Toronto's, mostly. An older system than the others (ours aren't diesel; they are electric). Imagine that matters were even worse in the oldest systems; London, etc... but a lot of remediation has been done. It is a problem but not a reason to oppose public transport.

Yes. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but Toronto and Montreal have Canada's only two subways.

Again, jump in if I'm wrong, but Toronto's subway system is also electric, unless the "third rail" is just there to scare kids.

So much the better; I didn't do any research before posting. I know that our métro is electric, was surpised that Toronto's would be otherwise nowadays, but what do I know about that.

I'm working on a project on the subject of air quality. This is really interesting. The comparison is always to Beijing - their air is bad, but Delhi and Chengdu are much worse.

Well, as a Torontonian, I can certainly tell you that I don't really need some OHS inspector holding up a gadget in a subway station to tell you that something in the milk ain't clean. On a humid summer day you can smell it as soon as you're below ground level: the smell of old oil, mildew and burnt metal.

Vancouver has a subway system as well but it's much newer, and parts of the system are above ground which helps as well.

Actually almost all of the system is above ground. There is some underground downtown, but that is only for a short distance, and there is a newer section that travels along under Cambie street for perhaps 5 or 6 kms.
If you travel into Vancouver from Surrey, Coquitlam or New Westminster, you are above ground until only the last few block before the downtown terminus.

About a third of the kilometres are underground.
