If the party's leaders really believe that Russian intervention is anywhere in the top 100 list of reasons why some 155 million eligible voters (out of 231 million) chose not to pull a lever for Hillary Clinton last year, they're farther along down the Purity of Essence nut-hole than Mark Warner.

Moreover, even those who detest Trump with every fiber of their being must see the dangerous endgame implicit in this entire line of thinking. If the Democrats succeed in spreading the idea that straying from the DNC-approved candidate – in either the past or the future – is/was an act of "unwitting" cooperation with the evil Putin regime, then the entire idea of legitimate dissent is going to be in trouble.

Imagine it's four years from now (if indeed that's when we have our next election). A Democratic candidate stands before the stump, and announces that a consortium of intelligence experts has concluded that Putin is backing the hippie/anti-war/anti-corporate opposition candidate.

Or, even better: that same candidate reminds us "what happened last time" when people decided to vote their consciences during primary season. It will be argued, in seriousness, that true Americans will owe their votes to the non-Putin candidate. It would be a shock if some version of this didn't become an effective political trope going forward.

But if you're not worried about accusing non-believers of being spies, or pegging legitimate dissent as treason, there's a third problem that should scare everyone.

Last week saw Donna Brazile and Dick Cheney both declare Russia's apparent hack of DNC emails an "act of war." This coupling seemed at first like political end times: as Bill Murray would say, "dogs and cats, living together."

But there's been remarkable unanimity among would-be enemies in the Republican and Democrat camps on this question. Suddenly everyone from Speier to McCain to Kamala Harris to Ben Cardin have decried Russia's alleged behavior during the election as real or metaphorical acts of war: a "political Pearl Harbor," as Cardin put it.

That no one seems to be concerned about igniting a hot war with nuclear-powered Russia at a time when both countries have troops within "hand-grenade range" of each in Syria other is bizarre, to say the least. People are in such a fever to drag Trump to impeachment that these other considerations seem not to matter. This is what happens when people lose their heads.

There are a lot of people who will say that these issues are of secondary importance to the more important question of whether or not we have a compromised Russian agent in the White House.

But when it comes to Trump-Putin collusion, we're still waiting for the confirmation. As Democratic congresswoman Maxine Waters put it, the proof is increasingly understood to be the thing we find later, as in, "If we do the investigations, we will find the connections."

But on the mass hysteria front, we already have evidence enough to fill a dozen books. And if it doesn't freak you out, it probably should.

It was utterly predictable the Repubs and Trump would go this route.   They warned the democrats when the investigation was launched that they would investigate the previous administration's actions too.   Do you think the Obama administration has no dirty laundry to be aired?

In the end it will not be effective because it's bullshit and it's irrelevant.  Obama is no longer president.  It's Trump's actions that matter.  He will sink or swim based on that.

I think the Susan Rice booga-booga will resonate with the same people who believed (and still believe in many cases) in pizzagate, and who have been hating on Rice ever since BENGHAZI!!!

Michael:  Yes, exactly, and it has the advantage of probably having a grain of truth to it as well.   If not truth, even plausibility.  It would be entirely unsurprising, and consistent, for the Obama administration to have ordered survellience on Republican candidates for partisan purposes.

Consistent with past abuses of the intelligence apparatus of the US by the Obama administration.  

Regarding constant contact with a foreign power, the obvious rejoinders are now being made:   Donald sold condos to Russians, Hillary sold Uranium.    The Clinton foundation took donations from the Saudis, property deals and speaking fees from the Chinese government.  

It all looks like crooked politicians being crooked politicians to people who are uninvolved or not democratic party supporters.  

Hey, I'm looking forward to all the dirty laundry being aired, Repubs and Democrats, but I'm not holding my breath. 

And you shouldn't hold yours while hoping the Democrats get Trump impeached for being a Russian spy.

​Which should put paid to the idea that Trump was opposed in some way to bombing third world countries (if the Syria bombing hadn't).

So far as I know, the area wasn't cleared of children, but somehow I doubt there'll be any heartrending pictures of torn up babies.

There is another issue, and that is the idea of 'Weapons of Mass Destruction'. The MOAB that was dropped on Afghanistan has been described as the most powerful non-nuclear weapon ever designed. The Russians claim to have their own giant conventional bomb, but for the sake of argument I'll stick with the USA MOAB. Once one knows the numbers, a slightly larger or smaller bomb is of no consequence.

The MOAB dropped on Afghanistan yesterday had a blast yield of 11 tons of TNT. Little Boy, the bomb dropped on Hiroshima had a blast yield of 15 kilotons. In other words, that old nuclear weapon, which has been dwarfed by the later models, had a blast yield 1300 times greater than the 'Mother Of All Bombs'. Modern nuclear weapons have yields up to 50 megatons of TNT, but more standard weapons would be around 15,000 kilotons (15 megatons). That would put their blast yield at close to 1.3 million times the yield of MOAB.

It's wise to remember this when the talk turns to 'weapons of mass destruction'. There is no weapon, chemical, biological or otherwise, that comes anywhere near the destructive power of nuclear weapons. Nuclear weapons are weapons of mass destruction. All other weapons are toys to be played with by semi-literate presidents who have a need to distract attention.

This debacle has created a  big opening to put Single Payer or full Medicare for all prominently front and center. Single Payer means everybody in, nobody out, with free choice of physician and hospital.

The Single Payer system that has been in place in Canada for Decades comes in at half the cost per capita, compared to what the U.S. spends now. All Canadians are covered at a cost of about $4500 per capita while in the U.S. the cost is over $9000 per capita, with nearly 30 million people without coverage and many millions more underinsured.

Seventy-three members of the House of Representatives have co-signed Congressman Conyers’s bill, HR 676, which is similar to the Canadian system. These lawmakers like HR 676 because it has no copays, nasty deductibles or massive inscrutable computerized billing fraud, while giving people free choice and far lower administrative costs.

Often Canadians never even see a bill for major operations or procedures. Dr. Stephanie Wohlander, who has taught at Harvard Medical School, estimated recently that a Single Payer system in the U.S. would potentially save as much as $500 billion, just in administrative costs, out of the nearly $3.5 trillion in health care expenditures this year.
