You know, not that I don't think Slavoj Žižek is a brainless ass; he is one.  But at least he had the good sense to recognize that things are going to be far worse under Trump. And the honesty to say so. That is why he is happy because he thinks that this is going to bring this all closer to revolution.

In that, well, he just proves himself the arrogant idealogue dumbass that he is.

I think many people did not ignore it they merely stayed at home. Any of the Republican candidates would arguably have been as worrisome as Trump and any of them would received about the same level of support. Just look at the nut jobs that inhabit the Congress and Senate Republican caucuses.

It seems nearly half the population in the US understands that the game has nothing to do with them.

You know, I don't have a problem with someone enjoying some good clean fun that doesn't hurt anyone.

That someone  - if this story is to be believed, anyway - went to the lengths of hiring sex workers to piss all over a bed just because someone he held a grudge against slept in it, I'd agree there might be something not quite right there.

And more than his deep streak of misogyny, I'd say Trump's super thin skin and ability to hold a grudge makes this sound just like the sort of thing he might do. Even if it meant running the risk of being recorded in the act.

Never mind that they have already used that tactic against him and he has survived because it was crap, whereas in Trump's case a good deal of it has already been proven to be true, in some cases because he is on tape saying it himself.

Really, why are you going to bat for this fellow? It isn't like you need it to make a case against the power brokers. Do you honestly see him as in any way progressive, or is this just about him being a useful tool, even if that use means opening up the arctic to Exxon?

Let us hope that those who are sworn to defend the constitution will do their job.

6079_Smith_W

Unprecedented assault?

I wonder what Abe Lincoln would say about that.

He actually had to go out on a limb and have lawmakers arrested without due process in order to prevent the secession of Maryland (his actions were upheld by the courts). He was dealing with assassination threats before he reached washington.

For that matter, you might want to ask John Adams, regarding the actions of his vice president.

As for Trump, I can see why you're trying to blow this up into some kind of conspiracy, but frankly the man's own actions, from him being completely unprepared for the job, to his potential treason, to his ignoring nepotism and conflict of interest, are more than enough justification for predictions that he might face completely legal impeachment before the end of his term.

Chris Hedges weighs in. The Real Purpose of the U.S. Government’s Report on Alleged Hacking by Russia

It's all about getting rid of Trump. And Hedges also address what comes after Trump is impeached.

Chris Hedges wrote:

1. The primary purpose of the declassified report, which offers no evidence to support its assertions that Russia hacked the U.S. presidential election campaign, is to discredit Donald Trump. I am not saying there was no Russian hack of John Podesta’s emails. I am saying we have yet to see any tangible proof to back up the accusation. This charge—Sen. John McCain has likened the alleged effort by Russia to an act of war—is the first salvo in what will be a relentless campaign by the Republican and Democratic establishment, along with its corporatist allies and the mass media, to destroy the credibility of the president-elect and prepare the way for impeachment.

The allegations in the report, amplified in breathtaking pronouncements by a compliant corporate media that operates in a non-fact-based universe every bit as pernicious as that inhabited by Trump, are designed to make Trump look like Vladimir Putin’s useful idiot. An orchestrated and sustained campaign of innuendo and character assassination will be directed against Trump. When impeachment is finally proposed, Trump will have little public support and few allies and will have become a figure of open ridicule in the corporate media.

2. The second task of the report is to bolster the McCarthyist smear campaign against independent media, including Truthdig, as witting or unwitting agents of the Russian government. The demise of the English programming of Al-Jazeera and TeleSur, along with the collapse of the nation’s public broadcasting, designed to give a voice to those not beholden to corporate or party interests, leaves RT America and Amy Goodman’s Democracy Now! as the only two electronic outlets with a national reach that are willing to give a platform to critics of corporate power and imperialism such as Julian Assange, Edward Snowden, Chelsea Manning, Ralph Nader, Medea Benjamin, Cornel West, Kshama Sawant, myself and others.

Seven pages of the report were dedicated to RT America, on which I have a show called “On Contact.” The report vastly inflated the cable network’s reach and influence. It also included a few glaring errors, including the statement that “RT introduced two new shows—‘Breaking the Set’ on 4 September and ‘Truthseeker’ on 2 November—both overwhelmingly focused on criticism of the US and Western governments as well as the promotion of radical discontent.” “Breaking the Set,” with Abby Martin, was taken off the air two years ago. It could hardly be tarred with costing Hillary Clinton the election.

The barely contained rage of Director of National Intelligence James Clapper at the recent Senate Armed Services Committee hearing on foreign cyber threats was visible when he spat out that RT was “promoting a particular point of view, disparaging our system, our alleged hypocrisy about human rights, et cetera.” His anger was a glimpse into how the establishment seethes with hatred for dissidents. Clapper has lied in the past. He perjured himself in March 2013 when, three months before the revelations of wholesale state surveillance leaked by Snowden, he assured Congress that the National Security Agency was not collecting “any type of data” on the American public. After the corporate state shuts down RT, it will go after Democracy Now! and the handful of progressive sites, including this one, that give these dissidents space. The goal is censorship.

3. The third task of the report is to justify the expansion of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization beyond Germany, a violation of the promise Ronald Reagan made to the Soviet Union’s Mikhail Gorbachev after the fall of the Berlin Wall. Expanding NATO in Eastern Europe opened up an arms market for the war industry. It made those businesses billions of dollars. New NATO members must buy Western arms that can be integrated into the NATO arsenal. These sales, which are bleeding the strained budgets of countries such as Poland, are predicated on potential hostilities with Russia. If Russia is not a threat, the arms sales plummet. War is a racket.

4. The final task of the report is to give the Democratic Party plausible cover for the catastrophic election defeat it suffered. Clinton initially blamed FBI Director James Comey for her loss before switching to the more easily demonized Putin. The charge of Russian interference essentially boils down to the absurd premise that perhaps hundreds of thousands of Clinton supporters suddenly decided to switch their votes to Trump when they read the leaked emails of Podesta. Either that or they tuned in to RT America and decided to vote for the Green Party.

The Democratic Party leadership cannot face, and certainly cannot publicly admit, that its callous betrayal of the working and middle class triggered a nationwide revolt that resulted in the election of Trump. It has been pounded since President Barack Obama took office, losing 68 seats in the House, 12 seats in the Senate and 10 governorships. It lost more than 1,000 elected positions between 2008 and 2012 nationwide. Since 2010, Republicans have replaced 900 Democratic state legislators. If this was a real party, the entire leadership would be sacked. But it is not a real party. It is the shell of a party propped up by corporate money and hyperventilating media.

The Democratic Party must maintain the fiction of liberalism just as the Republican Party must maintain the fiction of conservatism. These two parties, however, belong to one party—the corporate party. They will work in concert, as seen by the alliance between Republican leaders such as McCain and Democratic leaders such as Sen. Chuck Schumer, to get rid of Trump, silence all dissent, enrich the war industry and promote the farce they call democracy.

Welcome to our annus horribilis.

The United States of Fake Democracy aims, says Hedges, to destroy democracy and call the result ... democracy.

Bruce Schneier, the systems security expert, has an interesting take on what the U.S. security apparatus is doing. He thinks it is not trying to destroy Trump, but merely to neutralize the blackmail potential of whatever the Russians might actually have on Trump:

Bruce Schneier wrote:
Imagine that you are someone in the CIA, concerned about the future of America. You have this Russian dossier on Donald Trump, which you have some evidence might be true. The smartest thing you can do is to leak it to the public. By doing so, you are eliminating any leverage Russia has over Trump and probably reducing the effectiveness of any other blackmail material any government might have on Trump. I believe you do this regardless of whether you ultimately believe the document's findings or not, and regardless of whether you support or oppose Trump. It's simple game-theory.

This document is particularly safe to release. Because it's not a classified report of the CIA, leaking it is not a crime. And you release it now, before Trump becomes president, because doing so afterwards becomes much more dangerous.

Chris Hedges on Donald Trump's 'Naked Kleptocracy' (and vid)

http://www.truthdig.com/avbooth/item/chris_hedges_on_trumps_naked_klepto...

"Hedges, who once characterized the choice between Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump as between neoliberalism and fascism, expands on the ideological forces at play behind Trump's popularity.

Hedges says he doesn't believe that, moving forward, the Democratic Party will recognize its blindspots. He argues, for instance, that Senate minority leader Chuck Schumer 'is the go-to guy if you want Wall Street money in the Democratic Party,' and that Schumer 'epitomizes all the characteristics that the electorate turned against.'

President-elect Trump, Hedges continues, won't be able to stand up to these establishment forces because Trump is 'malleable and easily manipulated.' 'I just don't see him having either the experience or the fortitude to stand against the deep state,' Hedges says.

'And let's be fair, Obama didn't either.'

He also discusses what he considers the faux threat of Russia and the growing 'New McCarthyism' in the United States."

This is variations on a theme. Plan "A" is discrediting Trump as Putin's useful idiot. Plan "B" is Trump as a victim of Russian blackmail. Both are based on unsubstantiated, secret claims never to be made public. Both relate to the Russian bogeyman under the bed.

This is still the "deep state" trying to destroy Trump.

Also when it comes to Clinton, there is no reason to trust her either.

As politicians go, actually, she is pretty high on the trustworthy scale. http://m.motherjones.com/kevin-drum/2016/08/hillary-clinton-one-americas...

I can grant this when it comes to lying.

Not so much when it comes to policies and actions taken. I am mainly speaking about foreign policies she has endorsed.

I am also not particularly interested in making a false equivalent to Trump. I think there is no comparison.

Clinton has, however not show a real comprehension of how much poeple are hurting and I think this is what defeated her. Many people supported hoe over Trump but it seems many people were just not motivated to come out. I think this was a question of trust. People just did not feel confidence that she would really be there for them.

This plus the nastiness from Trump did not lead to victory.

And this is the dynamic that we have seen growing in the US and Canada over the last 50 years. At one time if you did not offend and the other did you could win. Now you have to get people to relate to you to motivate them to come to the polls. The numbers are significant.

When most voters are long decided and immovable, you are dealling with a small group.

In Canada voters that can be won over may be about 10% in most years in the US I think it is less, perhaps just a couple points. There is another 5-10% that may or may not decide to vote. Brinigng them out may be more effective than worrying about a small number who may be tuned off. This is why bland is failing and standing for something is needed more than before. Bland works only if you have a large number of people who will vote with little motivation and will listen to your message. Now your potential voters are not so much the ones who could vote for the other side but the ones who might not show at all.

Clinton did well enough among the voters and she really had little to gain from those who voted for Trump. The ones who stayed home are the ones who prevented her from winning. She did not give them enough reason.

In Canada, in 2015, we actually had people switch from NDP to Liberal by election day but this kind of swing is not all that common in the US and with things this polarized there is less of this than ever.

Should either of them clash with Iran, the stage will be set for a potentially direct military confrontation between Tehran and Washington. In other words, there may not be a potentially more combustible spot on the planet. So we may be missing the point by speculating on what Trump will do to the Iran deal. The real question is what he’ll do to Iran—and just how disastrous the consequences of that may be.
