Debater, The bestial imagery of this comment is a little too much to take at breakfasttime. However, lagatta4, your hopes for Villeray-St. Michel-Park X just went up by one vote!

It was very surprising to see Gilles Duceppe support Denis Coderre because Duceppe has been a sovereigntist for so long and because Coderre is a federalist and was a Liberal MP.  They were on opposite sides for so long.

They even ran against each other in the 1990 by-election in Laurier-Sainte Marie.

But it appears that Duceppe may be supporting Coderre because Coderre is part of the establishment and because Plante seems to be a threat to that in some way.  But I'm not sure why it bothers Duceppe so much that Plante and Projet Montreal have connections to Quebec Solidaire and the NDP.  I would have thought Duceppe would have preferred that over someone who is a former Liberal MP.

Alan, that vocal chords thing is horrific. No, I don't wish him to die in a fire because he did that to his dog, but over 30 years ago on narrow little rue Drolet just north of Carré Saint-Louis, friends/neighbours were saved from a criminal fire by their little dog barking and I was saved by my wee black cat screaming bluidy murder...

It could be that Duceppe believes that any remaining chances for sovereigntism hinge on preventing the QS from moving ahead of the PQ, and that preventing that means preventing QS from achieving even an indirect victory-and that he fears a Plante victory could somehow trigger a large-scale swing from PQ to QS in Montreal-area ridings

In other words, Duceppe sees Coderre as the enemy of his enemy.

lagatta4

Ha! Hardly surprising from a former Maoist.

For up to date results. Looking good for Plante.

Plante 52%

Coderre 45%

508 / 4,138 polls reporting

I'm watching this on Radio-Canada and Valérie has an impressive lead. But of course anything can still happen.

Debater

Valerie Plante leading vote count in 12 of 19 boroughs.

Unionist

Bergeron is losing. Roger Beaudry of Projet Montréal is beating him 56% to 43%. That's all I really care about.

And lagatta, how about forgiving people (Duceppe) for their Maoist choices 45 years ago? Your comment is somewhere between hyper-sectarian and red-baiting. Who cares what someone's ideology is or was? We should judge people by their words and deeds, preferably today.

Bergeron did Projet a favor. Plante is a way better leader.

lagatta4

For the moment it still looks good for Projet and they have pretty much nailed it in Rosemont-La Petite Patrie where I live and just south of here in the Plateau, which has been so vilified, though Luc Ferrandez keeps increasing his majority.

Debater

Valérie Plante is maintaining a 52%-45% lead over Denis Coderre.

Pondering

I'm really surprised that Projet isn't leading in Pierrefonds.

Debater

Plante's lead is larger than the polls showed, so perhaps she gained more momentum after the final polling was done.

Unionist

Oy, CDN-NDG is looking gooooood! Can it be?

Debater

Almost 25% of polls now reporting.

CBC/Radio-Canada projecting LOWER turnout in Montreal compared to 2013.

Unionist, I so hope Sue wins!!!!!!

CBC declares for Valérie Plante! Ok, here we go!

Looks good everywhere!!! Wanna go out for a drink, lagatta???? I. Am. Happy.

Debater

Didn't turn out to be so close between Plante & Coderre afterall.

Pondering

Looks like Projet is winning the majority of seats too. So exciting!

Debater

Giuliana Fumagalli now ahead of Anie Samson in Villeray-Saint-Michel-Parc-Extension.

I'll be damned. An election went the way I hoped it would! I'm going to have to reset my municipal cynicism level.

Woohoo! Me too!! Long live electoral democracy!!!

[Did I actually say that?]

PS: Coderre has just called Valérie Plante to concede defeat.

pietro_bcc

The first election in a long time where I am happy by the result. I can't believe that Projet has 40% in RDP, in the last election they had 16% in my area of RDP. Insane.

I'm glad I voted Plante in the leadership race and in the election. Can't wait.

Unionist

I also voted for Valérie in the leadership race. And she beat that right-winger (can't even remember his name now) by less than 100 votes. Life is strange.

EDITED: Oh yeah, she beat Guillaume Lavoie (finance critic) by 79 votes! Glad I helped.

epaulo13

..congrats! i'm happy for you all!

Ken Burch

I'm happy for all of you.  Good luck.

lagatta4

I'm very happy, Unionist, but too tired this evening to go out for a drink. I have been nursing a bottle of wine and some 'goat cheese (I'm allergic to cow milk). So happy about Giuliana as only "rightwing ethnics" seemed to win in that patch, though there are so many poor workers in the area and people with dire housing problems.

cco

Maybe Bergeron and Danielle Smith can start a talk show together, entitled "I crossed the floor for this?!"

I wonder how many paper shredders are overheating at city hall right now.

Debater

Plante now has a 20,000 vote lead over Coderre.

pietro_bcc

The english media and actually myself personally, am shocked by the amount of english that was in her victory speech. Usually we get a token throw away line and that's it, but this speech had more english then I've ever heard come out of the mouth of a politician. I especially loved the part of her speech that said that there is more in common between anglo/allo/francophones than we are generally thought to have.

I really think she'll stand up for us when the provincial government tries to push us around.

And apart from that we just dodged a $500 million + stadium, that we were going to get with Coderre.

Ken Burch

Anybody wanna start a pool on when the WSWS denouces her?

Coderre is such a sore loser - no place in the "loyal opposition" for him. Wonder what he'll do? Will he be rewarded with some safe Liberal seat? He's a bit young to simply retire. There is only 11  years' difference in their ages; I guess Coderre is one of those people who was born old, like Jean Charest or Jason Kenney.

That said, I don't have particularly high expectations of the new administration... too burnt by the RCM, I guess. Mostly glad to get rid of certain hypocrites and liars, such as Bergeron, Samson etc and observe the humiliation of the far-right demagogue who runs the Suburban. Sue Montgomery's win was a nice touch.

lagatta4

Thanks to ricochet for dragging up the story of EX-VSP MAYOR (such a sweet sound, that) Anie Samson's complicity with racist stereotypes about Indigenous people and obstacles to turning the disused Hôpital chinois as a residence for Inuit patients from Nunavik as they get medical treatments "down south".

http://spacing.ca/montreal/2010/08/04/villeray-st-michel-parc-extension-...

The resident who reacted to the racist tract is an Algonquin woman who lived in the neighbourhood at the time. If she had not spoken out and informed Makivik, the affair would never had come to light.

In the committee defending the Inuit patients centre, we strongly suspected that in addition to prejudice, one major motivation was the eternal real-estate speculation. Seven years later, the former hospital is still empty and of course deteriorating to such an extent that it will probably have to be demolished, and doubtless become yet another condo building close to Jean-Talon Market and Jarry park... Pity; it was of course perfectly adapted to people with specific medical needs.

I'm also pleased because this is an area where "ethnic power-brokers" - and of course Trudeau - tend to get elected. It is wonderful that a left-wing allophone woman will be borough mayor now. In addition to French, Italian and English, Ms Fumagalli also speaks fluent Spanish... I hope this bodes well for progressive campaigns on other levels in the area.

Ha, still more on Anie Samson: http://www.lapresse.ca/actualites/grand-montreal/201711/03/01-5142317-cr... Imagine if Québec solidaire were anywhere near as powerful as the Coderre clique has claimed!

Possibly the happiest news of the night for me. I'd been afraid Wajsman would win. Seeing him get utterly crushed is quite a relief.

lagatta4

He even wanted to do away with the few Bixi docking stations in Westmount "to create more parking".

pietro_bcc

If I had to guess I would say that Coderre will run in Montreal North during the next provincial election to replace Rita de Santis (since Couillard has been trying to phase her out for awhile.) Then when Couillard likely loses the next election, Coderre will try to be the next Liberal leader.

He made a point to specifically say, "I'm quiting Municipal politics." Not just politics.

Also, surprisingly Projet elected their first borough councilor in RDP in Pointe aux Prairies.

So I guess he goes back to his old job as a professional flibbertigibbet

lagatta4

Well, he'll do that until he dies. Hopefully, with less credibility and fewer followers.

I'm thinking he gets the next open Senate seat. As an "independent", of course.

Which is ANOTHER way of saying he gets the next open Senate seat. If Justin has a sense of humor, he'll give him one from P.E.I.

Any chance Coalition Montreal will now merge with Projet? Is sounds like their platforms are similar and CM didn't exactly sweep the boards yesterday.

Pondering

What is Equippe Coderre withou a Coderre? Now they are just "Equippe". They are pretty much all independents now. I wonder how they are going to react, if they will try to undermine Plante or try to get on her good side.

I don't think Coalition Montreal will merge with Projet Montreal. Fact is that the opposition now needs a party to unify behind, I don't think renaming Equipe Coderre and having that as the new opposition will happen because the party has no ideology or identity, it was a Denis Coderre vehicle. I don't know why the remaining councillors and an eventual new leader of the opposition would want to be stuck with Equipe Coderre's massive debt for no reason, when they can start from scratch or just take over another municipal party that doesn't have a massive debt. (ie. Vrai Changement or Coalition Montreal.)

lagatta4

Marvin Rotrand is the only remaining Coalition member elected to council, and he said he would be retiring at the end of this term, so I doubt he'll join anyone; he'll probably remain independent.
