Testing again. I posted one after #51 which still hasn't shown up.

6079_Smith_W

Hey, that worked. Can't go back and edit it though, so be careful.

i wasn't able to post until i used the feedback function magoo noted in the bottom right corner

quizzical

just tried to post a new forum topic on sanctuary cities and it didn't work.

Here's my favourite: Try clicking on "Contact our Staff" - you'll find it at the bottom of the page:

Support rabble | Advertise with us | Contact our staff | About rabble | Log-in or Register for a new account | Corrections | Privacy policy | Comment policy | Newsfeeds | Mailing lists

Unionist

I'm flagging you for foul language!!! Oh wait, I can't...

quizzical

contact staff tells you you don't have access i tried it before i found ut about the feedback button

Unionist

The feedback button only gives feedback one way. At least when you click  Contact our staff, you get an answer!

Unionist

Actually that's inaccurate. Feedback tells you "Thanks for the feedback!" It's a little more personal than, "Access denied".

quizzical

to be fair whenn i used the feedback to say i couldn't post it was mere hours later when i could again.

but it's not allowing new topics.

Ken Burch

Is there a reason why updates about the site upgrade process weren't being posted?  I can't think of any reason why we had to be kept totally in the dark and have no ability to contact anyone.

josh

Back in business.  Alright.

lagatta4

Just a test this time - I want to post about a major victory in terms of saving a historic "lefty" riding here, but I'll try to do that under Québec a bit later.  And couldn't use the site at all to elicit support for an Iranian activist who had been detained and would probably have been sent back though she and her husband were tortured and detained for years and he was killed... Oh well, in any case we won that too, at least temporarily. To be continued!

Site upgrade update: Manual approvals of posts have been turned off, and you will shortly be able to edit opening posts. Thanks so much for your patience. Rabble is a very large site and it's taking a little while to get to all of the issues. So keep up with the feedback, and together we'll make the babble experience better than ever.

epaulo13

..love the spell check :)

..and the edit is working!

QUESTION: Where is the "QUOTE" function? It's useful and should be restored.

SUGGESTION: The aesthetics of the "active topics" page needs work - it's busy, dense, not in a useful way. For example, this is way too much information:

Kinder Morgan Pipleline Projectupdated (Page: 123 … Last Page)
by NorthReport on Fri, 2017-01-13 19:55

1. The "Page" thing should be eliminated completely, or maybe replaced by a "Last Post" link, which would actually be useful - but it should be on all threads.

2. We don't need to know the day of the week (Fri) and the time (19:55) that the thread was opened. I don't think we even need the date.

So, I think it should look like this:

Kinder Morgan Pipleline Project (Last Post)

Thoughts?

quizzical

i agree it's almost daunting to look at and figure out.

Ken Burch

Will we be able to send private messages again sometime soon?

Ken Burch

Thanks for the update, MegB.

MegB

Unfortunately I'm told that PMs are at least two weeks away.

Ken Burch

Thanks for taking it on yourself to do the updates, MegB.  We all understand that this is a large site and that a lot of work needs to be done to make the upgrade work...but those doing the work need to understand that this site means a lot to a lot of people and that it's not cool to just leave everyone out of the loop like we were until yesterday-especially when it was nearly impossible to communicate with the site staff for most of that time(why did they have to disable the "contact our staff" feature?)

Mr. Magoo

They didn't even just disable it (e.g. with the message "This feature temporarily disabled").

It said/still says "You are not authorized to access this page.".  Which gets me wondering how I go about securing authorization to contact rabble.  A form?  A criminal background check?  Deep vetting??

Anyway, good to see some forward motion on babble.  Slow and steady wins the race.

Just a test post to see if I have posting privliges yet.

Left Turn Left Turn's picture

Yay! I have posting privileges again!

First question is, what has happened to the posts that were sent for manual approval? I made a post in this thread last Saturday evening that was sent for manual approval, and it has not been approved. While it was critical of some aspects of the rabble upgrade, it didn't engage in any personal attacks.

Are you ready to unpack your invisible backpack, and acknowledge your "posting privelege"?  :)

None of these posts was queued for approval because of content. I've gone through all of the posts and all of them have been approved. Have you tried refreshing your brower and then looking for your post?

Ken Burch

My test posts all eventually appeared.  Have a nice weekend, MegB.

MegB

You too. Thanks Ken!

Ok, I see that my post has now appeared. It had not appeared when I previously checked on Monday. I also assumed that it would show up at the bottom of the thread upon approval, not halfway up the thread where folks who had already read past that point in the thread -- including me -- would not see it.

Is babble ever going to be cell phone friendly?

The NDP won a provincial by election seat in Saskatoon. This new NDP MLA is expected to be the next leader of the provincial NDP.

Meg - please confirm that these 2 questions/suggestions have been conveyed to the team? Thanks:

1. QUESTION: Where is the "QUOTE" function? It's essential and should be restored. I tried reproducing it using UBB code and HTML, but nothing worked for me.

2. SUGGESTION: The aesthetics of the "active topics" page needs work - it's busy, dense, not in a useful way. For example, this is way too much information:

Just noticed that rabble reactions is visible even if you are not logged in. I thought that was not the case before.

Left Turn Left Turn's picture

The embedded url function appears to be not working. I tried to use the UBB code to embed the url of Libby Davie's article on the NDP leadership race in the article title, and it didn't work.

Left Turn Left Turn's picture

I tried to create a new topic in babble banter, about the political compass of the Russian Revolution, available at the following likn: http://arzamas.academy/materials/1269

I got a confirmation message that my topic was created, and yet I cannot find it, not on the active topics list, and not in the babble banter forum. This would suggest that we still cannot post new forum topics. Any idea when this will be rectified?

Mr. Magoo

Is there -- or should there be? -- a thread where users can list deficiencies, post-upgrade?

I've noticed, for example, that when quoting a single paragraph, that paragraph appears in a noticeably different style (which is good, since quotes aren't in a little box any more, or otherwise well noted) but any subsequent paragraphs in the quote will be rendered in the same style as other text.  Lemme see if this will show it:

Quote:
Sans-serif bold (first para)

Serif (second para)

Not the end of the world, but techies need us to tell them these things.

Also, seems like pictures don't embed when using UBB code.

kropotkin1951

I also tried to start a thread and it did not appear either.  Is that function not up and running yet?

Mr. Magoo

FWIW, tomorrow will be the three week milestone of this "upgrade" -- coincidentally, that's also the same amount of time it takes to make an actual chicken from scratch.  And we can't even post a picture.  :0

Unionist

I was thinking exactly the same thing today, Magoo, when I also tried to embed an image link (tried both UBB and HTML).

We have lost huge amounts of necessary functionality:

- embedding images

- quote function (as you point out, the blockquote thing sucks - and the "Reply" button is useless, and not only because the message numbering system is broken)

- the url function (with ability to name the link)

- ability to link to a particular comment (at least, I don't see it)

- mailboxes (but these are supposed to be coming?)

- the ability to bold, italicize, underline, and change font size (ok so I lied about this point).

And more, but I just can't recall right off the bat - except for the poor appearance of the Active Topics page, as I pointed out before.

We need a thread called "Babble Upgrade Problems", but I don't have time to figure out how best to open it right now. Feel free to pre-empt me Magoo, or anyone else. OH, which reminds me:

- inability to open new threads

What's inexplicable about this is that presumably, rabble installed software that makes this entirely possible.

So it's not like rabble's overworked techies have to code this functionality from scratch, in machine language.  All they should have to do is find the line in "config.txt" that says something like "allow images in posts" and change it to "=yes".

I can't help noticing that rabble's "A-list" bloggers seem able to post a simple photograph.  Is it a belated Festivus Miracle?  Is there an authentic reason why babblers need to wait three weeks to do the same?

Ken Burch

And, even after the upgrade, we STILL can't delete dupe posts.  We have to remove the dupe content post-by-post and the shells of the dupes just stay there, wasting system memory.

Mr. Magoo

I seem to have lost a post entirely.  I made it yesterday, to demonstrate that the first and second paragraph in a quote are rendered differently, and to suggest that perhaps we need a thread dedicated to deficiencies.  Huh.  There's another deficiency, I guess.
