"EU", I believe it is called now.

But apart from that, yeah, I don't see Brexit going through. Most of the people promoting it, and certainly the most visible, are from the far-right of the political spectrum(I gather Trump has just sent over a high-five), and I just don't see their anti-immigrant, anti-"eurocrat" rhetoric capturing the middle ground of public opinion.

Yes, a lot of people quite rightly disagree with the bureaucratic and non-democratic structure of the EU, but a Brexit would also mean a new Scottish referendum, and is now associated with the intolerant.

In the meantime, Mayor Khan's first official engagement was attendance at the Yom Hashoah commemoration: http://www.thejc.com/news/uk-news/157902/sadiq-khan-pledges-zero-toleran...

Note that while the mayor said was fine, the Israeli ambassador chimed in with the usual bollocks about criticism of Israel being antisemitism and somehow equivalent to the horrors 70 years ago... Jews in London, like Muslims or anyone else in London, are not "stateless"...

I like Khan's statement:

Quote:
And in the light of the suspension of more than a dozen Labour MPs, councillors and activists over allegations of antisemitism, he stressed "the need to understand, not just as the Labour Party but as a civilised society, that racism is racism, and there can't be any hierarchy when it comes to racism. It's really important that message is sent loud and clear from City Hall."

A good message for many in the country, the Labour party, and the crowd at that event, I think.

It looks like Scottish independence will be greatly strengthened tonight if the SNP win almost all of Scotland's seats. And if the Conservatives have a referendum on being in the EU, Scotland will likely have another referendum on staying in the UK.

I think it's only a matter of time before Scotland has another referendum that will see it leave the UK. I think Cameron is going to go down as one of the UK's worst PM's.

John McDonnell fails to rule out calls for Tony Blair to be tried for war crimes

Labour's John McDonnell has refused to rule out calling for Tony Blair to be tried for war crimes over Iraq.

The shadow chancellor did not disagree with the suggestion that he and Jeremy Corbyn are going to "crucify" the former leader for "being a war criminal" when the Chilcot report comes out on Wednesday.

A number of MPs are expected to try to use an ancient law to try to impeach the former prime minister once the findings of the long-awaited inquiry into the Iraq war are published.

"I have never said that - what I have said all the way through in the last few weeks is we've got to wait for Chilcot," he told Dermot Murnaghan on Sky News.

"What I have been saying - actually it's more important that we look at the processes that led up to the Iraq war, rather than any individual role or responsibility, because I want to make sure that we put the processes in place so that we never ever make such a grave mistake again, because I think it was."

When asked if he thinks Mr Blair may have questions to answer in the international court, he said: "I want to see the Chilcot report, nobody can comment on this until we see the report itself and I'm hoping that the report will be thorough and for me the importance is not Tony Blair or any individuals - it's about the processes so we never ever get into this tragic, tragic mess again with such loss of life."

Former Scottish First Minister Alex Salmond said there "has to be a judicial or political reckoning" for Blair's role in the Iraq conflict.

"He seemed puzzled as to why Jeremy Corbyn thinks he is a war criminal, why people don't like him," he told Sky News.

"The reason is 179 British war dead, 150,000 immediate dead from the Iraq conflict, the Middle East in flames, the world faced with an existential crisis on terrorism - these are just some of the reasons perhaps he should understand why people don't hold him in the highest regard."

He added: "We are waiting to see Chilcot producing the evidence, which we believe is there, which will allow action to be taken."

Quoting Robin Butler in the above posted article 'Chilcot Report Legality' in the Guardian:

Quote:
...“In fact, the joint intelligence committee said to him the intelligence was sporadic and patchy. He said to the House of Commons that it was extensive, detailed and authoritative. That was where the inconsistency lay. I don’t call that a lie, he may himself have thought it was extensive, detailed and authoritative, but it wasn’t.”

Butler said he did not think Blair should have resigned when it was revealed that Saddam Hussein did not possess weapons of mass destruction, “because he really did believe what he was doing was right”.

This is the most disingenuous statement. The intelligence wasn't 'sporadic and patchy', it was manufactured out of whole cloth. Remember the Niger yellowcake documents? The ones that were obvious forgeries. Who, one might ask, would go to the trouble of creating these forged documents. It could only be someone who needed them to shore up their case for the invasion of Iraq. That leaves a pretty small group. A group of two, in fact, the UK and the USA.

Remember Ahmed Chalabi, serial liar and recipient of USA funding for his Iraqi National Congress? That was where a massive pile of bullshit came from. 'Sporadic and patchy' my ass. It was lies a child could see through.

Defeated Labour rebels admit 'it's finished' as Jeremy Corbyn refuses to resign as leader

Labour rebels are in retreat after admitting that Jeremy Corbyn cannot be removed and would "win easily" if a leadership election is triggered.

One senior Labour MP said: "It's finished" as it emerged that lengthy talks between union bosses and Tom Watson, the party's deputy leader, had failed to find a solution to the deadlock.

MPs have now pinned their hopes on a challenge by Angela Eagle, despite many believing that she will not beat Mr Corbyn because of his support among members.

It follows weeks of stalemate between the Labour leader's office and MPs who want to see Mr Corbyn step down without having to trigger a leadership campaign.

One senior MP told The Telegraph: "It's finished. He will win easily in a second contest if he is on the ballot, it's everything we wanted to avoid."

They added: "He is losing support of the membership by the day, there is no doubt about that, but they just sign up new members to replace them. He is Teflon in that sense."

Another Labour source admitted that Mr Corbyn has "dug his heels in" and "isn't going anywhere", adding: "It's grim."

Jeremy Corbyn launches plea for his MPs to 'come together' amid Labour crisisPlay!01:59

MPs had mounted a campaign to remove the Labour leader after he sacked Hilary Benn as shadow foreign secretary following the EU referendum.

In the following week almost every shadow minister in Mr Corbyn's top team resigned and a vote of no confidence in the leader won the support of over 80 per cent of MPs who voted.

However Mr Corbyn and his allies, including John McDonnell, the shadow chancellor, have refused to back down and allow a new leader to be appointed, citing the mandate he won from Labour voters in September.

McCluskey: "coup" against Corbyn has failedPlay!01:17

A Labour MP told The Telegraph: "There are more talks planned, but when one side's red line is that Jeremy stays in post and the other side says he has to go, it is impossible to find a compromise. It's done.

"It's no good. It's possible that the PLP would consider some kind of executive role for Jeremy if he were to stand aside as leader but his team just won't consider that option, they know where the power lies."

However another said there was still hope that Ms Eagle could beat Mr Corbyn in a campaign by motivating a "groundswell" of support  following the Brexit vote.

They said: "Jeremy and his team don't care about the public, they don't care about opposing this Government. Angela is the best hope now and people are prepared for that fight."

Re: post #333

That's good to read.  Of course, if Eagle does put in a challenge, then the question will be whether the same criteria (one part being getting a certain amount of MP signatures) would also apply to Corbyn or not.  I've read conflicting views on this in the press.  At this point I don't think Eagle will go through with the challenge, though, since an impending election doesn't look to be on the horizon.  But it will be interesting to see what happens.  Right now the shadow cabinet is down to the bare bones and mostly stacked by newcomers.
