Isn't that exactly the same story I just linked to?

If true, this is very disgusting and vile, up there with the "Liberals and NDP support child pornography" charge that Harper threw out in 2004.

Unionist

Yup, "disgusting and vile" pretty well sums it up. I would add "desperate".

Thank you for the timely reminder of this bloodthirsty warmongering interference in other people's affairs. Ever since Turmel whipped her caucus in favour of aggression against Libya, things there have worked out really really well.

Yes, the Post link was behind a paywall

David Young

The Liberals did the exact same thing in the 1980 election with Father Andy Hogan, a Priest who was the NDP M.P. for Cape Breton East-Richmond here in Nova Scotia.

They spread stories around the riding that Hogan had a drinking problem, which he didn't, but Dave Dingwall got elected by a few hundred votes that time.

Liberals never change...ever!

Debater

David Young, the NDP released a fake poll in Justin Trudeau's riding this year (with pages missing as Le Devoir caught them doing).

The NDP has also attacked Trudeau as no longer being a Quebecer because he moved his principal residence from Montreal to Ottawa to be closer to his young children.

Pretty low attack from the NDP, you'd agree?

As for this Turmel thing, I have no idea what's going on, but Turmel does not exactly have a lot of credibility based on her history.

This could mean she is in trouble and is making up things about the Liberals that aren't true.

quizzical

pages redacted make it fake?

what poor credibility we should believe you?

why in hell would the NDP got to Elections Canada with a phoney complaint? jeez give it a rest Liberals.

You're right. I'm sure there was a perfectly honest reason why they had to redact those pages. Trudeau is obviously going to lose the seat, there is no reason to suspect the findings in the slightest.

I can't think of any way that the NDP might gain by making a false complaint against the Liberals at this time. No reason at all. You must be right; there can be absolutely no doubt the liberals are guilty as charged.

There should be an investigation. If it turns out that the Liberal is lying about this then the solution would be to disqualify the Liberal from winning and if they did holding a byelection. This is not acceptable.

The NDP poll was not fake. Perhaps biased but not fake.

The attack on Trudeau for moving is not impressive but it cannot be compared to this if it is true.

Your suggestion that the Turmel story is Turmel doing it to herself is not credible (too risky) and rather partisan. Instead if you were less partisan you would just suggest we should have an investigation rather than come up with a twisted she-did-it-to-herself version.

So get out there and actually do the hard work of building a left alternative to the NDP before the next election.  Enough already with just saying the Dippers suck.  It may be true, but just repeating that over and over again achieves nothing and alienates the people you would need to win over.

But which one? The one actually accused is running in Pontiac, not Hull-Aylmer.

It doesn't matter where the candidate is. If he/ she says it about any candidate they may face consequences.

I'd never say Trudeau is not Québécois because he lives in Rockcliffe Park, but he has got a lot of criticism for being a tourist in his riding - remember that Papineau also had "the member from Montmartrie", Piette Pettigrew. Moreover, he could live in Québec on the Gatineau side and be every bit as close to Parliament and his young family.

I think that is a legitimate criticism; it isn't like falsely claiming that a person is dying, or has a drinking problem (and frankly, an Irish priest, what a fucking stereotype).

The evidence is so thin and old that I question the veracity of the accusations. It seems much like these lawsuits begun before the election but delayed until after it.

“As I said to her then, I’ll say again: this is not the way my campaign is run.”

He asked her to provide “specific information” so he could track down the campaign worker who allegedly made such statements. “‎No one from the Turmel campaign contacted me or my campaign since on this matter,” he noted.

Seems like the NDP saved it up to use as a tactic. I guess they knew it was a tempest in a teapot. Similar to Mulcair's repeated false accusation that Trudeau refused to work with the NDP as long as Mulcair is the leader.

Dirty politics indeed.

More absolute stinking Pondering bullshit.

1) the accusation that Trudeau would not work with the NDP as long as Mulcair was the NDP leader came FROM THE MEDIA not the NDP.

2) The reason this issue was raised by the Turmel campaign now -- is likely becuase it was just reported to them. (The fact these occurred going back a time does not mean they came to the attention of the party right away. As well, the first examples may have been seen as isolated.)

I am sure they would not have waited if they had the full scope of this earlier.

You Pondering are the Queen of smear. No respect for you due to this kind of crap.

Of course you are quite consistent with the victim-blaming theme.

In an email to the Ottawa Citizen, Fergus said Turmel’s campaign manager first raised concerns over the alleged comments last month.

So relying only on what the Liberal campaign said we declare the Turmel campaign to be lying. Really?

This does not sound like the type of rumour a campaign would start against itself in order to blame the other.

I also find it noteworthy that the NDP has gone to the trouble of filing a formal complaint. Why would they do so unless they had a reasonable case?

I don't think anyone has declared the Turmel campaign is lying. It has been suggested (even in the article itself) that the timing is suspicious.

The Turmel campaign may be lying. The LPC candidates may have made the statements. We don't know. We certainly can't take the NDP's claims at face value any more than we can take the LPC's denial.

Disclaimer: I'm not picking a side on this. It's all hearsay.

That being said, if the NDP made these claims and didn't file a formal complaint, then they would have no credibility. People would say "if these allegations are true, why haven't you filed a formal complaint?"

I could ask why they didn't file a formal complaint a month ago when they first heard about it, so we might have the results back before the election. I think the first half of that was actually asked in the article though.

Ciabatta2

Yeah, this idea of the NDP "saving stuff up" is baloney.  Parties don't do that.  Things go stale if you don't use them right away, you lose control of the narrative and the potential political gain by waiting.  This is coming out now because it is persisting from the Liberal camp.

Cody87

I read the article again. The reporter clearly has LPC bias. Doesn't change my opinon on the matter (which is that either party is capable of this, and the NDP should have acted sooner assuming they are telling the truth), but the reporter goes to great length to insinuate that the complainants all have connections to the NDP.

bekayne

Has this part of the act ever been used before anywhere in Canada?

The complaint letter outlines four specific instances during the campaign:

  • Oct. 8: during a public neighbourhood meeting, an assistant of Liberal candidate Greg Fergus, who is running against Turmel, said that the NDP incumbent was “extremely ill.”
  • Sept. 3: the Outaouais Liberal regional director told a member of the public that Turmel “was in such poor health…she was no longer able to walk.”
  • Aug. 13: volunteers for Fergus told people as they canvassed door to door that Turmel was “really sick.”
  • Sept. 11: another Liberal candidate, William Amos (Pontiac riding), told a member of the public that Turmel was “extremely ill.”

https://ca.news.yahoo.com/blogs/canada-politics/liberals-accused-of-spre...

Just applying common sense, Nicole Turmel is a high profile candidate who is surely doing a lot of appearances in and around the riding. I don't see how a rumour on her impending dealth could survive from August 13th to October 19th.

Elections Canada, which got the official letter of complaint on Monday, will have to decide whether to launch an investigation. It has no immediate comment on the matter.

I bet they will require the names of accusers and names of those accused.

Not that it's relevant, but it wasn't the NDP that reported this, it was the press that reported it, with the headline, Trudeau says he'd be more open to a coalition with NDP if Mulcair wasn't leader (I've linked this to a specific internet search of that exact headline to verify it -- you'll find oodles of articles on it, and here's a direct link to a G&M article).  Granted, it wasn't quite as definitive as the headline suggests (he answered "maybe, but maybe not", when asked if he'd be more open to a coalition with the NDP if Mulcair wasn't the leader -- which is still outta line and trite, IMO, especially since the goal is to get rid of Harper).

Liberals Tories same old stories of lies and dirty tricks

Quote:
I was attacked early on.

Then again, and again, and again. Here are the details:

...

The Conservative Party of Canada featured me in an online ad.

Problem is, the article they linked to clearly shows they are manipulating my words.

It's a complete misrepresentation. Oh heck, let's call it for what it is: a lie.

I knew that politics wasn't going to be fun and I was ready for it, but I didn't know the Cons would be stooping so low.

Next, they again attributed a quote to me, and again, it was for something I didn't say, type, or think at all.

It's about the oil sands.

This is a big deal in my riding as so many hard working people have lost their jobs in the oil patch lately. It's a serious concern and the Cons decided to just outright lie to scare people away from voting for me.

They use that ad in other ridings, too.

I must be very popular with the Conservative Party of Canada.

We weren't going to address these ads. The strategy for these attacks is that someone will get outraged and share it all over social media and the ads will get more life. If you don't respond, the lie stands and people assume that because you haven't addressed it, it must be true.

Win/win for lies.

But the last straw was when my wife Clarice was pulling out of the driveway on Thanksgiving morning.

Someone spray painted a very large vulgar image on our garage door and destroyed the light fixture.

That kind of personal attack made her afraid. She had our 4 year old and our 6 month old baby with her.

So I'm speaking.

I'm refuting.

This election should be about making sure people have jobs, that communities are strong, that we are all healthy and vital.

We should be bringing our community together, not ripping it apart.

I live here. I grew up here. I have talked to tens of thousands of people on the street and at their doors. I have heard the stories of struggle and I carry them with me.

We should be electing representatives who actually care for our communities above themselves.

I'm focused on one thing: being the best Member of Parliament our community has ever had. That transcends petty party politics. That should be the goal of every candidate.

And that's why I have been working hard night and day, every day, leaving nothing on the table. My community deserves no less. No other candidate has talked to as many people as I have.

And I will end this with a humble request.

Help ensure good ideas win an election - not lies and fear mongering.

...We are a threat to the established power and they are showing that they are afraid.

And that's all they have in the end. Fear.

We have Strength.

Let's show them how much!

And here's what the NDP wants from the Elections Canada investigation:

https://ca.news.yahoo.com/blogs/canada-politics/liberals-accused-of-spre...

The complaint filed with Elections Canada asks the accused to stop “making and/or propagating any further false or defamatory statements” in connection with Turmel’s health. It also demands an apology and public retraction concerning any proclamations made about her health.
