Nope....It's not good for business. It's been 24 years since a Canadian team won the cup..I'm glad I was able to witnesss it because it's not going to happen again. Bettman wants an American team to win. And the best players in the league are all on American teans, I think in 25 years most Canadian will fold thank to huge contracts and clauses like non-movement. Players have a right to choose from a handful of teams when being traded and 98% will always pick an American team.
Top team will either lose in 7 games or make it to the 2nd round and lose in 4. Canadian teams are small potatoes now. None can compete with the stronger teams. I wish it still was like years ago where players made a modest salary,teams played harder and more toughness. Back when you got traded where you got traded. No clauses,no huge contracts.
The NHL really fucked up by giving the players way too much power. The game sucks now.
It's not about winning,it's about playing for bonuses and/or a new contract. I was a fan until the NHLPA union. The one union on this planet that should be shut down. Hockey players are now pampered and spoiled. It wasn't like that back when it was entertaining to watch. Players played to win. There were modest bonuses for playoffs and winning the Stanley Cup. They fought,they hit and they shot the damn puck. Dump and chase didn't exist.
Bring me back to glory days of the 70's. Now THAT was hockey.

What's the progressive part of corporate sports? The bloated, multimillion dollar salaries? The bloated, multimillion dollar profits? The public subsidies? The exclusive trademark rights? The $95 seats?
Hate to be a downer. But cheering for the local corporate team doesn't seem to me that different from cheering for Hooter's Restaurant. It surprises me that even progressives will make a special exception in order to cheer on someone from 2000 miles away who represents "the home team". Sorry, but it's just very bizarre.
Anyway, carry on. Will some "Canadian" team of mostly non-Canadians make it to the finals? I'm on tenterhooks!!!

Average salary was $80 000/year. I know that many players of the CH had jobs in the off season at Molson too. I see Yvan Lambert on Monk boulevard very often. With the exception of a handful of players,these players were far from millionaires. They weren't playing for contractual bonuses or their next contract. Interesting that most players played their entire career with one team. Players plyed to win ,they were very competitive and would have fist fights to police cheap shots and win the battle.
Now a player who warms the bench for a career still become millionaires. How many players nowadays can be seen walking in public,or going to local watering holes to play the VLT's?
So yes,these players were blue collar guys especially compared with the pampered,over privileged divas that make up the league these days.

Very well. I know that in hockey, and I think also most other sports, players in "the minors" get nothing like what players in the "big leagues" get (notwithstanding U.S. college sports). But I thought we were talking about the NHL is all. Seems to me like NHL salaries, even at the lower end, probably beat the pant$ off of "blue collar" salaries.

The Verbal Culture of Hockey Must Change
Ryan Getzlaf gets fined $10K for something that Andrew Shaw was suspended for. This part of hockey culture needs to change.
How can you hold a Hockey Is For Everyone month, where some teams specifically had Pride Nights, and have the captain of one of the best teams in the league, only come away with a fine for using a homophobic slur against a referee? This just shows that last year’s suspension of Andrew Shaw, and having Hockey is for Everyone Month really didn’t do anything other than make some organizations feel better.

We were talking about the NHL. Before the NHLPA,players were making an average salary of $80K per year. First million dollar contract was Bobby Hull in 1972 simply because he was the face of the new professional league,the WHA.
Marcel Dionne became the first NHLer to sign a one million dollar contract. Guy Lafleur followed. The rest of the league were hardly touching $100K per year. Average player was making $80K a year.
Far closer to a blue collar worker than what these over paid cry babies that make up the NHL today earn.

Well the NHLPA had gotten out of hand in the past 25-30 years. And not to go on about this,players into and through the 1970's usually did work for their corporate owners (as I pointed out about the Habs working for Molson in the off season)
Fact is,the NHLPA has made a mockery out of unions and the NHL sat impotently by as the inmates took over the asylum in the last 25 yrs. UFA's RFA's,appealing suspensions,etc...These were unheard of in 1967,77 and 87.
Again,average salary of a player was $80K/yr. The same money a plumber or an electrician earns and last I checked,those are blue collar jobs.
So like you,I'm done with this convo.
