It's kind of like a declaration by the public that politics is meaningless. They have no faith, so both nations chose charades. Neither Trudeau nor Trump are a threat to the corporate sector or banks, who in both nations will be empowered even further under each respective administration. Taking differences of each country into account, their policies were quite similar (at least, from what I gathered by going through both Sanders' website and by going through the NDP platform.) My comments are inspired by Adam Curtis' documentary HyperNormalisation (available on archive.org or youtube) and/or any of his documentaries, actually (they all have relatively the same theme). Recommended.

The unknown is part of what makes this drama more exciting than a Clinton win (I do feel Clinton was the better choice, however). With Clinton, it was more of the same. With Trump, it's likely more of the same too. But there's still the unknown of his bullish personality at play. Will he and Putin get together and start bombing places? Will there be increased racial tension? Will he rip up NAFTA and we go back to FTA? Or, will international stuff remain unchanged, but Keystone XL and coal mining resume, making some people happy with increased employment? The last seems most likely.
