Is Tom Mulcair Withdrawing This Summer?

When I write 'withdraw', I don't mean from the party leadership, But from the summer events this year to rally the NDP base. He was absent from Obama speech, and Peter Julian had to fill in for him in the Obama receiving line.

Correct me if I am wrong. But he seemed to be a no-show at Canada Day events, and now he seems to be skipping Pride Day Toronto Parade.

I do have a HUGE amount of sympathy for him. After two long grueling campaigns (election and party leadership), he does deserve a break.

But the question is;

Does it make sense for him to withdraw from public events? Or does he have an obligation to attend these events as he is still Party leader.

Tom Who?

NorthReport

With the NDP slightly ahead of the Greens in the latest polling, do Canadians even care who leads the NDP?

Politically for the foreseeable future, the NDP look like a spent force.

Mighty Middle

As mentioned Mulcair skipped Obama speech, and Peter Julian filled in for him on the receiving line. About Toronto Pride, the NDP has pressed Niki Ashton into representing the caucus. As Tom Mulcair is a no-show.

Mr. Magoo

If he skips:  "Tom Mulcair too busy washing his beard to attend Obama address to Parliament"

If he attends:  "Tom Mulcair dutifully stands at attention for War Criminal -- 'Ready, Aye, Ready' says right-wing NDP Leader"

Mighty Middle

Mr. Magoo and the Pride Parade. Even CPC Leader Rona Ambrose attended this year. But Mulcair is a no show.

Was Joe Cressey there?

Federally and in most provinces the NDP are struggling but I think the NDP here in BC have a very good shot at winning the provincial election in May 2017 if Horgan runs a good campaign.

NorthReport

Let's just say, don't beat your rent money on it.

I expect the BC NDP will probably lose another 10 seats in 2017 because the majority of voters want jobs.

Geoff

I wouldn't blame Tom if he decided he just wasn't interested. However, in that case, he should officially step down, so an interim leader can take his place.

Hopefully a majour plank in the BC NDP's election platform will be increasing good jobs. I think that should be one of their top 3 election issues. Increasing affordability and reducing government corruption being the other two.

kropotkin1951

I doubt if the electorate is going to buy the offer of a free LFG pony for everyone two elections in a row.

That is what I was thinking Geoff. I feel for him, I really do. However I look at Rona Ambrose who is interim leader of the CPC, she is everywhere. She is attending every cultural event, shoring up the base. Keeping the CPC relevant and reaching out to appeal to new supporters The NDP is not doing that. These events are really important and sending a surrogate to represent the leader isn't going to cut it. A leader needs to attend these to remain in the public consceneness.

Coming up is the Carribean Carnival and the Calgary Stampede. What is no one from the federal NDP shows up to those events?

Keeping the CPC relevant? That's not exactly how I'd characterize her running around. I'd say it was more in the line of trying to erase the memory of Harper from the electorate's brain.

Nobody believed the LNG thing first time around. I don't know why not believing it second time around would make any difference. Horgan at least doesn't have a record of falsifying documents to pack around like Adrian Dix, but I doubt you could elect an NDP government in BC if they were led by Jesus Christ, and the Liberals were caught eating babies at their barbecues.

Pondering

He is probably doing what the executives of the party want. The NDP doesn't benefit from Mulcair's brand. I noticed everyone is piping down. No more Trudeau attacks from Ashton or Cullen. Could be they figured out what I have been saying. It was not benefiting the NDP or harming the Liberals to be full of perpetual outrage. I would bet that the todo over Trudeau backing into REB backfired and hurt the NDP because that was the turning point afterwhich the NDP has been relatively silent.

Mulcair is interim leader now, not leader. He lost the leadership review badly. This is the time for the NDP to withdraw and focus on the party's future. The old strategy that seemingly worked so well for Layton, of squeezing the Liberals out of the running to create a contest between the Conservatives and the NDP failed. The Liberal Party has never been stronger. The Liberals had policies left of the NDP while maintaining their credibility as business friendly and moderate. In the end it was the NDP that was squeezed out and left with no significant policy area to differenciate itself.

The good news is that this state of affairs strengthens the left wing of the party. The only way for the NDP to be relevant is if they properly oppose neoliberalism.

One exception to hanging back would be if the NDP would come out strong against CETA and TPP explaining why these deals are bad for all the countries involved not just Canada. Another would be opposing the pipelines based on threat to the immediate environment and the inevidable reduction of fossil fuel use which will render the pipelines far less lucrative.

I'm more doubtful of Ashton's suitability as a leader than I was because she has shown a worrying lack of political instinct. Cullen is too focused on winning above all else which ironically stands in the way of winning.

The NDP needs a Corbyn or a Sanders. Layton might have been the one. Sadly he is gone so the NDP must find a leader who can unite the party.

Mulcair was spotted in the Departures Terminal in Paris.  Someone posted a photo online today.

He's apparently been gone since June 15.  A family wedding was said to be the reason.

Well he is back in Canada now and skipped the Calgary Stampede. Rona Ambrose was there. Harper was there. Trudeau was there. But NO Mulcair. Yes Rachel Notley is the NDP Premier of Alberta, but to have no other federal MP (other than Linda Duncan) present at the stampede makes the Federal party look bad.

Mr. Magoo

I guess one can interpret this however one would like.

Another read would be that the Calgary Stampede is just a Texas-wannabe, big-hat, wild-west opportunity to euthanize another two or three horses.  By skipping it, Mulcair is saying "we have better things to concern ourselves with than who can ride fastest around some barrels or who can eat the most ribs in ten minutes".  Discuss.

Well, I think if Mulcair had made that statement, as you have put it, then we could say he was avoiding the Calgary Stampede on principle. So far as I know, he hasn't said anything about why he wasn't there. I suspect he just didn't want to deal with reporters asking him a bunch of dumb questions about his political future.

Are we talking about the same Calgary Stampede?

[url=http://www.theglobeandmail.com/opinion/calgary-stampede-torturing-cows-a... Stampede: Torturing cows and horses is wrong, outdated and illegal[/url]

Though I don't suppose Tom Mulcair would have been absent for any such good reason.

Even Spain is talking about getting rid of bullfighting. Would be nice if Calgary eased its way into the 19th century.

Hazel McCallion wasn't at the Stampede. Maybe it should be shut down.

Pretty sure Mulcair has attened the CS in past years. My guess is he wants to take a break from big events this summer. Not that big of a deal really.

Mulcair went to the Stampede in 2014 & 2015. He skipped this year

Yes, as that article stated, Catalonia banned bullfighting six years earlier.

Unlike bullfighting, couldn't the Stampede be reformed to incorporate more humane standards and eliminate certain events that are the most lethal for horses and cattle?

Yes, a Corbyn or Sanders would be nice, but perhaps one who isn't an old white guy.

I agree that not only jobs (with a green angle) but also affordable housing would be very important issues in BC.

It certainly should be but from my perch I see extreme alienation, brought on by endless neo-liberal regimes, in which even conceptualizing radical alternatives is beyond most people. Everywhere is individualistic "solutions" and survival mode.

From the posted article by Camille Labchuk:

Quote:
According to renowned animal behaviourist Dr. Temple Grandin, fear is the most difficult emotion for these sensitive animals, and psychological suffering may be even more unbearable for them than physical pain.

Rodeo events couldn’t exist without inflicting distress: Animals don’t run because they want to; they run because they are afraid.

Sorry, but someone who thinks cows only run because they're afraid doesn't know anything about cows. One of the funniest thinigs I've ever seen (in my distant youth) was a half-dozen white face heifers on our hillside farm when a large buck jumped a fence and trotted across their field. Within a couple of seconds, they were charging after that deer like a bunch of, well, stampeding cattle. The buck noticed this activity behind him, and sort of glanced over his shoulder at the thundering herd, before he turned on the afterburners and left them in the dust. To see those galumphing heifers trying to keep up with the very graceful buck was a treat.

Milk cows are bred to be docile, and they are, except for occasionally taking a swipe at the milker. White face and other beef cattle are not so docile. And they have very thick hides. And if one runs, they all run, and they have no idea of why they're running.
