That's a fascinating bit of behind-the-scenes reporting. So David Christopherson, Erin Weir and Brian Masse were amongst those who wanted Mulcair to go. Alexandre Boulerice had wanted Mulcair to go, but changed his mind (possibly because of the intentions of the rest of the Quebec caucus to support Mulcair). Nathan Cullen had agreed to "consider" taking Mulcair's place as interim leader, but wasn't involved in organizing the attempted coup (just complicit, as he also didn't tell Mulcair what was going on)... And Niki Ashton was the one who told Mulcair about the effort to get rid of him. Interesting. I'd be curious to know what her reasoning was, because I had the impression she wasn't a firm supporter of Mulcair.
Too bad the coup didn't work. Oh well... we'll be rid of him soon enough now.

Pratt, who is overseas, did not respond to numerous efforts to contact him. He is now said to be a key organizer for Jagmeet Singh’s leadership campaign although the campaign said Friday afternoon that he has no “official role.”
James Pratt was responsible for all the extreme vetting of nomination candidates.

I have no inside information here, but imagining myself in her place, my calculation would've been, roughly: He's on the way out. Convention voted to let him stay on longer. Just wait it out. Shoving him out the door right now strengthens Cullen's position as a potential competitor, weakens my position by casting me as a disloyal troublemaker, makes caucus less likely to trust me if I win, makes my competitors less likely to trust me if I lose, hands the media a "turmoil" narrative, and makes it more difficult to lay the party's problems at Mulcair's feet after the race is over.

Yeah, Ashton probably didn't want to strengthen Cullen's position. If she prevented that it was worth putting up with Mulcair for another year.

i like Nathan and i call bs on the personal attacks here of people who are our allies. if the CLC is fostering negativity between then it'si more than just bs imv. and i've lost respect for them.

It's the same reason her dad moved the selection of Greg Selinger as leader of the NDP to be unanimous in 2009, and the same reason he didn't participate in the following Cabinet revolt and waited until the leadership race was formally underway to announce his intentions the second time.
