I listened to the coverage on Radio-Canada and it was very respectful, and ended with a link to a concert by the ensemble.

Indeed, salivating about people dying is simply wrong.

I think R-C is different from the English language service. I won't venture a judgement on them.

Some Alexandrov choir for those who love Italian.

lovely.

try 23:22. 27.34. 30.44. 32.14. 33:56 (3 tenors!!!). 36:20 (soprano - devil in a blue dress). 37:30 (tenor sax). 40:10 (Kalinka). 46:03 (piano and baritone). 56:00 (Russian man dance). 58:30 (Russian Tom Jones). 1:01:52 (Katusha). 1:04:00 (spoken word in Russian).

Fuck, i get so angry at this shit. We get the short end of the stick in English Canada, every fucking time. We're better than this, but our stinking media makes sure to fuck us up and fill us with the most obscene prejudices possible. Yes, we ARE the most brainwashed. The fact that there are any progressives left alive ... Jesus, that's an accomplishment. Long live babble and any blockhead who hangs around here. You are the future.

I got through about thirty seconds of that and at that point the tears filled my soul.  Thank you for posting that.  The sounds of those voices, now stilled forever, is the best tribute that can be paid to those men.

This is beyond politics...it is simply sung truth.

Residents of Earth are asked to take shelter in bed, under a big thick blankie, and to wait out the remainder of 2016, a year that law enforcement officials describe as "armed, dangerous, and looking to thrill-kill".

Sort of a morbid irony there. If you saw or read Postcards From the Edge, Carrie often complained about how her mother always had to upstage her.

Do you have a link or detailed reference to the specific program and commentator? I'd like to make my own assessment of the justification for the lip-smacking pleasure you appear to take from denouncing him/her. Doubtless so would others here.

I'm almost as saddened by what you've said as by the loss of all those passengers and fine musicians with their thrilling voices. Of course if your indignation is just an attitude it's easily ignored but the loss of life is all too real.

ikosmos ikosmos's picture

Sorry - I don't have any practice looking up or referencing CBC radio brodcasts. It was the lead item that day that hour and, I must confess, it was very clever the way they did it.

It had all the external qualities of something respectful, yet wasn't. The breathless voice of the reporter just threw me. It was the sort of voice I associate with something fascinating, interesting, attractive, and even adorable. But the subject matter didn't fit at all. And, of course, things change their meaning when you jumble up the sequence. So when they noted at the end, as an afterthought, that 26 Dec was going to be a National Day of Mourning, rather than at the beginning to contextualize what was to follow, it didn't remedy the oddly disjoint report.

Sometimes when I listen to the (CBC) News, there is something else too. It's the sequence. I can't think of a radio example at the moment, but while I was waiting in line at the supermarket I grabbed the latest Nat Geographic and had a gander. Now Nat Geo was taken over by Rupert Murdoch I think, and I wanted to see if he had managed to ruin the magazine yet. Anyway, there was an article about orangutans. It was followed by an article about Russian youth.

Sequence. The news is like that sometimes. I can't remember if that day was that way as well. I think I shut it off after the 2nd or 3rd item. That's pretty typical for me.

Edzell Edzell's picture

To paraphrase Maslow; maybe when all you have is a shovel everything looks like shit.

Ken Burch

Perhaps, Ikosmos, the CBC is still so tied to the Cold War era(and still sees the Ensemble as "The Red Army Chorus-that is, as a musical embodiment of "the enemy") that it sees an event like this as a victory for "our side".  A despicable mindset.

Edzell, this thread is a place where the dead are mourned.  Show some respect for that, please.  Ikosmos is obviously telling the truth here.

Good one, Ken! When are you starting your stand up tour?

sherpa-finn

Sorry, Ken but over 55 million people die every year. And for a progressive discussion group to spend so much time and energy mourning the deaths of a group of active soldiers who were flying into a foreign country to entertain troops in a war theatre seems deeply bizarre.

I lean towards a little more acknowledgement of the lives and deaths of ordinary working people and a little less celebration of military interventionism with all its associated risks to active soldiers.

So, hows about a moment of reflection for the 30+ Mexicans who died in a horrific explosion at a market in San Pablito over the holidays?

Or the 200+ refugee / migrants who have drowned this month alone in attempting to cross the Mediterranean?

And no doubt, somewhere in the Himal there is an over-loaded bus plunging into a ravine more or less as I write.

Let us bless these souls with our fierce tears.

Can you tell us why this is obvious?

Is it because he heard them "licking their lips"?  Or if not that then why is this obvious, Ken?

I agree that those souls should be blessed by our fierce tears.  Absolutely. Thank you for telling us of those losses.

And those who know my posting history know that I'm as far from being an apologist for Putin as anyone on this board.

My point is that this was simply the sudden death of a choir and had no military implications.  But if the CBC was taking a "serves 'em right...they're the enemy" attitude, that is wrong.  The choir wasn't headed off to sing as part of a war effort, just to boost morale of some troops at their home bases in Russia-Canadian and American performers do that all the time, the armed services of both countries have musical ensembles that perform in various locals, and there's no real difference between the role of those ensembles and that of the Alexandrov.  It would be just as wrong for Russian media to do insensitive coverage of the deaths of a Canadian regimental pipe band or the U.S. Coast Guard Choir as it would be for the CBC to cover the death of the Alexandrovs in the way Ikosmos heard them cover it.

And I believe that ikosmos is posting here out of a sincere sense of grief.

My point was simply that this is a tragedy and the loss should be treated with respect.

As should the losses you mentioned there.

Timebandit Timebandit's picture

Except that I also heard the news report, and he's making shit up again. It was respectfully reported, there was no salacious gloating, no "breathlessness", it was a standard piece in a news broadcast. The CBC has also reported on development in the story, such as the flight recorder being found.

ikosmos ikosmos's picture

Well that's the thing, isn't it? News reports, like abbreviated commercials on the idiot box, constantly change their shape and size. Which ones do they make available on their site? The most recent, edited version? All of them? Maybe you should investigate and give us a full report.

What don't you understand, or didn't you read, when I said

Quote:

In a thread which you say is about mourning the dead, ikosmos' comment, using the death of 90+ humans as the excuse for a sleazy rant about some unnamed fictitious? & "obscene" etc. broadcaster and/or the CBC was ugly and out of place. It was to that sleazy post that my response was directed.

But the fact is, after viewing this board for a short while, I realise that much of what passes for discussion here is just blathering fixed & polarised ideoloogy & nationalism. In future I'll try not to be sucked into responding to nonsense posts. Might mean I'll be pretty quiet.

I mourn the loss of life in all early deaths and especially those like the Red Army Chorus - that's what I've always called them - when they put an end to one of the sources of richness in my own life.

ikosmos ikosmos's picture

Well, all we need now is a link to some of the gloating over the deaths associated with the plane crash. There was quite a bit in the Western MSM. Some of it hurriedly erased but you know the internet ... once it's up ...

You know, for "balance". Because someone needs to show how "morally upstanding" the Western MSM is.

6079_Smith_W

You know, given how many threads you do start, maybe you should start a Russian death thread, especially if you want to go off on that tangent.

But I suppose that would defeat the purpose of hijacking this one and making it all about you.

News broadcasts over the course of the day on a specific broadcaster - since it's usually the same newsreader or recorded report, don't really change that much. If you heard it on CBC Radio 1 or 2, so did I. You're ascribing feelings and motivation that you'd have to be psychic to know. What's more likely is that this is yet another attempt to hijack and obfuscate. Hope you get a bonus.

No, but maybe you can. I understand the US regime has a $20 Million slush fund for just that sort of thing.

Quote:
The passage of HR5181 “Countering Foreign Propaganda and Disinformation”, suggests that the ruling powers seek to escalate suppression of news and analysis which runs counter to their narrative.

Despite their current dominance in the media and information arena, that is not enough. They seek to further squelch opposing voices. The bill calls for “countering” and “refuting” what they deem to be propaganda and disinformation. A slush fund of $20M is provided to hire or reward “civil society groups, NGOs, journalists and private companies “ who participate in the campaign.

Hell. You could get some and then come back and ... "get some" more!

William Christopher (1932-2016)

Below is a cut and paste of something my son just wrote on facbook a moment ago.

"One of the things I love about MASH is that it is a deeply thoughtful examination of different ways to perform masculinity. Every character has a different answer to the question of what it means to be a good man. I always found Father Mulcahy's answer to be particularly persuasive. Christopher imbued him with a sense of dignity and sweetness, which served to communicate an important message: men can be gentle and kind, and there is great strength in softness."

Sweet and well said.

William Christopher's performance on that show had a supreme gentleness to it.  It made you feel like anyone could become a better person.

His demons vanquished by antipsychotic medication, Rosato spoke to the Star later that year of his gratitude for the “miracle” of being free and having “the privilege . . . to start over again.”

Rosato then made a comeback to performing after his time in custody; Goldhar credits work in radio for sustaining him in his early days of freedom. Work on TV and in small films eventually returned; however, the ordeal eventually broke apart his marriage.

Clare Hollingworth, RIP

"Clare Hollingworth died this week at the age of 105. Hollingworth published the 'scoop of the century'in 1939 when she first reported Nazi Germany's invasion of Poland, which then sparked the Second World War.

The headline of her original report in Britain's Daily Telegraph on August 29, 1939, read: '1,000 Tanks Massed On Polish Frontier.'

Amid media tributes to the deceased journalist, reference to contemporary events was absent. In the same week that Clare Hollingworth passed away, tanks were again rolling into Poland from Germany, this time driven by American troops.

But Western media outlets made no such connection..."

It's an odd thing. I was not a regular viewer of the MTM show, but I did happen to stumble upon the episode where she goes to the funeral of Chuckles The Clown, and can't stop laughing during the eulogy. It's one of the few extended segments of the show that I ever saw, and about the only one that I remember.

And apparently, it's the one that everyone knows and loves. It is pretty funny.

Ken Burch

For those not around in the Seventies, "Chuckles The Clown" was the host of the kiddie shows on WJM-TV, the fictional Minneapolis tv station where Mary Tyler Moore's character worked as a producer in the news department.  Chuckles is chosen to be grand marshal for a circus parade, and dresses for the occasion as a children's character named Peter Peanut(who looks like, yes, a giant talking groundnut). A very hungry circus elephant taking part in the parade breaks loose and shucks Chuckles to death.  Mary had been the one person in thr WJM newsroom to react with genuine sadness at the news of Chuckles' death; at the funeral, she was the one person laughing when everyone else was weeping.
