Ucluelet local fights MSP premiums

Quote:
BC’s Medical Services Plan (MSP) premiums vary based on family size with singles paying roughly $75 a month and families of three or more paying about $150 a month, according to the provincial government’s website.

People earning under $30,000 annually pay smaller rates but anyone making $30,000 or more pays the same fee regardless of whether their salary is $30,000 or $300,000.

if BCers just stopped paying there'd be nothing the government could do!!!!!

Would that be your recommendation? Then we could get rid of our universal health care and adopt the US private system to save poor people money? Is that your plan?

What kind of stupid attack is this? BC is the only province with premiums for individuals. How would not paying that back door tax lead to a US system?

Currently BC collects more in MSP premiums than it does in corporate taxes.

kropotkin1951

These were the numbers before the latest increase in MSP premiums.

Quote:

In the 2014/15 B.C. budget, revenue from MSP premiums was expected to be $2.271 billion, whereas corporate tax revenue was estimated to be $2.348 billion. While the province does not have the fiscal resources to stop charging MSP premiums without replacing the revenues, there are progressive alternatives we should be exploring. We need look no further than provinces like Ontario and Quebec, where health premiums are paid in your annual income tax return, rather than as flat-rate monthly levies. This approach avoids the regressive effects of monthly premiums since rates rise with income to a maximum annual level. For example, in Ontario the current maximum annual rate is set at $900 for taxable incomes of $200,600 and higher, with those individuals earning less than $20,000 paying no premiums; in Quebec, the maximum annual contribution is $1,000 for taxable incomes over $150,000.

Ask quizzical. Attacks on the system come from all different directions but mainly from the Fraser institute disguised as something else. 150 bucks a month is about the last kind of taxation I'm going to be complaining about.

quizzical is not the one with the stupid comment it was you. I am glad you have no problem with regressive taxation it confirms where your politics are. Attacking a tax on poor people that is not used anywhere else in the country is not an attack on health care.

kropotkin sometimes i cringe at the sheer ignorance of the public in this.

how some seem to think getting rid of the premiums means we get rid of the health care system is beyond my comprehension. they don't seem to get no other provinces collect this.

150.00 per month for struggling families is groceries for a week. mybe food banks wouldn't be burdened so much?

the premiums don't even go into health care they go into general revenue. our health care money comes from the federal government.

the premiums are disguised as premiums but as you say it's just a fake grab by the BC Liberals in order to keep corporate taxes low.

..txs for this thread quizzical

well it's time we countered the BS myth if we stop paying MSP fees here in BC the health care system will be gone.

and anyone who thinks a hidden tax of 150.00 per month is not worth worrying about is a privileged white person.

Ontario too has a health care premium in its taxation of people.  Ontario's premium is also regressive.  On the surface it appears progressive, in that the payment goes up as salary levels are increased, but from a set number, rather than as a percentage of income.  So when the rate is calculated as a proportion of the income, those in the upper incomes are paying a far lower proportion of their incomes on this premium than are those in the lower incomes (with the exception of those at the very bottom, who do not have to pay the premium).  So in Ontario there's a similar issue to what was described as an issue in BC, where people pay the "same fee regardless of whether their salary is $30,000 or $300,000."  It's a regressive tax that hits lower incomes harder than higher incomes.

Well quizzical suggested BCers just stop paying it. If it is half or close to half of BC tax revenue, just not paying it would swiftly lead to crisis.

That's really interesting. In the states I think an average person can pay that monthly for a good plan. I see no reason for it to stop at 1000 a year for incomes over 150K.

I'm sure Pondering understands this issue very well but a word of caution to others. We must be vigilant at all times in understanding that the Fraser Institute is working full time to dismantle our univeral health care system. And it's quite likely that the socalled 'Liberal' government of B.C is totally in cahoots with them.

Always suspect, even in issues such as this, that the Fraser Institute vermit are involved behind the scenes, looking for a solution they can sell to the 'people' that will five them an opening.

yes, I'm paranoid about it.

quizzical

stopping msp premiums will not dismantle the sytem, no money collected  from the premiums is used for health care. its used for general revenue.

like this year it's probably going to be used to pay for the hydro mining corporations no longer have to pay.
