Next Federal NDP Leader

It likely depends on how bad things turn out tonight and how many loses the NDP takes tonight, but I think we all know someone was going to start a thread like this.

Personally I'd be sad to see Tom go, I really like and respect the man and he would have made a legendary Prime Minister, and it breaks my heart that will never see that day, but I've had my heart broken in politics before and likely will again.

To stay Tom likely needs to get 25% of the national numbers and dominate Quebec, even then his staying isn't certain.

I have no regrets in supporting him fir leader, anyone else and we'd be in single digits.

So in the Event that he doesn't who do you see replacing him?

I'm thinking Alexander Boulrice, if he keeps his seat, would likely make a good leader if he can dodge the ghosts of seperatism past.

Who ever it is will have to be able to appeal in Quebec which cuts down on the rest of Canada choices. Not to zero, but it eliminates alot of choices.

Peter Julian or Nathan Cullen perhaps.

Chow will be likely to win her seat back so that might be out.

Ciabatta2

Boulerice, Leslie (if her French is good, and if she actually survives.)  Julian is a snooze.  Cullen's rapprochement with the Liberals was pointless.  If, for some reason, the NDP gets wiped out in Québec, then Charlie Angus.  That guy was your next leader...until 2011 happened.

Pondering

Niki Ashton would be an inspired choice.

No offense, but I'll count as a strike against her, given your just posting in this thread to kick us while we're down.

Nathan Cullen wouldget my vote.

Aristotleded24

First let's see if it's a majority, because if it's a minority then the NDP makes itself irrelevant. Having said that, if Trudeau does come in first and Harper steps down, that will buy the NDP some time, but the party would have to move quickly. If it's a majority the party has a little more breathing room.

I have been talking about her as a potential leader for the last couple days.... She would be a good choice.

At this rate, will the NDP even have a seat in the HoC?

welder welder's picture

Whomever it will be,they will be younger...

Brachina

Possibly, I like Nikki, I guess I should hold Pondering against her. Still I don't know if we can sell Nikki in Quebec, I know its not far, but who ever we chose has to be able to win over and become highly respected in Quebec, possibly very quickly, that means either someone that we know can have massive charisma like Nathan Cullen or has good Charisma and comes from Quebec. And survives the night with thier Career in tact. That will severely limit our choices. Hell at this point I don't know if Nikki will keep her seat, she did lose to a Liberal once before.

The only two sure ones are Vancouver East and Nathan Cullens..

JeffWells

I'm pulling for Boulerice.

We need to shift left, hard (at least by Canadian measure), and I believe he could be the one to do it.

welder welder's picture

Pierre Ducasse ran in the '03 leadership race....Is he available?

Sean in Ottawa

The party members will not hold losses this time against the next leader. But they will want a generational change.

Niki speaks 5 languages.

Brachina

I agree, I'm leaning towards Alexanxer Boulrice myself, if he survives.

Sean in Ottawa

Megan Leslie will be back I assume in the next election.

welder welder's picture

Going to the Left is a good idea...The reason is pretty simple..It's because there is a shift of consciousness goig on about the last 35 years of the prevailing economic ethos..Bernie Sanders popularity is one point of light...And frankly, the Liberals aren't going to go to the Left at all as they are going to maintain the economic status quo..And probably for the next 4 years...And speaking truth to power about this is going to be very important...

Newfoundlander_...

Nathan Cullen is impressive but his big thing in the leadership race was cooperation with the Liberals. That doesn't make too much sense now.

true now but at the time it did.  I think he would be a great PM.

Pondering, I have no interest in who you think should lead the NDP.

Hunky_Monkey

Peter Julian.  Fluently biligual with a strong understanding of Quebec.  Hopefully, Quebec still holds a good number of MPs for us.

Peter Julian.

Cullen is Mulcair with less hair. They need to distinguish themselves from the Liberals by moving back left.

Brachina

A defeat I can handle, something like what happened to Andrea Horwath, but this is looking like it could be Adrian Dix territory.

The question is can Mulcair survive such a defeat. I'm not against him staying, he's been a good leader, until about Septermember where he listened to bad advise. At the very least Brad, McGrath, and co. are done, they're advise helped collaspe the house that Jack built.

If this had been another time period, but alot of people had expectations this time and dreams, so I don't know if Mulcair will stay, but if he does there will have to be massive changes and self reflection.

Yet Tom has lost all that Jack built.   The NDP could be back to a third party rump party after tomight.

I respect you're loyalty AC, but this is a major route, not a set back and I don't know if Tom is the right leader for the Bernie Sanders/Corbyn era.

WHY are you playing thsi silly game for the Liberals Buck up; remember what Jack said, "don't let them tell you it can't be done"! Come on! Buck up now!

So? My old man never folded as a New Dem, and neither will I. Screw the Libs! Screw the Cons! Ready? Aye! Ready!

It's just Atlantic Canada this point.  Liberals were always sky high here.  We'll see how the rest of the country votes.

Does not mean Tom is the best choice to rebuild.

JeffWells

Perhaps even more important than a new leader, we need to clean house at the top of the party. The advice Mulcair received was disastrous. The campaign was soft-lit smiles and latte steam, when Canadians wanted someone to channel their righteous anger. He was the right man for the job, and then they coached it right out of him and he flunked the job interview.

There was a scene in the move "Hearbreak Ridge", a truly lousy war picture. This Marine, "Profile", was gaspng for air and struggling to go on. His "Gunny" came over, and said something in his ear. The MARINE got up, and carried on. When asked by the villian in the movie, the Marjor, "what did you say to him", the Gunny replied, "don't give him the pleasure, Sir"! I relate to that. Don't give any of the LPC Sycophants here the pleasure. They have the NERVE to comment on this thread; they've NEVER voted NDP, and NEVER will! New Democrats don't stab their leaders in the back like the very old line parties. do. Don't give them the pleasure folks. Buck up! I MEAN IT DAMMIT!

This is true...I always got the "Angry Tom" drivel from my weak knee'd Liberal friends...

My response was that it was going to take an angry SOB to stand up for this country not some photogenic whelp...Then,"the braintrust" turned him in to touchy feely  suck....

Are you pretty sure that Bernie Sanders, or Jeremy Corbyn are the right leaders for the Bernie Sanders/Corbyn era?

More to the point, what about Alexis Tsipras?  Remember him?  And how he should teach us all?  That wasn't even a whole year ago.

What is WITH this obsession with charismatic individuals??

Brachina

You make a good point Hunky Monkey, but this is beyond sky high, its not a good start. But you are right, things could turn around in Quebec, but I won't get my hopes up, just to get them broken again.

Arthur Cramer Arthur Cramer's picture

There is no question all the old line NDP insiders need to go; this is FINALLY the chance to clean house. Get rid of the Blakies, get rid of Judy WL and her establishment crowd, and all the rest of those clowns in Manitoba. I'm sure there are more of them across the country. I have had plenty to do wtih them. They partonize you, get you to drop polls for them, give money to them, and then patronize you and ignore you. I dropped 38 polls for Rebecca Blakie; I warened her she'd lose without a ground game. She did. They think they know everything. This is a real oppotunity for the NDP to change and rejuvenate the party. There is no question the LPC wil do "the Paul Martin shuffle, again. If they do, as Glenn Ford said playing Admiral Ray Spruance, "we;ll bushwack them". Count on it. The Libs can't help themselves. There are plenty on here who already have said, the Libs will govern for 10 years. I say Great! SO HAPPY YOU THINK THAT. That's going to be your downfall. As a retired Naval Offier I am warning all you Libs, NEVER assume you can outgun your oppoent! Come on gang, if I was there, I'd be shouting, follow me. Let''s go get em'. Or as the Vandoos say  "Allons-y"!

Does not look like Tom will win his own seat.  30 votes in three polling stations ...

I have no idea who running for leadership would have made things better tonight but I do think that Niki Ashton is golden and although young, would have  probably had more resonance with young and indigenous voters. I never liked Mulcair and have never pretended to. I am sorry that he is being beatened badly because he performed adequately as Leader of the Opposition. But he never felt genunine or compassionate about issues that resonate with socialists or even left-leaning liberals.

Unionist

Niki Ashton should learn French.

Unionist

The smirking shithead Brad Lavigne is being interviewed on CBC right now. He must be flushed.

Hunky_Monkey

And here I was relieved when he came onto the campaign.  Bad night for us.  Looks like a Liberal majority coming.  Well, four years for Liberals to show their true colours once again.

Who the fuck amoung those that ran for the leadership could have done better?

There are enough key survivors to rebuild, we weren't locked out of Quebec, and hopefully Trudeau will choke on his own corruption.

I will say that who ever came up with those policies needs to resign and we need a plan on how to deal with the Niqba issue.

And not only do I think Tom needs to resign as leader, although he needs to stay on as an MP, but that he likely won't want to stay on after this 3 alarm disaster.

Let's not forget Tom was decided by Jack to carry on. Tom was crowned by Jack in his final days.

Brachina

I wonder if Brian Topp is secretly thinking, I told you guys so. I wonder if he'll run again. Maybe I was wrong and should have back him instead of Tom.

Mulcair has to resign as leader, from the official opposition that had been flirting with government, to a rump party and all our dreams in the trash again.

I believed Tom had the magic, guess I was wrong.
