Why We Can’t Support Police Unions

Last weekend, UAW Local 2865 became the first local to call for the expulsion of a police union from the AFL-CIO, insisting in a resolution that the federation kick out the International Union of Police Associations (IUPA). It was a laudable move that evinced a commitment to social movement unionism — other locals should follow suit.

The UAW local, which is comprised of 13,000 teaching assistants and other student workers on University of California campuses, specifically decried cop unions’ lobbying against oversight, support for politicians opposed to police accountability, and dogged defense of officers accused of abuse.

quote:

So what business do academic workers have passing resolutions against police officers? The better question, amid an upsurge against lethal policing, is how unions should relate to popular movements that it hasn’t directly birthed.

Social movement unionism recognizes that labor isn’t a sectional interest, and it shouldn’t behave like one. It should instead place itself at the center of struggles that improve the lives of workers and take on social injustice. The proper constituency of a union isn’t simply its membership, but the entire working class.

As their record since the emergence of the Black Lives Matter movement demonstrates, police unions aren’t institutionally equipped to be anything other than anathema to this cause.

After a grand jury exonerated the Staten Island police officer who choked Eric Garner to death, Patrick Lynch, the president of New York City’s largest police union, lauded the jury decision and pointed the finger at Garner himself. “Mr. Garner made a choice that day to resist arrest,” Lynch opined in December. When two police officers were tragically slain a couple weeks later, Lynch accused Mayor Bill de Blasio of fostering anti-cop enmity and thus having “blood on his hands.”

It is very apparent that despite civil rights laws the Constitution of the US is being enforced as it was originally enacted and amended. White people of property have the right to open carry arms into a potential riot situation and parade in front of the police.  The Black Panthers found out what happens to black peole who demand their constitutioal rights. The Oath Keepers on the other hand are afforded their full constitutional right to intimidate black people in tense situations.

A racist totalitarian nightmare. I pity the good people of Ferguson.

Quote:

A group of young black men were incorrectly arrested on suspicion of firearm possession during a protest in Ferguson, Missouri, as a group of white militiamen, armed with rifles and wearing body armour and camouflage, claimed they had been granted permission to walk through the protests by police officers.

Hundreds of protesters descended on West Florissant Avenue on Monday night as part of ongoing demonstrations to mark the one-year anniversary of the fatal police shooting of black teenager Michael Brown by a white police officer, an event that sparked a nationwide discussion about race and policing.

Sporadic scuffles between protesters and police occurred into the night on Monday and 22 arrests were made, following a day of civil disobedience protests around Ferguson and St Louis. County officials had declared a state of emergency in the area after a black 18-year-old was shot by officers on Sunday, after he allegedly opened fire on them during chaotic protests late in the evening.

On Monday night, a group of at least three black men who were standing by a car next to a hair salon on West Florissant Avenue were arrested after a phalanx of St Louis County police surged towards them, using pepper spray and batons. A spokesman for the police department told the Guardian by email on Tuesday that officers had received information “that the occupants or folks near that vehicle were possibly armed with handguns”.

But the spokesman later confirmed that none of those arrested during the swoop were in possession of any weapons.

The treatment of these suspects, who were wrestled to the ground and placed in plastic flexicuffs, came in seemingly stark contrast to a group of white militiamen, who arrived at the protest at around 1am, after the arrests occurred, carrying loaded M-15 rifles with several magazine cartridges strapped across their body armour.

The men belonged to a group named the Oath Keepers, a collective of former and current military servicemen and police officers who claim to defend the US constitution “against all enemies, foreign and domestic”. The group is described by the Southern Poverty Law Center as a “fiercely anti-government, militaristic group”.

Well, I hadn't seen that topic, and the "black rage" angle isn't really germane to the case I mentioned. Moreover, I will NOT join in a thread with a title using US spelling unless it is a direct quote.

From #BlackLivesMatter to Anti-Austerity: Women of Colour and the Politics of Solidarity

The experiences of women of colour in left-wing anti-austerity movements in Britain and the Black Lives Matter movements in the United States highlight the persistent problem of our erasure in these supposedly radical democratic spaces. Women of colour’s struggles to have our intersectional social justice claims taken seriously by ‘allies’ exposes the fragility, and in some cases, the impossibility, of building solidarity across race, class, gender, sexuality and other categories of difference in protest movements....

In Nationwide Student Revolt over Campus Racism, NY's Ithaca College is Latest School to Erupt

video report

In a week that began with a victorious revolt by African-American students at the University of Missouri and brought solidarity rallies to campuses around the country, a similar protest has erupted at Ithaca College in upstate New York. On Wednesday, thousands of faculty, students and staff staged a walkout to call for the resignation of President Tom Rochon.

If it is impossible to build solidarity across a multitude of boundaries relating to identity, but nonetheless, solidarity is recognized as an unavoidable factor in terms of formulating effective modes of confrontation and mitigation of the power relations surrounding us all, then it seems to me that the follow on to that is to ask if solidarity is possible in the absence of identifiers.  After all, is it not the case that identifiers associated with race, class, gender, sexuality, along with other categories that govern the way in which the given society has been instructed to relate to one another, through various means and methodologies to be sure, are in fact causes of the very same power relations people say they are against?  Is it possible, in the cause of human intersectionality, to suspend for a moment such identifiers which, in the main, are associated with intersectionalities as they've been set down before us?

Down with identity politics?

I tried to prepare a much longer response, re-phrased in different ways, but then I realized that babble itself has it's limitations as to what can be discussed.

The Backlash Turns Violent

“Tonight, white supremacists attacked the ‪#‎4thPrecinctShutDown‬ in an act of domestic terrorism.”

That was how Black Lives Matter Minneapolis described the shooting of five unarmed African-American protesters by a group of at least three men outside of a Minneapolis police station Monday evening.

Activists have been holding a running protest outside of the Minneapolis Police Department’s 4th Precinct since November 15, when twenty-four-year-old Jamar Clark was shot by police.

quote:

Some one thousand people turned out for yesterday’s march, including high school students who walked out of school. The mood was one of perseverance and determination, with protesters carrying banners and signs reading “Justice for Jamar,” “Black Lives Matter,” “We have nothing to lose but our chains,” and “This could be your city next.” Their chants included “Handcuffed? Don’t shoot,” “No justice, no peace. Prosecute the police,” and “Send those killer cops to jail.”

'I am demanding answers,' Baton Rouge police chief says after black man dies during altercation with officers

Quote:
Baton Rouge police chief Carl Dabadie Jr. said Wednesday that the black man fatally shot by police officers Tuesday was armed, but that there are still questions about what happened during the incident seen in a disturbing video posted online.

Apparently, both officers were wearing body cameras, both of which fell off and didn't work.

Sterling also died of multiple gunshot wounds to the chest and back.

He says he's demanding answers, but I'd like to know what questions he's asking.

I thought RDP made their view pretty clear, talking about a shooting attributed to "Muslims" in this post:
