How does a link to a Google search (the first result being this thread) qualify as a thread topic?

"At least 90 killed, 400 wounded in explosion in Afghan capital's embassy district."

Geoff

It didn't work in Iraq, it didn't work in Afghanistan (the first time), it didn't work in Libya, and it's not working in Syria. Just say no to dropping bombs on other countries.

Mr. Magoo

Evidently, Canada has been out of Afghanistan since 2014.  So it's kind of amusing that this thread could be revitalized after seven years.

It's possible you didn't get it, Magoo. I saw the revival of this thread as a confirmation that the majority of Canadians got it right. Rather than slaughtering Afghanis and seeing Canadians slaughtered to prop up a puppet government of the U.S. and NATO, Canada should have been gone many years ago - never gone in, in fact. Today's events in Afghanistan demonstrate again that Canada's imperial intervention was a murderous waste of time and energy. Perhaps future governments will heed the voice of the people and respect the sovereignty of people in other countries. At least, we should mobilize and be vigilant against future interventions.

Pondering

The problem is that what the majority of Canadians want doesn't matter unless they get to vote on the issue which they don't which is part of the reason people don't pay much attention to politics.  When 2019 rolls around they will again be presented with three party leaders and they will again vote for whichever leader they think is most plausible on the economy and administering the country.

Harper kept winning even when the economy was tanking because everyone blamed the global financial collapse and said Canada was fabulously stable in comparison.  Now the headlines are trumpeting that we are tripling US growth and more people have jobs than ever. Trudeau is getting praised by the world for being "progressive" on world trade. After all, if Trump is against it it must be good.

So sure the majority of Canadians want us out of Afghanistan but unless that opinion can be translated into political action it's meaningless.

When Kandahar Breathed Optimism

Thirteen years ago, teens took pictures of life in a city freed from Taliban grip. They may break your heart today.

Western imperialism, warfare and occupation is truly a thing devoutly to be wished and Afghans loved us for it. Hail NATO!

It seems that most NATO citizens are incapable of understanding that if we had not armed murderous terrorists thirty years ago the Afghan people would have been saved a ten year civil war. We were on the side of the mujahedin and warlords against the progressive secular socialist government that had instituted full rights for women and children. After those freedom fighters were defeated the people endured nearly ten years of terror, first from the Northern Alliance but they were so corrupt and murderous the Taliban took over the country. The people went from the frying pan to the fire for those ten years. Then NATO invaded because some Saudi's attacked the US. The poor suffering people then saw the same corrupt assholes that had preceded the Taliban return to power with the overthrow of the Taliban.

No where in this history has Canada or NATO ever thought about the people of Afghanistan.

What kind of democracy are the Liberals practicing if the majority of Canadians wanted and have wanted Canada out of Afghanistan for a long time?

In case you missed it Harper withdrew us from Afghanistan before the 2015 election. As for the embassy, most countries are not worried and their embassy staff are still in Kabul.

It was a serious FUBAR from the get go - from before 9-11 when all sorts of machinations were undertaken to overthrow any stable government in Afghanistan and the Taliban filled the void to restore some semblance of order, albeit a harsh and antiquated one. I believe it was similar to what happened in Somalia to some extent.
