Rachel Notley says it hit her a week before election that she’d be premier

"I suddenly realize that this could happen," said Notley in an interview with The Canadian Press.

"My stomach gets very sore and suddenly I go, 'Oh my Lord. We have so much to do.'"

She remembers pacing in the empty suite. What to do? What to do? She dialled up her husband, Lou, and started talking.

The plan had been to run 18 hours a day in the last week of the campaign, then collapse in exhaustion on polling day.

At this rate, Notley feared, the day after the vote Canada would wake up to a frazzled hollow-eyed husk of a new Alberta leader nodding off at the podium.

"You've got to talk to your people," she remembers Lou telling her.

Notley phoned up her campaign director Gerry Scott and told him, "We need to pull out of a bunch of different events and start planning transition."

I like Rachel Notley already. She has her priorities right, and her feet are firmly planted on the ground.

Who needs to discuss stuff with right-wingers anyways.   Laughing

2.  not go to a Tim Horton's

Notley issues fiery stance on pipeline position in first NDP question period

Lashing back at critics who call the NDP job-killers, Premier Rachel Notley hotly defended her party’s position on pipelines during the bumpy question period that kicked off the new legislature session.

“I want to make two things perfectly clear,” the new premier told Wildrose energy critic Leela Aheer, one of 70 rookies in the new legislature.

“First of all, our position on the Keystone (pipeline) was that if we ship unprocessed bitumen to Texas, according to this government and to the American government, we will give tens of thousands of Alberta jobs to Texas — not to Albertans — and that’s not what Albertans want to see.”

Notley also pushed back at critics who attack the NDP for pressing for stringent environmental standards for energy development.

“Albertans have been trapped in a discussion where when you stand up for our air and our land and our water, you are accused of being a job killer, and what that does is that contributes to the very record which is actually inhibiting our ability to access markets,” she said.

The premier said she recognizes that pipelines are the safest way to transport oil and she will work with industry to improve the province’s environmental reputation to get them approved.

“Just to be clear, I’m very committed to ensuring that our energy industry is supported, and we understand that part of that means ensuring that they can get their product to market,” Notley said.

No is going to believe, nor should they, that this is not a conflict of interest. Arab should be given a political job within the executive/political appointee side of the party or the government, or CUPE should move him into a non-comms role.

oh bull shit, people need to look up what political 'conflict of interest' actually means before they start shooting off their mouths.

Perception counts as well though so it is good it has been addressed.

Now here's more music to the mayor's and Mulcair's ears too I'm sure

It's so good to see politicians trying to work together for the people.

What an amazing, marked difference I've seen in the past month!  I'm in my mid-40s and I've never seen such genuine social awareness from a Premier in my life.  Ms. Notley has only impressed and continues to set a realistic, logical path that is in the best interest of Albertans in general.

My one possible criticism could be the backtracking on rent controls, but I imagine that's due to the economic hiccup that's being felt through the province.  I only hope it's revisited a year or two from now.

NorthReport

Quite impressive, and the Angus Reid poll out today shows it.

Rachel Notley is the real deal, and I'm optimistic it will continue, and that Mulcair will benefit from her presence right across the country as we soon head into the federal election.

Yeah, what quizzical said. Lou Arab has to stop speaking publicly on behalf of a trade union... or in favour of a higher minimum wage... because he cohabits with the premier? What kind of crap is this?

Here's a comment on that idiotic Herald article:

Eric Cameron, communications consultant wrote:
As a close observer of the fortunes of Jim Prentice, who served briefly as my MLA until he quit in a huff on election night, I note that I have never seen an article in the Calgary Herald examining the work history of his spouse.

Who knows? A close analysis of Prentice's spouse might have revealed huge conflicts of interest - like maybe s/he had a bank account, or filled the family vehicle's tank with gas, etc.

here we've right a wing councillor and mayor who believe they've a right to decide whether they're in conflict or not. elected officials set the law you know not lawyers and the courts! it's become such an issue everyone in the community is getting educated on what constitutes a conflict. i guess it's one bonus out of the nonsense.

Alberta Premier Rachel Notley backs out of Western Premiers’ Conference over pipeline spat

Meet Alberta’s new opponent in court—Justin Trudeau’s B.C.–backing government

So, you thought the Trans Mountain pipeline expansion farce could not get any more ludicrous? Think again. This week, we are about to see just how crazy that crazy can get.

In a pique of petty irrationality, Alberta premier Rachel Notley has tweeted that she will be boycotting the western premiers conference—ostensibly because she can’t walk and chew gum at the same time.

Apparently, for Notley’s New Democrats the prospect of a national pharmacare program that the party has long fought for across Canada is not a sufficient cause to travel up North and temporarily set aside their vindictive pipeline war against B.C.

Alberta’s latest idiotic attempt to punish B.C. for its resistance to the TMX is about to take an unexpected turn.

One that is funnier than a Jason Kenney laughing bag and guaranteed to drive his divisive United Conservatives, Notley’s deep-oil socialist state, and Kinder Morgan’s shareholders all certifiably nuts.

This week, in Alberta’s Court of Queen’s Bench, British Columbia Attorney General David Eby will challenge the Notley government’s hilariously titled new Preserving Canada’s Economic Prosperity Act.

He might also apply for an injunction, to prevent Alberta from using that deeply cracked legal hammer to turn off the oil taps on B.C., in hope of sending British Columbians’ gas prices skyrocketing.

And guess who will soon be obliged to stand shoulder-to-shoulder in support of B.C. in that fight to have Alberta’s new law declared unconstitutional?

quote:

Why, it will be none other than the Trudeau government that will soon stand with B.C. as an intervenor in trying to strike down Alberta’s new trade terrorism act, that’s who.

Why?

For largely the same reasons as it is already planning to oppose B.C.’s proposed law to regulate the increased transportation of diluted bitumen, via the reference case now before the B.C. Court of Appeal. Which Trudeau refused to expedite by accepting B.C.’s offer to take it straight to the Supreme Court of Canada.

Because there is simply no way that Ottawa can sit by and allow either Alberta or B.C. to effectively supersede its exclusive constitutional authority for regulating interprovincial oil or other exports.

epaulo13

..one more quote from the above piece

quote:

Indigenous challenges should succeed

To be clear, I am not talking about the consolidated legal challenges to the NEB process now before the Federal Court of Appeal. Nor am I referring to the other constitutional challenges that have been or might yet be filed by aggrieved parties in fighting the TMX per se, First Nations especially.

Indeed, I expect that Ottawa will be in for a very rude awakening when those courts rule on the key questions relating to Aboriginal rights and title, specifically in regards to the legitimacy and adequacy of the federal government’s consultation and accommodation efforts. The Trudeau government will go down hard on that account, if there’s any justice in this world.

It is those legal challenges and the hard realities of changing economics that really most seriously threaten to rock Trudeau’s world on TMX. He can never fully indemnify Kinder Morgan from this uncertainty that he created—or from the political protests that are actually impeding construction and creating tangible project delays and investor uncertainty.

In any case, it seems impossible to quantify the political uncertainty and delay that Trudeau, Morneau, and Kinder Morgan have laid at Horgan’s feet, least of all when his B.C. government has done absolutely nothing to frustrate or delay the project’s permit approvals, about half of which the company has not even yet sought.
