Exciting game going on right now late in the third, it's tied 2-2, between Maple Leafs & Capitals.

Overtime now!

Nope....It's not good for business. It's been 24 years since a Canadian team won the cup..I'm glad I was able to witnesss it because it's not going to happen again. Bettman wants an American team to win. And the best players in the league are all on American teans, I think in 25 years most Canadian will fold thank to huge contracts and clauses like non-movement. Players have a right to choose from a handful of teams when being traded and 98% will always pick an American team.

Top team will either lose in 7 games or make it to the 2nd round and lose in 4. Canadian teams are small potatoes now. None can compete with the stronger teams. I wish it still was like years ago where players made a modest salary, teams played harder and more toughness. Back when you got traded where you got traded. No clauses,no huge contracts.

The NHL really fucked up by giving the players way too much power. The game sucks now.

It's not about winning,it's about playing for bonuses and/or a new contract. I was a fan until the NHLPA union. The one union on this planet that should be shut down. Hockey players are now pampered and spoiled. It wasn't like that back when it was entertaining to watch. Players played to win. There were modest bonuses for playoffs and winning the Stanley Cup. They fought, they hit and they shot the damn puck. Dump and chase didn't exist.

Bring me back to glory days of the 70's. Now THAT was hockey.

As a Canuck fan I am cheering for the Sharks and the possibility of a second first round draft choice.

NorthReport

Why can't Montreal play the whole game the way they played the last 5 minutes of regulation time?

Go Habs Go!

Yesterday:  who-hoo!

Please, please, please, let the Ducks eliminate the Flames in the first round. Movement in the districts adjacent to the Saddledome is bad enough as it is without hordes of suburbanites allergic to the C-Train bringing their cars into these districts.

NorthReport

Sweet!

Radulov had a big day on Friday with one goal (the winner) and two assists, and is tied for 1st in the playoff scoring so far this season.

NorthReport

Overtime again.

Go Leafs Go!

Happiness is a Leaf fan tonite!

Leafs win!

Go Leafs Go! (they are down 3-2 late in 2nd period but survived being short 2 players for 2 minutes, and then they scored)

Mr. Magoo

What's the progressive part of corporate sports?  The bloated, multimillion dollar salaries?  The bloated, multimillion dollar profits?  The public subsidies?  The exclusive trademark rights?  The $95 seats?

Hate to be a downer.  But cheering for the local corporate team doesn't seem to me that different from cheering for Hooter's Restaurant.  It surprises me that even progressives will make a special exception in order to cheer on someone from 2000 miles away who represents "the home team".  Sorry, but it's just very bizarre.

Anyway, carry on.  Will some "Canadian" team of mostly non-Canadians make it to the finals?  I'm on tenterhooks!!!

NorthReport

Go Leafs Go!  (3-3) Nice comeback so far.

Congratulations Toronto!

I agree with Magoo and feel somewhat guilty for the attention I give the game.

The critique of the NHLPA, above, seems like union bashing to me. YMMV.

Go Habs Go! (for tonite)

Tough game so far for the Habs.

Go Sens Go!

No Boston goal, I hope, hope, hope.....

Pageau -sweet!

I wish the Rangers and the Senators could eliminate each other. I hate those teams.  Pittsburgh will make the finals against St.Louis or Edmonton. So far it looks like it's going to be a duel between Pittsburgh and St.Louis. Go Blues!

NorthReport

Not a good nite for the Penguins. First losing Crosby and then having a goal called back.

Pittsburg were down 2-zip with 5 minutes left in the game - Amazin'

2-2 and now OT

NorthReport

I love hockey but detest the violence. Let's adopt international rules before too many more of our favourite NHL players bite the dust!

The game sucks now. Between the multi-million contracts and the No Humor League stopping the best part of the game -- blue collar guys enforcing laws, stretching rules and taking care of pests.

Its become a lot like golf,a snooty game for the rich.Go Seals Go!

After the Oilers collapse last nite, it feels good to be able to say:

Go Sens Go!

Do those "blue collar guys" earn blue collar wages?  Or else what makes them "blue collar guys"?

Ottawa has won all 3 games at home and in OT.

Edmonton all I can saw is WOW!!!

2 disallowed goals and they still won!

Pittsburgh will knock out Ottawa in 6 and Nashville will win the 2017 Stanley Cup.

Average salary was $80 000/year. I know that many players of the CH had jobs in the off season at Molson too. I see Yvan Lambert on Monk boulevard very often. With the exception of a handful of players, these players were far from millionaires. They weren't playing for contractual bonuses or their next contract. Interesting that most players played their entire career with one team. Players plyed to win ,they were very competitive and would have fist fights to police cheap shots and win the battle.

Now a player who warms the bench for a career still become millionaires. How many players nowadays can be seen walking in public,or going to local watering holes to play the VLT's?

So yes, these players were blue collar guys especially compared with the pampered, over privileged divas that make up the league these days.

I suppose the show must go on, so no much needed suspension

Very well.  I know that in hockey, and I think also most other sports, players in "the minors" get nothing like what players in the "big leagues" get (notwithstanding U.S. college sports).  But I thought we were talking about the NHL is all.  Seems to me like NHL salaries, even at the lower end, probably beat the pant$ off of "blue collar" salaries.

NorthReport

Sweet to see Getzlaf's  team go down to defeat tonite!!!!!!!!!!!!

The Verbal Culture of Hockey Must Change

Ryan Getzlaf gets fined $10K for something that Andrew Shaw was suspended for. This part of hockey culture needs to change.

How can you hold a Hockey Is For Everyone month, where some teams specifically had Pride Nights, and have the captain of one of the best teams in the league, only come away with a fine for using a homophobic slur against a referee? This just shows that last year’s suspension of Andrew Shaw, and having Hockey is for Everyone Month really didn’t do anything other than make some organizations feel better.

We were talking about the NHL. Before the NHLPA,players were making an average salary of $80K per year. First million dollar contract was Bobby Hull in 1972 simply because he was the face of the new  professional league, the WHA.

Marcel Dionne became the first NHLer to sign a one million dollar contract. Guy Lafleur followed. The rest of the league were hardly touching $100K per year. Average player was making $80K a year.

Far closer to a blue collar worker than what these over paid cry babies that make up the NHL today earn.

Given that the NHLPA came to be in 1967, 50 years ago, I have to think that $80K might have been a bit more than the average forklift driver or carpenter, or even machinist would have been earning.  Anyway, not looking to belabour this (pardon the pun).  I just like to periodically remember that hockey players (like most male professional athletes in premier leagues) aren't really like the rest of us.

Well the NHLPA had gotten out of hand in the past 25-30 years. And not to go on about this, players into and through the 1970's usually did work for their corporate owners (as I pointed out about the Habs working for Molson in the off season)

Fact is,the NHLPA has made a mockery out of unions and the NHL sat impotently by as the inmates took over the asylum in the last 25 yrs. UFA's RFA's,appealing suspensions,etc...These were unheard of in 1967,77 and 87.

Again, average salary of a player was $80K/yr. The same money a plumber or an electrician earns and last I checked, those are blue collar jobs.

So like you,I'm done with this convo.
