In 2011 he said "Elect me as prime minister...I will make unions illegal. Anybody who remains a union member will be thrown in jail.”

Is there any reason this needs a new thread, instead of going in the Conservative Leadership thread?

Um, the video is tightly cropped, and there is no context for that particular quote. It's possible, for example, that he was positing some hypothetical anti-union person to make a point about public opinion, eg. "Right now, there is a lot of anti-union sentiment in the country. If someone were to say 'Elect me for fiteen minutes, I'll make unions illegal, anybody who remains a union member will be thrown in jail', that person would get a lot of support."

And it's possible that he really meant it as it sounds. But I'm kind of wondering why the person who made the video decided to only give us seven seconds of the commentary.

In this instance, the two hosts were discussing a move by the federal government to provoke a settlement in the contract dispute that suggested the union's right to strike would be taken away if a deal could not be reached quickly.

Lang said the intervention collided with legal rights. “Whatever you think of unions, they have a right to strike,” she said.

O'Leary said: “Here's the right thing to do: Elect me as prime minister for 15 minutes. I will make unions illegal. Anybody who remains a union member will be thrown in jail.”

As per bekayne post several unions (OPSEU, NUPGE, CUPW) lodged official complaints to the CBC Ombudsman about O'Leary above comments on unions

Well, that's that then. Thanks for the context.

What a demented ball of festering sewage this motherfucker is. This is why it's imperative to never give the Conservatives another chance of rule. Between him and Leicht alone, deport them to the US. Talking about anti-Canadian values. Shit stains, the two of them.

Mr. Magoo

For a brief but wonderful tenth of a second I thought the thread title was:

Kevin O'Leary - "Elect me as PM I will make unicorns illegal"

Sure, Kevin.  And say goodbye to the 12-year old girl vote.

Why can't we trade a couple million people like O'Leary for a couple million like Sanders, Alicia Garza etc. We might be happier and so might they.

Ok ok I get it they want to make their country better but...

He can make onions illegal if he wants. I won't shed any tears over that. It'll just make him less appeeling.

Thank you for this. I was going to describe in greater detail what I thought of O'Leary but I worried about any insult to the Cymothoa exigua by a comparison it might find unflattering.

For those curious, the Cymothoa exigua is a tongue-eating louse, a parasitic isopod.

"This parasite enters fish through the gills and then attaches itself to the fish's tongue. The female attaches to the tongue and the male attaches on the gill arches beneath and behind the female. Females are 8–29 millimetres (0.3–1.1 in) long and 4–14 mm (0.16–0.55 in) in maximum width. Males are approximately 7.5–15 mm (0.3–0.6 in) long and 3–7 mm (0.12–0.28 in) wide. The parasite severs the blood vessels in the fish's tongue, causing the tongue to fall off. It then attaches itself to the stub of what was once its tongue and becomes the fish's new tongue."

Maybe we can get a couple of these lice for Leitch and O'Leary...

Because I oppose capital punishment, I wish O'Leary and Leitch and their ilk a natural demise.

Though I still don't get what O'Leary has against onions. If he makes them illegal, he should perhaps be sentenced to life in prison without chance of parole. Or meals.

I love that! I remember that!! Thanks, bekayne.

I love onions too, but what about the rest of the family? Garlic, leek, shallots and the wee chives?

He should be forced to learn French via mandatory binge watching of some of the more colourful characters in the Québec labour movement, from Chartrand to Laberge, and even Bernard Gauthier... though we need some women too.

After that, a minimum-wage on-call job somewhere in Lac St-Jean...
