The New Politics Initiative (NPI) believed that the NDP was moving too close to the right, and was dangerously close to becoming another Liberal Party. It believed in uniting Canada's left to combat this. The NPI viewed Canada's left as being more than just the labour unions, but rather as appealing to a staunch left wing who believe in anti-globalization, feminism, gay rights, and environmentalism. The NPI attributed the poor showing of the NDP in recent years to having alienated its left-wing base by moving towards the centre, and wished to bring these activists into the NDP by adopting their views.
The NPI was founded in June 2001, and was soon joined by British Columbian Members of Parliament Libby Davies and Svend Robinson.

The federal NDP should embrace values contained in a dramatic plan for change — including a call to shift the country off fossil fuels — but the party must take ownership of this agenda through an internal process, according to a joint proposal developed ahead of the party's convention in oil-rich Alberta.
The idea is being floated in a letter by former MPs Libby Davies and Craig Scott, the head of a provincial riding association and filmmaker Avi Lewis as party supporters prepare to gather in Edmonton this weekend.
That's where discussion and debate is expected to take place surrounding issues including the so-called Leap Manifesto — a policy blueprint designed to be non-partisan that has a wide range of supporters, including actors, labour unions and environmentalists.
Nearly two dozen NDP riding associations are urging the party to embrace the manifesto's plan at the convention as rank-and-file members think about the future following October's disappointing election results.
Lewis, one of the key drivers behind the manifesto, said he's been working with Davies, Scott and others inside the NDP to help craft a procedural path for the ideas due to increased interest.

I think moving the party in the direction of the Leap Manifesto is a great idea. It's time for some bold, exciting thinking again. But, obviously, any movement in that direction would also require Mulcair to step down as leader.

If the NDP goes in the direction of the Leap Manifesto, they need a leader who wasn't any part of this past election. To go this direction, they need a clean break from the past with a new leader with no baggage. Which is why I have said all along the only person for this job is Joe Cressy.

The Leap Manifesto has a lot of great ideas, and I love the thought of transforming Canada into a completely green-powered country in a radical timeline, as they propose. It's the sort of striking, inspiring thinking that could grab people's attention and make the NDP relevant, staking out ground that no other party could ever occupy.
I like very much that Libby Davies is part of the movement (along with all those riding associations!) to get the party to embrace the LM plan.

Good to see. Even if people don't agree with all the prescriptions, the direction the effort is seeking to move the party is encouraging.

So you disagree with supporters of the Leap Maifesto? The NDP is currently at 11% in the polls. So if think the NDP is on the right path currently, ignore the chattering class & keep doing what you are doing. & stay at 11% in the polls.

Who the fuck is Joe Cressy I keep asking myself every time TT throws his name out. I had to look it up to find out he is a second tier Toronto politician with very little on his resume except young NDP back room operator. Just the sort of leader a Liberal could love.

So why is it okay for Justin Trudeau to run for party leader and run for PM, and not Joe Cressy?
