17.08.2015 Author: Gordon Duff US, Turkey Ignore Russian Warning, Move into Syria Turkey

Turkey and the United States have jointly decided to move into Syria, daring Russia to respond.

The US and Turkey have dropped all references to protecting refugees, always a very hard to sell fantasy based on Turkey’s long history of persecuting minorities.

State Department spokesman, Mark Toner, yesterday started laying out the rules for the “buffer zone” the US and Turkey have decided they are carving out for Turkey.  It is claimed that this “zone” will be occupied by the Free Syrian Army and can only be used by forces sworn to overthrow the legal government in Damascus.

Russia 'Very Significant Threat' to US: Pentagon Chief

On July 9, Marine General Joseph Danford told lawmakers that his assessment was that Russia poised 'the greatest threat to our national security.' Carter said he agreed with the assessment."

As I read your post, NDPP, I'm staring at a book on my shelf called "The Myth of Soviet Military Supremacy", written by Tom Gervasi in 1987.

The premise of the book is that the US and its allies exaggerated the strength of the Soviet military in order to justify the arms race. William Colby, former Director of the CIA, is quoted on the cover as beeing in agreement with this thesis.

Some things never change, it seems.

'We have everything to lose and nothing to gain through a show-down with our former Eastern-bloc foes.'

It was an unusual and candid observation from a veteran Canadian officer about the increased tensions and worsening situation in Ukraine.

But Blondin's warning also reflects an increasing concern among some in the US and Europe about the possibility that the standoff in eastern Europe between Russia and the West could somehow end in war.

But with large numbers of military forces operating in such close proximity, anything could happen, they warn..."

My opinion...no, the USA is not going to invade Russia. Russia has nuclear weapons, and like it or not, they are the ultimate defensive weapon. What the USA is doing is just a little old-fashioned sabre rattling. It's more for local consumption than it is to try and scare Russia. Putin himself has already been quite clear about this. I think he just thinks it's funny.

At the same time, the USA should be careful. When you stick your hand in to muddy up the waters, something may just decide to bite you. Think  back to when the USA was facilitating the destruction of Yugoslavia. Russia did decide to take part, and it came damn near to getting out of hand. The NATO general on the ground was ordered to prevent Russia from landing paratroops in Pristina. He refused to do so, saying, "I didn't want to be the one who started the Third World War." In the case the crisis was averted, but believe me, the USA took note.

On the other hand, the basic objective of the USA is generally just to destroy local infrastructure. At that they have been quite successful. Iraq, Libya, Syria have all been 'bombed back to the stone age' by the  USA (creating the present refugee crisis) with only tiny losses by the USA. Mission accomplished!

ikosmos ikosmos's picture

Given the apoplectic outbursts coming from the bought-and-paid-for MSM over (long standing) Russian aid to Syria, the sabre-rattling is getting awfully close to troops of the Empire (and its NATO satellites) facing Russian trained troops. And of course, there are plenty of comment about NATO mercs actively involved in the attempt at ethnic cleansing in eastern Ukraine by the Banderistan regime.

I like what the Chinese leader, Xi Jinping, said recently in regard to the 70th anniversary of the crushing defeat of Japanese Militarism and fascism generally (an event that Western, NATO regimes shunned with true religious fervor) ...

Xi Jinping wrote:
After making a good start, we should ensure the cause achieves fruition.

One way to interpret Xi Jinping's remark is that the fight is not over, and fascism's sponsors today still need to be beaten to a pulp. I completely agree with this sentiment and wish they would hurry up and finish the job.

It wouldn't be nukes. Nukes can't differentiate  between civilians and sponsors of fascism. It will be a war of ideas, in which eventually fascism will  be crushed. We hope, right?

ikosmos ikosmos's picture

The role of the US and its NATO underlings in Ukraine is proof enough that fascism is still richly sponsored and funded in the West.  Good on the Chinese leader for recognizing that and calling a fascist a fascist. When the barking dog President Barak Obama howls from the rostrum of the UN that ebola, ISIS, and Russia (not in that order) are the key threats to peace today, everyone with a brain knows that the US Emperor has no clothes.

The Empire will need to be de-fanged, one way or another. The alternative, ultimately, is US-initiated global catastrophe.

Slumberjack

As a conventional deterrent, carrier killer missiles, Iksander systems and the like look quite promising.  We've been shown often enough from the US model of foreign policy that peace is put at risk when nations do not have the resources to properly defend themselves.  The US only attacks nations with less robust defensive capabilities, like any predator in nature.

ikosmos ikosmos's picture

I would agree, Slumberjack, generally. However, the neo-cons are like the proverbial "little men" that William Shirer wrote about in his preface to The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich. Shirer wrote that the end of the world might come when these little men push the button. And the neo-cons are such men (and women!) They really must be de-fanged. Or relieved of responsibilities. The latter seems unlikely as they now dominate foreign policy "debates" in the US regime - whether "liberal" Democrat or "conservative" Republican.

Who would want allies that are so easily reduced to quivering in their boots unless one parks a tank in their backyard to 'reassure' them?  Cheaper to toss them a security blanket instead and counsel them on the soothing qualities of thumb sucking.  If we can look past the childishness of having to reassure what the US is depicting with this line of propaganda as feckless eastern European dependants, what it really amounts to is spending Old Alliance tax dollars to reinforce the need for new Europe to fleece their own publics for the sake of everyone's MIC, which are largely interconnected.  For if they actually are in need of 'reassurance' from Uncle Peg Leg, there has to be some deep unattended psychological issues affecting the leadership of those countries.

There are way more commentators, especially in relation to the Yanqui debacle in Syria, who are expressing sober-minded concern about the barbaric US regime and its NATO quislings slouching towards global war over Syria.

The NATO regimes have - in gross violation of international law (what else is new you say?)- recently bombed Syrian military installations. It is a matter of time before Syria, armed with the latest S-300 and/or S-400 defence systems, and/or the Russian AF, shoots these NATO barbarians out of the sky.

Let's be crystal clear. Syria is a sovereign country, recognized by the appropriate international bodies, such as the United Nations, with the right to defend itself from these NATO attacks. The USA is not globocop, whatever their feverish and brain dead politicians have to say. The only country with the right to be attacking ISIS in the territory of Syria is the one country that has been invited by the legitimate authority there. That is Russia.
