Alexandre Boulerice and Nathan Cullen are a couple of names being bandied about

Who else?

terrytowel

Again I'm a Joe Cressy supporter. I just tweeted to him that I hoped he runs of the leadership and that I'd support him.

R.E.Wood

Thanks for starting this thread, NR - was wondering who'd get it going :-) It's going to be very fascinating to see various names rise to the surface.

Obviously Niki Ashton would be a name to consider.

Avi Lewis would be a fascinating contender.

There will be many more...

Joe Cressy needs more experience. Wink

I don't know because that was the knock against Trudeau, and look how that turned out.

You're not even going to wait until Cressy gets Adam Giambrone's blessing?

terrytowel

People can always change their minds but both Nathan Cullen and Avi Lewis ruled themselves out for leadership. However they could always change their minds.

According to Dan Legar he just tweeted that Megan Leslie said she plans to spend at least a decade away from politics.

I think Joe has proven himself.

R.E.Wood

Avi Lewis said something along the lines of not being interested in running "at this moment in time"... a moment in time passes quickly. That was then. Now is different, of course. He can make a new choice now.

I don't know because that was the knock against Trudeau, and look how that turned out.

Trudeau had been elected twice as a Federal MP.

Cressy has only been a Municipal Councilor for a year.

Plus, Trudeau had other skills in the way of charisma, communication & organization that most younger leaders don't have.

terrytowel

No joke. Former NDP MP Ryan Cleary just said he would be open to running for leader "I got nothing better to do"

R.E.Wood

So many names to consider...

Jenny Kwan?

Erin Weir?

I have nothing against Cressy running if he wants to - I've seen him speak and he's very strong and compelling. I'm open to candidates from outside of federal office.

That is exactly why Cressy should run. I think he is the only person to go toe to toe with Trudeau in terms of charisma, communication & organization. He can galvanize young voters.

He might be thinking about it. He didn't respond to the tweet I sent him, asking if he was thinking about running. However he still sending out tweets, just one minutes ago, thanking people for supporting Tom.

That's super.

But what does Adam Giambrone say about him?  Surely you're not going to pretend that Giambrone's opinion isn't all-important, after spamming the board with it for about four straight weeks.

Exactly. Communication failure was key to why the NDP fell to third place. A strong communicator is what is needed.

I answered that question already. After we saw what happened with Trudeau that argument doesn't hold weight anymore.

Has Cleary re-joined the NDP again?

R.E.Wood

Apart from individual names, I'd like to see an LGBTQ candidate.

I'd like to see racial diversity in the candidates.

I'd like to see a strong number of female candidates.

ETA: And of course a variety of ages!

Here's a problem with a potential Joe Cressy candidacy:  I don't think he speaks French.

If Ruth Ellen Brosseau can learn french, so can he.

Brosseau has learned French because she lives in Québec and is immersed in it.

It would be challenging for most people to reach a sufficient level of fluency in time for a Leadership run.

(And even Brosseau isn't totally fluent yet and she's not running for Leader, which has a higher requirement than an ordinary MP).

terrytowel

We don't know for sure if he knows French or not. For all we know might know french.

Just ask Robert Chisholm.

Mulcair is once again repeating the mistake he made election nite and he needs to step down now and allow for an interim leader

Yes, to be lead by someone, other than for a brief period, who could not even get a majority of support at a convention would be rather incongruous.

I agree with you.

Another problem. No one outside of Toronto knows who the hell he is.

The NDP is split in two and organized labour needs to bow out as they have been getting the short end of the stick for some time now Let the Greens pay the bills from now on as the NDP no longer represent working people

Huh?

Mr. Magoo

When we're talking about someone as awesome and undefeatable as Cressy, what if Quebec just learns English?

And nobody knew Jack Layton outside of Toronto either and led the party to its greatest heights ever.

Mr. Magoo

Were there any other factors in Jack's success, other than the obvious advantage of being unknown?

terrytowel

That was Jack strength. That he was new, fresh and outside the party. He had no IOUs with anyone on the federal level. Posters are saying we needs someone who is new. But then when names are suggested (outside of the party) the knock is, yeah but nobody knows who he is.

Mr. Magoo

IMHO, being a wildly charismatic and persuasive people-person was his strength.

I'm sure lots of Toronto politicians are unknown outside of Toronto.  Maybe they would need more than just that.

And Joe Cressy has those same qualities if you see him in action.

btw I don't think either Naomi Klien or Avi Lewis know french (I may be wrong) yet it is not stopping babblers from saying they should run for leader,

Maybe because people know who they are.

I wonder if Joe Clark would be interested?

terrytowel

josh wrote:

Well then the party needs to decide if french a requirement or not. Because if french is a major requirement to run for leader then folks like Lewis, Klein and Cressy should be disqualified.

Which shrinks the talent pool even more.

A thought just went through my head that maybe Mulcair would cross the floor and run for the Conservative leadership! Stranger things have happened.

swallow swallow's picture

He'd be awesome as Con leader! There should totally be a write-in campaign.

kropotkin1951

Does anyone know what kind of rules they are using for it or is this convention going to decide? If the party wants renewal it has to be one member one vote.

The Con leadership race or the NDP leadership race?

The NDP is still putting a strong emphasis on French.

In fact, as many political commentators observed this afternoon, the NDP Leadership results were announced in French first.

Well if that is the case then the person should know english and french. Which means Avi Lewis and probably Cressy are out of the running.

When Jack ran for leadership he was a Professor at Ryerson who had published an excellent work on homelessness and had served as leader of the Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM, Fédération canadienne des municipalités). As well as the people who had heard of him as an academic many people in municipal politics from across the country knew Jack.

Methinks neither the original Joe Who nor the proposed new Joe Who would be the right choice for new leader.

Goodbye, Joe.  We hardly knew ye.

Will you be forced to campaign for Adam Giambrone, now?

He quite famously took French lessons and sent the bill to Toronto taxpayers.  And he knows a thing or two about leadership, eh?

Unionist

Hazen Argue.
