When the rally began, the first speakers were a crew from Super InTent City. They focused on the rally’s first demand against the criminalization of poverty and breaking up the tent city. The now-tell-tale appearance of Super InTent City leaders is that they carry hatchets on their belts and a smile on their faces. Amidst their demands for homes, land, and for an end to the criminalization of poverty, they also reflect the deep sense of community togetherness that undergirds the camp. Ana, one of the leaders, took the mic and said, referencing the Outkast song, “We are your neighbours, lend us some sugar!” Her appeal for kindness pointed to the poor-bashing ideas that lay underneath the anti-poor laws of the Canadian government. Ana called for our movements to face these problems all together.

After the speakers, led by a banner reading, “Hands off Super InTent City,” the crowd of nearly fifty marched out of the square, up the driveway towards the hotel where the ministers met, and crashed into three bike cops blockading the main doors of the hotel. There, logjammed with the cops, they chanted “Seventy-seven thousand homes, Build them now!”; “Rich Coleman don’t you know tent city will not go,” and; “Christy’s cuts are class war! Coleman’s cops are class war.” The marchers demanded entry, and then tried to negotiate for a delegation of three to be admitted to deliver our demands. The cops refused, then finally took a request in to the ministers, who also refused. After about half an hour of pushing and shoving against the line of police, the rally ended with the Women’s Warrior Song led by Chrissy and Donna from Super InTent City, who carried a smudge bowl throughout the rally. And, proudly, the marchers paraded back to Super InTent City, taking the street and chanting all the way.

it's not the way it was covered on BC news.

Martin Brown's article in the June 30 edition of the Georgia Straight clearly explains why the BC NDP is no match for the BC Liberals and why John Horgan will be decimated by Christy Clark in next year's BC election

Now we won't have to wait long for the brilliant political analysts here to once again accuse me of being a BC Liberal

this is an issue.

Several reports of travel companies and scalpers snatching up prime lots in provincial parks and reselling them for a profit has caught the attention of Oak Bay-Gordon Head MLA and B.C. Green Party Leader Andrew Weaver.

He said the practice of reselling campsite reservations to tourists has caused some popular campgrounds to sell out in a matter of minutes.

Activists take control of COPE, filling most executive positions

Self-identified activists with a group called the Left Front won most of the executive positions for the Coalition of Progressive Electors on Sunday, sending a message to voters that the Vancouver civic party is unlikely to moderate its left-leaning course anytime soon.

quote:

Also ratified on Sunday were COPE’s new equity representatives — the heads of party caucuses of traditionally marginalized groups. They were Rosanne Gervais, for the aboriginal caucus, Stephen Lytton for the disability caucus, John Yano for the LGBPQ (lesbian, gay, bi, and pansexual) caucus, Imtiaz Popat for the racialized caucus and Jamie Lee Hamilton for the transgender caucus representative.

On the policy front, the members adopted a 2014 election platform that calls for the party to immediately declare a “state of emergency” on housing if it should win power at Vancouver City Hall.

This is a one off not a provincial fix. They are talking about changing the Vancouver Charter legislation not the Municipal Act. WIth these liars it's good to keep your eye on the ball because they love obfuscation.

Hot summer for Clark as political battles come to a boil

Summertime is usually a slow time in B.C. politics, with MLAs hitting community barbecue circuits and preparing for the political battles to come in the fall.

But this summer shapes up as a sizzling one for Premier Christy Clark and her Liberals, as they suddenly find themselves embroiled in multiple showdowns with other levels of government.

Metro Vancouver’s over-heated real-estate market. A budget battle with the Vancouver school board. The controversial $3.5-billion, 10-lane “super bridge” to replace the Massey Tunnel. Clark’s promised LNG miracle.

Temperatures are rising on all these red-hot issues. And the heat from an approaching 2017 election will push them to the boiling point....

Quote:

This year’s homeless count in Vancouver was the highest in a decade, making a mockery of Mayor Gregor Robertson’s now almost forgotten pledge to eliminate homelessness in the city by 2015. Just this weekend new direct action housing protests took place in Vancouver, Burnaby and Abbotsford. In Victoria, there’s a long-running “tent city” housing squat demanding more affordable and social housing.

Tens of thousands of families live one paycheque away from joining the ranks without housing. A recently released study by Vancity highlighted how renting is no longer even an affordable alternative to buying, noting, “While weekly median wages grew by 6.6% in B.C. between 2011 and 2015, rents increased at a rate closer to double that – up by 11.4% on average in Metro Vancouver.” Or, in other words, the rent is too damn high.

Just in the past month, the B.C. government has been dragged kicking and screaming to do the minimum to investigate the role of speculative foreign capital investment in Vancouver’s out-of-control real estate market. A growing public outcry, increasingly sharp political opposition from the NDP, and some diligent investigative journalism has finally pushed the B.C. Liberals to take some baby steps toward action on this crisis. This, after years of the government and their developer donors avoiding scrutiny on corrupt practices, including money laundering and “shadow flipping,” which are rampant in the frenzied real estate industry.

Seriously how will they ever enforce a vacant house tax?

What determines a vacant house?

Who gets to decide?

How long can you be away from home before you are taxed?

This is a joke, right!

The housing prices are rising steeply on the Island however you don't find any empty houses here. For us it is mostly people retiring and cashing out in the Lower Mainland and then coming here and bidding up the market because they have a pocketful of windfall profits. Coming from Burnaby to the Comox Valley I can tell you it is definitely not the Chinese that are driving the rising housing prices given my new home is a very, very white community.

Quote:

A foreign buyers tax introduced in a surprise move by the B.C. Liberal government Monday may cool the high end of Metro Vancouver’s red hot real estate market, even if it contains several potential loopholes and unintended consequences, say experts.

The new 15-per-cent foreign buyer tax will apply to residential real estate deals in Metro Vancouver — from Bowen Island to Maple Ridge/Langley Township — starting Aug. 2, according to legislation.

It could add hundreds of thousands of dollars in additional taxes for buyers who aren’t Canadian citizens or permanent residents, and potentially generate hundreds of millions in revenue that government plans to reinvest into affordable housing projects.

Left Turn Left Turn's picture

Apparently there are loopholes in the new foreign buyers tax.

Quote:
Soon after the province announced a new 15 per cent tax on real estate purchases by foreign buyers, critics were quick to point out the simple, and sometimes dubious, ways foreigners can avoid the extra surcharge.

Playing the market through purchasing pre-sale condos is one such way, according to NDP housing critic David Eby, MLA for Vancouver-Point Grey.

Pre-sale condominiums are sold often years before the building is built, and properties like these are not registered into the land title registry until doors open and the building is completed. Like the property transfer tax, the new foreign buyer tax is only applicable to properties in the land title registry.

Meaning, foreign buyers would not need to pay the 15 per cent tax on pre-sale condos.

The exact wording of the legislation states:

“On application at a land title office for registration of a taxable transaction to which this subsection applies, the transferee (buyer) must … pay tax to the government.”

Former Conservation Officer who refused to kill bear cubs enters provincial politics

Quote:
North Island baby bear rescuer and armed forces veteran Bryce Casavant is throwing his hat into the political arena.

Casavant has announced he will run in the new provincial Comox/Courtenay riding as an NDP candidate in the 2017 election.Casavant, who lost his job as a Conservation Officer after refusing to kill healthy cubs Athena and Jordan in 2015, became an international headline that resulted in a public outcry and support from comedian Ricky Gervais. "Because I did not kill the bear cubs, I was removed from my job by the B.C. Government.

The public rallied behind me with over 300,000 supporters and tens of thousands of complaints online and in writing to the Provincial Government," Casavant said.

"As a stanch defender of social equality, I felt I must do something. Earlier this week, after a rigourous vetting and screening process, I was officially approved by the B.C. NDP Party as a nomination candidate for the new Vancouver Island North-Comox-Powell Riding," Casavant writes.

Casavant is now looking for support. "I am a passionate father who is dedicated to social equality and to our environment. I am asking that you support me in seeking the Courtenay Comox nomination in order to represent NDP members during the May 2017 election."

Quote:
With just over 200 days until a much-anticipated provincial election, the B.C. Liberals played a surprise political card Monday by firing the elected members of the Vancouver School Board.

The move, downright cruel in its timing, shows the B.C. government is willing to put cynical and divisive politics above public education. With few seats to lose in the City of Vancouver, the right-wing provincial government clearly thinks it can gain politically province-wide by ripping the bandage off of a wound that school board trustees have spent months working in good faith to heal. Full disclosure: My eldest child just started kindergarten this fall in Vancouver, so my visceral outrage is both parental and political.

The VSB’s deadline for passing a balanced budget was June 30. Consultations and negotiations have been ongoing for months, and the board was widely understood to have reached a compromise allowing it to finally pass its budget. The vote was set for 7 p.m. PDT Monday night.

The VSB has long been among the most vocal local school boards in B.C.

However, Monday morning, just hours before the vote was to take place, B.C. Liberal Education Minister Mike Bernier held a press conference to announce that all nine members of the VSB had been fired. Bernier claimed the firing was due to the board missing its June 30 deadline for approving a balanced budget, and the minister also made reference to a recent audit of the board and allegations of a “toxic” work environment.

The entire nine-person board has been replaced by Dianne Turner, who was just hired by the government in July as chief educator for the province.

Christy Clark's is laughing all the way to another election victory in 2017 That's correct folks that will be 20 consecutive years of right-wing government in BC

So the great BC NDP strategists have come up $10 per day child care because it did the federal NDP so well in the last election, eh!

They had the issues including abolish MSP premiums but they handed that to the BC Greens and in so doing handed Christy Clark another election victory. Where is the BC NDP jobs strategy? Christy Clark will be polishing her hard hat on a regular basis from now until election day. How dumb can the BC NDP be?

And the Chair of the New Westminister School Board is running for the BC Greens. Go figure, eh!

Quote:

Recent actions by the Liberals reveal, beyond a mere desire to maximize their advantage with early campaigning, downright disdain for democracy itself.

With scant notice, the governing party cancelled the fall session of the legislature that was supposed to run from Oct. 3 to Nov. 24. It won’t reconvene until February, when there’ll be a brief pre-election session. The Liberals pulled this trick last election as well, cancelling the Fall 2012 session of the legislature ahead of the 2013 election.

...

The next anti-democratic move by the Liberals was even more egregious. Last week, Education Minister Mike Bernier fired the elected Vancouver School Board, showing contempt for the mandate earned by the trustees from tens of thousands of voters.

The firing was supposedly due to the board’s failure to approve a balanced budget by the June 30 deadline. (The majority of the VSB trustees had voted against the proposed budget to protest provincial cuts and systemic underfunding of public education.) But the VSB chairperson, trustee Mike Lombardi, had just informed the B.C. government that they intended to vote through a balanced budget at a meeting on Oct. 17. Bernier responded by announcing the firing of the board just hours before that vote was to take place.
