Why are we ignoring Gaza?

Surely the situation in the Gaza Strip is no better than when Harper was toadying to Bibi.

Are we ignoring Gaza?  Gaza could be another Kuwait with its access to the sea and location between Israel and Egypt.  Or become a province of Egypt, as in centuries past, while the West Bank becomes the State of Palestine welcoming the descendants of the 1948 displaced Arabs, next to the Jewish State of Israel (the ONLY state in the world with a Jewish majority)

But Gaza is Hamas, (crazy) ideologues that want one state where Jews would become a minority, like they were in Christian Europe for 1700 years.

You lost me at the vilification of Hamas.

I've been living in one all my life. It's crazy all right.

I love Crazy so I guess I'm a little biased.

You'll have a hard time convincing most Israeli Jews to become a minority in an all Palestine/Israel state.

There is no comparison with Canada.  Jewish Canadians have always accepted being less than 5%. But what if Christian Canadians including athiests of Christian heritage found themselves, one day, in a minority like 40% (more mosques than churches)?  Obviously it wouldn't bother secular Babblers.

The new Israeli president is proposing, writes Uri Avnery, a confederation between two states, one Jewish.  Why can't that minority of Jewish people worldwide that want to live (or be able to live) in one state where Jews are a majority, have that state.  Christians and Muslims have many.

I do not condone the actions of the Zionist expansionists since the UN General Assembly Partition of 1948.

They could try abandoning birth control and win the battle of the cradle. But more seriously, I personally don't believe it's any of our (Canadians') business how many states the people of the region finally decide upon. Everyone living there, Hamas and Netanyahu included, are entitled to push for their opinion, so long as they do so in accordance with the norms of international law. That ain't the case right now, unfortunately.

I have no problem with that. Fortunately, it's none of my business. If Israel can stop committing war crimes and crimes against humanity; if it can respect U.N. resolutions of many decades' standing; and if it can then justly and peacefully negotiate an arrangement where Jews happen to be a majority within some territory or other - that's up to them. But there's a lot of "buts". And by the way, I personally will never accept any "privilege" (such as instant citizenship) that such a state currently bestows upon Jews of the world. But that's up to me.

We are in agreement.

Wasn't the instant citizenship a relic of the very real drama of Displaced Persons, often stateless, after WW2? I actually do know people of my generation who (despite their qualms) accepted the instant citizenship because they were persecuted by the Argentinean dictatorship. Most subsequently returned to Argentina and are involved in the struggle for justice for Palestinians...

I think that Gaza is being "ignored" these days because it is just the usual oppression and discrimination, and it is overshadowed by the nearby conflict in Syria. But the women's boat and resumption of the boats to Gaza in general should reawaken awareness of Gaza.

No. It was a tenet of the modern (late 19th century) Zionist movement, the "ingathering of the exiles", predating WW2.

As for the drama of Displaced Persons - I'm not sure why you say they were "stateless". Who was "stateless" after the war? My parents lost everyone and everything, sole survivors of genocide, but they were still citizens of the same state as before. The Nazis were not able to deprive them of that small privilege. They then immigrated to Canada and acquired citizenship the same way as anyone else. No points for being Jews. Quite the contrary.

Gaza should be "ignored". I wish Israel and Egypt and their backers would ignore Gaza. The blockade should be ended, the regular incursions and massacres should stop. Everyone should leave the Gazans alone. The West Bank, Golan, and Jerusalem need to be freed from unlawful occupation. But Gaza is no longer occupied.

I guess it would be more German and Austrian Jews who'd have been stateless. Perhaps also those of Fascist allies with "racial laws". But there were definitely stateless people after the war, of different origins.

Yes, it would be great for Gazans if they could simply be left alone.

I appreciate the posts following mine.  Automatic citizenship for Jews is hard to accept even if Israel is the only state with a Jewish majority.  Jewish means religion and culture to me, not blood.  I could convert to Judaisme, "return" to Israel and work in the pro-Palestinian-state peace movement. Israel is like a "refuge" for the minority that think they need it.  No excuse for expansionist and no Palestinian State.

I don't think so - not even if you're "born" Jewish:

Quote:

Right of Aliyah

1. Every Jew has the right to come to this country as an oleh**.

Oleh's visa

2. (a) Aliyah shall be by oleh's visa.

(b) An oleh's visa shall be granted to every Jew who has expressed his desire to settle in Israel, unless the Minister of Immigration is satisfied that the applicant

(1) is engaged in an activity directed against the Jewish people; or
(2) is likely to endanger public health or the security of the State.

Of course, I'm sure that my desire to participate in the "pro-Palestinian-state peace movement" would be given a smiling stamp of approval under the above law.

So - NO. Jews don't have a right of "return" to Israel. Only the right Jews.

Israel Pounds Gaza With Fresh Air Strikes

We are ignoring Gaza because Zio power would have it so. Attention instead is directed towards Putin or the evil Assad and his war against US supported A/Q rebels in Aleppo. The pro-imperialist Western 'progressives' always go where they are wanted, never where they are needed.

A draft United Nations resolution calling for a team of UN experts to assess the environmental impact of Israeli military operations in the Gaza Strip in November 2012 and July-August 2014 was effectively “buried” by the United States, Canada and Israel on Saturday.

The final round of government meetings at the United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA) in the last week of May resulted in the passing of 25 resolutions, including a landmark resolution calling for states to implement all international law on protecting the environment during war in national legislation.

However, the draft resolution on Gaza calling for a UN field assessment of environmental damage caused by war 2012 and 2014 was aborted amidst a storm of controversy.
