Dr. Evil threatens Alberta

Quote:

“I mean no disrespect when I say this but here’s my offer: I’ll invest $1 million in Canadian energy companies if out of grace and for the absolute good of Canada, the premier of Alberta resigns,” O’Leary said.

This is kind of refreshing, actually. It is never going to happen, so it is kind of a joke. But it is a clown pretending to be a businessman doing out in the open what real businesses do all the time behind closed doors. Perhaps he is doing it because he wants some attention, but in a backhanded way, he is doing a progressive public service by showing what really happens.

And if there is any question of whether this is a joke, $1 million is what it costs most of our cities to clean up one dump of snow.

I am thinking this might not be in the correct forum... surely there is space in the media forum for a thread devoted to "ideas not yet ready for the Just for Laughs Festival".

Ha.

Yeah, I did kind of look. I have to say, I am beginning to wonder if he's some sort of arch-satirist like Andy Kaufman playing a long game. After all, he's no more a real rich guy than televangelists are real clergy. It's just the show.

On the other hand, nah... he's just a publicity hound.

I am not totally sure but I think he offered to invest 0.0000367% of the 2012 total investment. Now that should kick start Alberta's economy. If he had offered a billion in investment it would still be a drop in the bucket. The man is an idiot and he just proved he knows nothing about the tar sands business model.

Quote:

Oil sands investment was equal to $27.2 billion in 2012, the highest investment to date in oil sands history.

I'm just so thankful that we've overcome that Dutch Disease thing.

Is Kevin Oleary Canada's Donald Trump?

Just askin!

Aristotleded24

Does O'Leary realize that even if Notley steps down, that the NDP would just select a different leader from among their ranks and that the NDP would still be in control of the government?

Kevin O'Leary is one of the reason that I detest the CBC. The fact that they give this right wing Randite buffoon a platform for his stupidity is inexcusable for a public broadcster.

Maybe it's just the dollar figure, but this somehow reminds me of how Larry Flynt is always offering a million dollars to various women who make the news for some reason, to pose nude in Hustler.

But a whole million dollars?  A thousand thousand?

Maybe he needs to go on TV and show that money in hundreds all neatly packed into a briefcase.

"Go ahead, check them.  They're real."

With the difference that Larry Flynt has far more integrity, and did some good in the world, even after you factor in that crude magazine.

O'Leary? Dumb, evil clown; too dumb to even know what a joke that million bucks is. I settled that in my mind a year ago when I read the dust cover of his stupid  book about why one should marry for money.

And it is probably no coincidence that Dragon's Den hit the airwaves less than a year after Harper became PM.

I echo your sentiment.

Mr. Magoo

To be fair, he's a participant on a (pseudo?) reality TV show.

The CBC is endoring his politics or opinions in the same way that the Learning Channel endorsed Mama June.

Reality TV is the last hope that k00Ks and cranks have of being represented.  Do you really want to take that away from them?

The CBC was giving a platform to a buffoon since I help pay for it I expect better than that. Especially since his views are anti-government and pro -oligarchy.

Here is him applauding gross income inequality.

No, the CBC had him as a host on a political show, Lang & O'Leary Exchange.

Here's an oldie but a goody: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MAhHPIuTQ5k

NR is right, O'Lery is Canada's Tump and now he threatens all of Canada....

Quote:
Celebrity businessman and former Dragon’s Den panellist Kevin O’Leary is musing about a run in the Conservative Party leadership race, CBC reported Thursday.

“I thought at some point, someone is going to say to me, if you can be such a critic, why don’t you do better? Why don’t you try it?” CBC News quoted Mr. O’Leary as saying. “I thought to myself, hmmm, maybe I should.”

Mr. O’Leary also said he was inspired by the Donald Trump campaign in the U.S. Republican race, saying he thinks Mr. Trump is “smart as a fox.”

Good luck to him.

And not that I am a big fan of the show (though there are things about it I find informative) it is probably worth noting that one of his co-stars (and Albertan) Arlene Dickinson takes a similar dim view of his offer:

http://www.cbc.ca/beta/news/canada/calgary/dickinson-on-o-learys-notley-...

Worth listening right through, to hear her assessment of Rachel Notley's government.

Oh... it also ran on CBC. Funny that.

Mr. Magoo

Television -- including CBC television -- has an ongoing system of continual referendums known as "ratings".

If O'Leary (or Don Cherry, or anyone else) needs to be removed from our airwaves, all we have to do is not tune in.

josh

O'Leary is such an asshole. He's far too money obsessed to settle for a public office paycheck.

He is looking for a place at the trough not a public office paycheque. He is apprently not much of a real business man and his TV career has peeked and started to wane. So where does a two bit blowhard go to make money? He seems to be picking politics.
