Unifor takes over Milton Northstar Aerospace plant

August 10, 2017

MILTON – Unifor has taken control of the Northstar Aerospace facility in Milton, Ontario to demand that the company fund a dramatic 24 per cent pension deficit.

“This action sends a clear message to Northstar that the company cannot short-change workers and the pension of retirees that have made it profitable for so many years,” said Jerry Dias, Unifor National President. “There is no financial reason for refusing to fund the plan. The only excuse is corporate greed.”

After announcing the re-location of its Milton facility’s equipment to Chicago and Windsor, Northstar Aerospace refuses to meet the 24 per cent pension short fall for workers facing job loss. Since January Unifor and its Local 112 have attempted to negotiate a closure agreement to protect current pension provisions and benefits.  This short fall will affect future and current retirees, some of whom are already on a fixed income after having worked at the facility for more than 40 years.

“We have stopped production at this facility until Northstar holds up its end of a commitment, a commitment to the workers who have made this company flourish,” said Scott McIlmoyle, Unifor Local 112 President. “After months the company has refused to discuss the matter. Time is running out - Northstar needs to do the right thing.”

The occupation began at 4 a.m. ET and is currently underway at 180 Market Drive in Milton, Ontario. Unifor members and supporters are holding a picket line outside the facility and will continue to demonstrate around the clock. The public is welcome to attend to show support for the workers. Support Northstar Aerospace Workers – Stop Corporate Greed

After suddenly announcing the re-location of its Milton facility’s equipment to Chicago, Northstar

Aerospace refuses to meet the pension short fall for workers facing job loss. Since January Unifor

has attempted to negotiate a closure agreement to protect current pension provisions and benefits.

After months the company refuses to meet the pension short fall. That’s just not right. Unifor is standing up for fairness – retirees deserve their pension and Northstar can afford it!

What’s the issue?

As a result of a pension shortfall all retirees and workers will face a 24% cut in benefits. There is no financial excuse for Northstar to not supplement the pension plan. Milton workers helped to build Northstar into what it is today: a massively profitable corporation that continues to turn a profit.

A 24% reduction will mean a significant loss. Right now the average pension amount is $881 per month. The cut will mean a reduction of an average of $211 per month for all retirees.

Once the facility closes at the end of September the pension will wind up and Unifor will have no means to seek a resolution.

Unifor has attempted to seek a resolution since January. But despite our best bargaining effort to seek a resolution there has been no response!

Unifor members occupy Milton plant that makes Boeing parts

quote:

Unifor enters facility

Beginning at 3:30 a.m. ET on Thursday, Unifor members entered the facility, preventing the start of production. As of 12:30 p.m. ET, they were still inside while a picket line has formed outside.

Unifor members who work for the plant were not at the protest.

Dias told CBC Toronto that management representatives were stationed across the street from the plant, adding he expects to speak with them as well as with Boeing management before the day is done.

Heligear said it's pursuing legal options to regain control of the facility, and said the union's actions poses safety concerns.

"Seizure by Unifor of the facility prevented an orderly and safe shut-down of equipment and processes operating within the facility," the company said. "Until Heligear personnel can re-enter the facility and implement an orderly shut-down procedure, risk of a safety incident exists."

Good to see.
