, they only have 28 to choose from.
I assume they will want to pick a pretty safe seat.
After losing to Kathleen Wynne in Don Valley West in 2007, John Tory then asked PC MPP Laurie Scott to step down in Haliburton-Kawartha Lakes-Brock and let him run there, but he lost there as well, which was embarrassing.
They don't want a repeat of that.
Maybe Tim Hudak will decide to quit? Does he want to stay on as a backbencher, or is he ready to go into the private sector?
Given the NDP's boost in strength in southern Ontario in the last provincial election, I wouldn't count on Hudak's seat being too safe if a by-election were to be held there (remember Niagara Falls!)
I'd be more willing to bet someone from one of the Simcoe ridings would be willing to step down.
Wherever Ayn-Rand-Harper-Toadie-Boy runs I hope the NDP runs against him vehemently. He was speaking quite smugly about taking a seat in the legislature in the next 3 years. Please, Ontario, prevent this from happening. If Liberals and NDP join together, we can do it! This guy makes Mike Harris look like Bob Rae!

You're forgetting that whenever a new Liberal or Conservative leader wants a seat in a Legislature or Parliament, the other Party usually doesn't run a candidate in the by-election.
More proof how much the Liberals and Conservatives are truly alike!

Uh, Not necessarily. When Ernie Eves sought back into the Legislature in 2002, he faced a stiff challenge from a then-unknown Liberal named Josh Matlow. John Tory had a freer ride to replace Ernie a few years later--but he still faced a full-slate opposition. And of course, when Tory bid *back* into the Legislature after losing in the 2007 general, he lost once again to a Liberal and thus endeth his leadership...

I don't think the NDP have ever chosen to not run a candidate as a gesture of goodwill to a new leader. I think the NDP have always thought that, regardless of the circumstances of an election, that it must be up to the people to decide. And so they've always fielded candidates, and are against any sort of gerrymandering of the vote whatsoever.
The 36-year-old Brown, who defeated deputy PC leader Christine Elliott to win the leadership Saturday, says he’ll resign as the Member of Parliament for Barrie, Ont., on Wednesday.
But Brown still isn’t saying when or where he would seek a seat in the Ontario legislature, and won’t say if he’s already in discussions with current Tory MPPs who may be willing to step aside for him.

Oh goody, I saw a comment/reaction to a story on CBC about how the election of the Notley NDP is likely to influence the coming federal election with particular reference to Alberta, and I have been dying for a place to reproduce it... and this looks like a golden opportunity:
Only New Democrats Defeat Conservatives. Liberals just replace them.
As to the actual content of this thread, there is no way any party leader should get a free run at a seat -- the nature of Stephen Harper's character became quite clear when he had a hissy fit ("I despise Bill Phipps") when the NDP ran Bill Phipps against him when he first took over the leadership Cons, I am sure it will be just as revealing in this case.

Of course Stephen Harper would hate Rev. Bill Phipps, the then head of The United Church of Canada, the largest religious group in Canada and the religion he was raised in. He is just that type of person. Bitter and individualistic.
Former Premier Danny Williams was interviewed on CBC Radio a few weeks ago and referred to Harper's "white hot rage" and his filthy, anger temper and foul mouth and stream of F-words that were directed at Williams by Harper during their argument over Newfoundland in 2008.
I posted a thread about it in the Canadian Politics forum.
Getting back to Patrick Brown, he has now resigned his seat in the House of Commons:

I think what that letter is complaining about is that if Brown had stepped down last year when he first started running for the PC leadership instead of waiting until many months later when he finally won, there might have been a by-election and an MP in place.
Now the riding will be vacant for 6 months or longer because it will be vacant until the election and then however long after the election it takes before the new Parliament is sworn in, so probably not until late 2015 or early 2016.
I don't think the NDP have ever chosen to not run a candidate as a gesture of goodwill to a new leader.
That is not necessarily out of goodwill, but perhaps a lack of provincial organization at the time to find a candidate?
Okay, maybe once in 1967.
