Book Chronicles The Building Of Roger Ailes' Fox News Empire

On how the network has changed media in America

One of Ailes' lasting legacies will be that for millions of Americans, news is now no longer viewed as a way to be informed about the world; it's a way of gathering information that advances your side.

... The subtitle of my book is "Roger Ailes Divided A Country." The resentments and the antagonisms that are surfaced on Fox have cleaved our culture. The right has Fox [News]; MSNBC counter-programmed to Fox; the Internet is now populated with all brand of sites that present news from different ideological positions. Ultimately, we've lost this notion that journalism should be separate from politics. ... Now, politics and journalism have been fused and Roger Ailes has been at the center of that transformation.

I lost my dad to Fox News: How a generation was captured by thrashing hysteria

Old white people are drowning in despair and rage. Here's how my father lost his mind -- thanks to his cable diet

I do not blame or condemn my father for his opinions. If you consumed a daily diet of right-wing fury, erroneously labeled “news,” you could very likely end up in the same place. Again, this is all by design. Let’s call it the Fox News effect. Take sweet, kindly senior citizens and feed them a steady stream of demagoguery and repetition, all wrapped in the laughable slogan of “fair and balanced.” Even watching the commercials on Fox, one is treated to sales pitches for gold and emergency food rations, the product cornerstones of the paranoid. To some people the idea of retirees yelling at the television all day may seem funny, but this isn’t a joke. We’re losing the nation’s grandparents, and it’s an American tragedy.

People talk about the imminent “death” of Fox News itself, because of an ever-aging demographic. Again, Frank Rich makes this case, but I think his argument is dubious. Certainly the audience is graying to oblivion, but it’s a cold comfort to those of us who watch our parents or grandparents drown in an incessant downpour of outrage. We will only see the “End of Fox News” when my father and his contemporaries die. I do not want to watch my father and his entire generation spend their remaining years enraged at utter nonsense.

It is sad, and I don't think Fox is going to lose its audience when this generation dies. They'll recruit more and younger viewers.

One way to bring Trump down would be if Fox News turned on him but I think Bannon already has planned with Ailes for such an eventuality.

Ex-Fox News CFO offered immunity in Roger Ailes investigation

Mr. Magoo

If Trump were somehow brought to his knees by some solid and respectable investigative journalism into [whatever, insert thing] then that might give the world hope that the truth will finally set us free.

But if Trump is brought down because the sycophant who used to hold his coat will no longer hold his coat, that would be a bit of a deflated party balloon.

I think it will basically be up to the FBI Director.

Rupert Murdoch is key as Fox is doing the main media dirty work on Trump's behalf

Regardless of Congress at some point Comey will make a move I presume.
