Remember what happened with Nixon? Agnew was his vice-president, and no one wanted him, so before they really went after Nixon they forced Agnew to resign. Gerald Ford was put in as his replacement. Then, Nixon became the target, and Ford became president in the aftermath.
I'm not suggesting that will happen here, but there are other p0ssibilities than just having Pence, 0r Ryan, become president.
