"...While Western 'imagineered' ideals of 'democracy', 'freedom' and 'human rights' will be used to mask Aung San Suu Kyi's ascension into power, the underlying agenda is one of Wall Street-London hegemony across Asia, the premeditated encirclement and subsequent containment of China, and the full-scale regional exploitation of Asia and its resources by Western corporate-financier interests."

Whatever business is business.

Imagine having a freely elected government in Myanmar - of course that does not count for anything, does it?

Life, the unive...

Anyone who would write such trash knows almost nothing about the tragedy that has been the lot of the many different ethnic groups in Burma.  What ignorant trash.   You should be ashamed of yourself for posting such lies and attacks on someone who has endured so much pain.

What the hell is the argument here?  Does anybody really believe that the Myanmarian junta, a cabal of bloodsoaked multibazillionaire fascist generals, is "anti-imperialist"?

Or that keeping that junta in power is somehow "sticking it to The Man"?

The junta is not socialist.  it was never going to build socialism.  And this is exactly the kind of situation where "anti-imperialism" goes off the rails, and gets twisted into the old Mafia notion that "the enemy of my enemy is my friend".

Anti-imperialists(and I consider myself one as well)can do better than that.

It will be possible now to organize a true anti-imperialist Left movement in Myanmar...there will now be space...there would never be that space if the generals had prevailed.

Aung San Suu Kyi Stoops To Conquer Burma

http://www.scoop.co.nz/stories/WO1203/500660/aung-san-suu-kyi-stoops-to-...

"...some analysts, however, say Mrs Suu Kyi has been reduced to a mere token who the regime no longer fears, and is intentionally being permitted to win a seat because her election is worth the lifting of US sanctions. Washington hopes her victory will be the first of many democratic changes, so the US can increase its economic and political influence in the Buddhist majority, former British colony.

By staging the election and allowing other freedoms, the regime has risen to its most powerful position on the world stage, attracting politicians, businessmen and others from America, Europe and elsewhere. Columbia University professor Joseph E Stiglitz visited in 2009 and suggested 'removing the sanctions that have now become an impediment to the country's 'transformation.'

The sanctions include a ban on most international banking activity, rendering credit cards and bank transfers useless.."

Calling for sanctions when their own people are suffering daily from NATO's sanctions says sanctions are acceptable to Iranians just not against themselves.  I doubt if the people think that so it is interesting to hear the state media spout this bellicose rhetoric.

NDPP

It makes perfect sense for Muslim countries not to do business with Myanmar, given both the outrages occurring and the reality of western acquiesence/ignorance/approval of te genocide in progress. The two situations are not at all comparable in my view, but I have your point, nonetheless.

kropotkin1951

Part of what I meant was the definition of a country as Muslim or Christian or Jewish.  Press TV as the Iranian state media has a bias towards theocracy just as our state media has a bias toward oligarchy.

But the main point is that actions which hurt citizens need to be decried. That is why I am adamantly opposed to the sanctions against Iran, they hurt the average person.  That is also why it is unacceptable to discuss it as a potential tactic.

I Feel Betrayed by Aung San Suu Kyi

Quote:

In June 2011, when the Burmese Army broke a 17-year-long ceasefire and deliberately attacked civilians, firing mortar bombs into villages, committing terrible human rights abuses, and forcing tens of thousands of people to flee their homes, we looked to her for support, just as we always supported her. We didn't get it. There was silence, and then evasive answers when questions were asked.

This year, the same thing has happened over the situation in Rakhine State. Although she has power to let the world know what is going on in Burma, she has never spoken out against the Burmese government's attacks against Kachin civilians nor the situation in Rakhine and government organised abuses against the Rohingya. With her international stature she could pressure the regime to stop armed conflicts in ethnic areas, especially in Kachin State. She famously asked the international community, "Please use your liberty to promote ours," but she isn't using her liberty to help the tens of thousands of Kachin civilians being attacked by the Burmese Army.

In one recent speech in Burmese at Queens College, USA, she says that the silence was justified so as "not to add fire to any side of the conflict." What does it mean? Does she really see this as if it were two equal sides fighting each-other, when in fact it is Kachin people who have been attacked by the Burmese Army? She said, "What is it that I have to strongly condemn? If it is a human rights violation then I will strongly condemn."

And yet, she remained silent over serious human rights violations committed by government army soldiers, including attacks against civilian populations, extrajudicial killings, sexual violence, internal displacement, the use of human shields, the recruitment of child soldiers, as well as forced labour. Elderly women, children, and a disabled woman were all raped and many killed afterwards. Doesn't she see that many women and girls are being raped by the Burmese Army soldiers she said she has a 'soft spot' for? Is her understanding of what is going on in Kachin State so bad that she doesn't understand how insensitive it was to use language like that?

So, can someone give me a handy-dandy guide as to when it is acceptable to talk about Muslim migrants being sent into a region for the purpose of commiting terrorist acts and wreaking general havoc? Because when someone claims that that's being done to western countries, it's denounced(on babble anyway) as racist fear-mongering, and we are dutifully reminded that Muslims have good reason to dislike the West.

But when we're talking about a country that China supports, well, obviously, the Muslim migrants are "poor and illiterate" "weapons of mass migration", burning supposedly peaceful temples and churches in the name of Islamic extremism.

Is it really just as simple as "When they do it to the west, they have understandable reasons, but when they do it to countries in China's orbit, they're fanatical terrorists?"

Okay, so it's all about Islam then. None of  this "pushback against injustice" that the left insists on tossing into the analysis.

It does seem that Aung San Suu Kyi has lost her halo over this. She is not doing herself any favours by sounding so haughty in her responses to the press. Nor is her cult-like support helping.

I find it so odd that many seem to think that Buddhism is an antidote to violent thoughts and deeds. All organized religions have their horrible warts which include justifying their existence, supporting societal inequalities, and doing little to erradicate numerous other social ills.
